The first widely recognized wireless remote control was invented to operate a small unmanned boat from a distance. Nikola Tesla demonstrated the system in 1898, using transmitted radio signals to steer and control a vessel without wires, cables, or any physical connection between the operator and the boat.
It was not designed for television. TVs did not receive remote controls until decades later. Tesla’s invention was a radio-controlled vehicle system, with possible applications in navigation, automation, and military technology.
Tesla’s 1898 remote-controlled boat
Tesla demonstrated his device at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1898. The machine was a small boat he called the teleautomaton. An operator sent wireless electrical signals from a control box, and mechanisms inside the boat responded by changing its movement.
The demonstration allowed Tesla to control functions such as the boat’s direction and propulsion remotely. To spectators, the vessel appeared to move under its own power. Tesla reportedly had to explain that it was not being controlled by a hidden operator or a mechanical connection.

This is why Tesla is generally credited with developing the first publicly demonstrated wireless remote-control system. The more precise claim matters: remote control existed in wired and mechanical forms before this, but Tesla’s system was an early practical example of radio control.
What was it intended to do?
Its immediate purpose was to control an unmanned moving vessel. More broadly, Tesla’s system was meant to show that machines could receive commands remotely and perform actions without a person physically operating them.
That concept could apply to:
- Boats and other unmanned vessels
- Vehicles and carriages
- Airships or balloons
- Military equipment
- Future automated machines
His U.S. Patent No. 613,809, titled “Method of and Apparatus for Controlling Mechanism of Moving Vessels or Vehicles,” reflects that wider goal. Tesla filed it on July 1, 1898, and the patent was granted on November 8 of the same year. It described controlling moving vessels and vehicles through transmitted waves or impulses.
Was the first remote control invented as a weapon?
Not exactly. Tesla presented a boat as a public technological demonstration, not a completed weapon. However, he understood that the same technology could have military uses. One possibility he discussed was a remotely controlled or radio-guided torpedo.

That makes “it was invented for warfare” an incomplete answer. The system was created to demonstrate wireless control of machines, while military guidance was one important application Tesla saw for it. The boat was the invention’s immediate, documented public form.
How did Tesla’s system work?
The operator used a control device to transmit electrical impulses. A receiver on the boat detected those signals and activated onboard mechanisms. The commands could control movement rather than merely turn the vessel on or off.
In modern terms, it was an early remote-control link: a transmitter sent instructions, a receiver interpreted them, and actuators carried out the requested actions. It was much less flexible than a modern radio controller, but the basic relationship between controller and machine was recognizably similar.
The system did not rely on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, satellites, or a digital computer. It used the wireless signaling technology available at the end of the 19th century. Tesla’s achievement was demonstrating that coded wireless commands could make a machine respond at a distance.

Why people associate the first remote control with televisions
Television remotes are the most familiar type of remote control, so “first remote control” is often mistakenly interpreted as “first TV remote.” That timeline is wrong.
| Technology | Approximate period | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla’s wireless control system | 1898 | Operating an unmanned boat and other vehicles |
| Early wired TV remote controls | 1950s | Changing television functions from a short distance |
| Wireless consumer TV remotes | 1950s onward | Changing channels, volume, and other TV settings |
TV remote controls appeared more than half a century after Tesla’s boat. They were a later consumer application of remote-control principles, not the origin of the technology.
What does “first remote control” actually mean?
The phrase is slightly ambiguous. People used wired control systems and other forms of mechanical remote operation before 1898. There were also competing experiments in early wireless control. Therefore, saying Tesla invented every kind of remote control would be too broad.
The historically defensible version is this: Nikola Tesla developed one of the earliest—and generally the first publicly demonstrated—wireless radio remote-control systems. He used it to operate an unmanned boat and patented a broader method for controlling moving vessels and vehicles.

Who invented the first wireless remote control?
Nikola Tesla is generally credited with developing the first publicly demonstrated wireless radio remote-control system. He demonstrated it in 1898 using a small boat called the teleautomaton.
What did Tesla’s first remote control operate?
It operated an unmanned boat. Wireless signals sent from an operator’s control device made mechanisms inside the boat respond and change its movement.
Was the first remote control made for a television?
No. Television remote controls came much later. Tesla’s 1898 system was designed to control a boat and potentially other vehicles from a distance.

Was Tesla’s remote-controlled boat a weapon?
The public demonstration involved a boat, not a completed weapon. Tesla did recognize possible military uses, including remotely controlled or radio-guided torpedoes.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The first widely recognized wireless remote control was invented to operate an unmanned boat. Nikola Tesla demonstrated the system in 1898 and patented a broader method for controlling vessels and vehicles with transmitted wireless signals. Its possible military use was part of Tesla’s vision, but it was not originally a television remote or solely a weapon.
