Anker Power Bank Not Charging? Common Causes and Fixes

An Anker power bank that is “not charging” has one of two different problems: it may not be taking power from a wall charger, or it may be charged but failing to power your phone or another device. Start by identifying which symptom you have. Then test one variable at a time with a compatible outlet, charger, cable, port and device. Port layouts, charger requirements, low-current modes and reset procedures differ by model, so there is no safe universal wattage or button sequence.

First, identify which charging path has failed

A power bank has two separate paths:

  • Input (recharge): power flows from a wall charger through a cable into the bank.
  • Output (device charging): power flows from the bank through a cable to your phone, earbuds, watch or other accessory.

Use the symptom that matches what you see before changing anything. If the bank’s indicators do not respond when connected to a wall charger, begin with the input branch. If the bank shows charge but the connected device remains at the same battery level, use the output branch. If both behaviors occur, troubleshoot input first, because an empty bank cannot provide useful output.

What you observe Likely path Start here
No indicator or progress when the bank is connected to a wall charger Input/recharge path Test another outlet, a known-working compatible cable and another compatible wall charger.
The bank shows charge, but a connected phone or accessory does not charge Output path Test a known-working cable, a second device and an output-capable port on your exact model.
Only a very small device, such as earbuds or a watch, fails to charge Low-current output behavior Check whether your model has a dedicated trickle- or low-current mode.
The bank and device both appear unresponsive Input may be incomplete, or the bank may need a documented reset Confirm the recharge path first, then consult the exact model’s reset instructions.

Find the model number printed on the bank, its packaging or its label before interpreting ports or LEDs. A procedure that is correct for one Anker model can be wrong for another. Record whether the problem began suddenly or after a cable, charger or device was changed, but do not assume the most recently changed item is automatically defective.

Before testing: confirm the model and ports

Read the port labels and manual

Do not assume every USB-C socket is an output. Some banks use USB-C for input only, some use it for both directions, and others assign different jobs to each socket. The charger’s acceptable input range is also model-specific; use the rating printed on the bank or in its manual rather than choosing a universal wattage.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Anker’s 313 Power Bank (model A1229) is a concrete example of why this matters: its USB-A port charges connected devices, while its Micro-USB and USB-C ports are used to recharge the power bank. Plugging a phone into one of those input-only ports will not produce output on that model.

Record the starting condition

  • Note how many LEDs are lit, if any, before you begin.
  • Write down the model number and the exact port and cable you used.
  • Disconnect other devices so that only one charging path is being tested.
  • Note whether the wall charger itself shows a power indicator and whether it charges another device.

LED colors and blink patterns are not identical across the range. Use the model’s documentation to interpret them instead of treating a particular pattern as universal. Avoid repeatedly pressing buttons or swapping ports without recording what changed; a simple test log makes it easier to see whether a substitution had an effect.

If the Anker power bank will not recharge itself

Use this branch when the bank is connected to a wall charger but does not appear to gain charge. Anker’s general charging guidance recommends substituting the outlet, cable and charger. Make the substitutions separately so each test isolates one possible fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Try another wall outlet

  1. Unplug the wall charger from the current socket.
  2. Connect it to a different, known-working outlet.
  3. Use the same cable and the correct input port on the bank.

If charging begins, the original outlet, power strip or its switch is the likely cause. If nothing changes, continue without assuming the bank itself has failed. When using a power strip, bypass it during the test so its switch or protection feature is not another unknown.

2. Replace the cable with a known-working compatible cable

Use a cable that is known to charge another appropriate device and that matches the bank’s input connector. Check both ends for bent, loose or obstructed connectors. A cable can fail internally while looking normal, so a substitution is more useful than repeatedly reconnecting the same lead.

Keep the test model-aware: a USB-C cable is not proof that every USB-C port on the bank accepts input, and a connector that fits physically may still be unsuitable for the bank’s specified charging arrangement. Test the replacement cable with the same outlet and charger first; changing several parts together makes the result ambiguous.

3. Try another compatible wall charger

Use a second charger whose output is supported by the bank’s label or manual. Anker’s troubleshooting pages recommend trying another charger or plug for recharge failures. This is a diagnostic swap, not a guarantee that a higher-power adapter will repair the bank. Do not infer a universal wattage from another Anker model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the second charger works, the first adapter is the likely fault. If neither works, keep the known-working cable and the alternate outlet in place for the next checks. A charger that can power a phone is useful evidence, but it still must be compatible with the power bank’s specified input arrangement.

