Anker Power Bank Wattage and Capacity Explained: What the Numbers Mean

A power bank’s mAh rating describes charge capacity, Wh describes stored energy, and W describes how quickly power can move. They are related, but they are not interchangeable. To estimate how much energy a bank stores, use its rated capacity and the battery’s nominal voltage; to judge charging speed, check the output rating for the specific port and the bank’s total output limit.

What do mAh, Wh and W mean?

Label What it measures What it helps you compare
mAh (milliamp-hours) Electrical charge capacity Capacity ratings when the batteries’ nominal voltages are the same
Wh (watt-hours) Stored energy, accounting for voltage Energy capacity, especially across batteries with different nominal voltages
W (watts) Rate of power transfer Potential charging speed and whether an output can meet a device’s needs

As Anker puts it, “Watts describe the rate at which power moves, while watt-hours describe stored energy.” A high-wattage bank may charge a compatible device faster, but that rating alone does not mean it stores more energy. Likewise, a high Wh rating does not guarantee high output wattage. Anker’s explanation of mAh and Wh distinguishes these measures.

How do you convert a power bank’s mAh rating to Wh?

Use the battery’s nominal voltage—not the USB output voltage printed beside a port:

Wh = (mAh × nominal battery voltage) ÷ 1,000

For the reverse calculation, use mAh = (Wh × 1,000) ÷ nominal battery voltage. Anker’s worked example is 20,000mAh × 3.7V ÷ 1,000 = 74Wh. That is an example using 3.7V, not a universal conversion for every 20,000mAh power bank: the relevant nominal voltage can vary. Check the exact product label or manual if it is not clear. Anker’s guide to power-bank label details covers the information shown on product markings.

Do not substitute a port’s 5V or 9V USB output for the battery’s nominal voltage. Those figures describe output conditions, while the conversion needs the voltage associated with the rated battery capacity.

Why doesn’t a 20,000mAh power bank deliver 20,000mAh to a phone?

The mAh rating refers to charge capacity inside the bank’s battery cells, not the amount delivered at a device’s USB input. The bank converts battery voltage to USB output voltage, and its conversion circuitry uses some energy in the process. The receiving device also has charging losses. As a result, usable output is lower, and the exact amount depends on the bank, output voltage, load and charging conditions.

Anker Support Canada illustrates the effect with a 20,000mAh, 3.7V battery (74Wh): using an assumed 82% conversion efficiency, its example calculates about 12,140mAh at 5V. The 82% is an explanatory assumption in that example, not a guaranteed efficiency for all power banks. Anker Support Canada explains why rated and delivered capacity differ.

Anker UK separately estimates that a 10,000mAh bank may provide roughly 6,000–7,000mAh at 5V, depending on conversion efficiency and load. Treat this as the manufacturer’s general estimate, not a promise for a particular model. The same Anker UK guide discusses that estimate.

These figures cannot tell you exactly how many times a particular phone will recharge. That depends on the phone’s battery energy, how it is being used, the charging protocol and cable, and other conditions.

How should you read wattage on a power bank?

Output wattage tells you the maximum rate a port—or the bank as a whole—can provide under supported conditions. A device can use that power only if the bank, device and cable support a compatible charging mode. Check the output specifications for the port you plan to use, including supported voltage and current where listed, rather than relying only on a large wattage number in the product name.

Also distinguish maximum output from one port from maximum total output. For example, Anker’s Power Bank (10K, 22.5W) user guide lists up to 22.5W from either USB-C or USB-A individually, but up to 15W total output. Its USB-C input is listed at up to 20W. The guide’s figures show why a single-port maximum should not be assumed to apply when multiple devices are connected. See the Anker 10K, 22.5W user guide for its port and input specifications.

What should you check before comparing power banks?

  • Compare Wh for stored energy. mAh alone can mislead when batteries use different nominal voltages.
  • Check the intended port’s output. Confirm its maximum wattage and supported voltage/current, then check that your device and cable can use a compatible charging mode.
  • Check total output. If you will charge multiple devices at once, look for the combined limit, not just each port’s individual maximum.
  • Check input and recharge requirements. Maximum input power is separate from output power, and reaching it may require a suitable charger and cable. For example, Anker says its cited Prime 20K, 220W model needs a 5A cable and a charger rated at 100W or higher to reach its 100W maximum input. Check the specifications for that exact product configuration.
  • Verify the exact model’s label and specifications. Similar product names or capacities do not establish identical cell voltage, port ratings or total output.