4. Check the correct input port and connection

Confirm that the cable is in an input-capable socket for your model, then seat both connectors fully without forcing them. If the bank has separate input and output sockets, an output-only port will not recharge it. Remove dust or debris only with a safe, non-metal method; do not insert tools into the port.

Look for a loose fit that changes when the plug is moved, but do not wiggle the connector aggressively. If the manual identifies a particular port for recharge, use that port even when another socket accepts the same physical connector.

5. Allow the bank time to respond, then check the indicators

After changing the outlet, cable or charger, leave the connection undisturbed long enough for the bank’s normal indicator behavior. Compare the LEDs with the model manual. A dark display by itself does not establish a particular fault, because indicator behavior varies by product.

Press the status button only as the manual describes. Some products show status briefly, while others show a charging animation or a different pattern when no device is connected. The useful comparison is whether the behavior changes with a known-good charging setup, not whether one particular LED color appears on every Anker bank.

6. Consider a reset only when the model documents one

Anker support describes a reset for certain power banks by connecting the two ends of a cable to the bank’s input and output ports for about 3–5 seconds. This is not a universal Anker instruction. Perform it only if the exact model’s support page or manual specifies that arrangement and timing. Never force a cable into a socket, bridge contacts or improvise a connection when the port layout is different.

The Anker 737 Power Bank has its own special-issues guidance, including a model-specific reset instruction. Follow that product’s documented sequence rather than applying the generic 3–5-second procedure automatically. If your model has no documented reset, skip this step rather than inventing one.

What each recharge substitution tells you

  • New outlet works: investigate the original socket, strip or switch.
  • New cable works: the original cable is suspect; keep the working cable for further tests.
  • New charger works: the first adapter or plug is suspect.
  • None works: verify the model’s input port and requirements once more, then escalate rather than repeatedly cycling through the same accessories.

These results narrow the fault; they do not prove that the power bank is healthy or unsafe. A successful charge with one accessory should be repeated once with the same setup before you discard the original part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the recharge branch points to support

If a different suitable outlet, known-working compatible cable and compatible charger produce the same result, stop repeating substitutions and contact Anker support. Provide the model number and list each outlet, cable, charger and input port you tested. Anker’s guidance for the 535 Power Bank and other models directs users to support when these basic checks do not resolve a no-charge condition.

If the power bank will not charge your phone or accessory

Use this branch when the bank itself appears charged but a connected device receives no power. The most common errors are a bad cable, a depleted bank, an input-only port being used as output, or a low-current device needing a special mode.

1. Check that the bank has usable charge

Press the bank’s status button according to its manual and note the indicator. If the bank is empty or nearly empty, recharge it through the correct input port before judging its output. Do not treat a single LED pattern as universal; consult the model documentation for what the display means.

Disconnect the bank from the wall charger while testing output unless the manual specifically describes pass-through behavior. Keep only the test device connected so another accessory cannot change the bank’s output behavior or consume the remaining charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Substitute a known-working device cable

Use a cable that reliably charges the same type of device from another power source. Confirm that both connectors match the phone or accessory and the selected bank port. If the replacement cable works, retire the original cable or reserve it for separate testing rather than blaming the bank.

Adapters and extension pieces add another connection to the chain. Remove them for the first test and connect the known-working cable directly to the bank and device whenever the connectors permit.

3. Test a second device

Connect another compatible phone or accessory with the known-working cable. A second device separates a problem in the first device’s port, settings or battery from a problem in the bank’s output circuit. Test one device at a time and remove cases or adapters that prevent a firm connection.

If the second device charges, the bank and output port are providing power, so focus on the original device, its cable and its connector. If neither device charges, keep the same known-working cable and move to port verification rather than changing every variable at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify that the selected port provides output

Read the labels and model manual before changing ports. The 313 Power Bank A1229 illustrates the distinction: USB-A is the device-charging output, while USB-C and Micro-USB are input-only. On a different model, USB-C may be bidirectional or assigned another role, so copy the arrangement for your own model instead of the A1229’s.

5. Use low-current or trickle mode only when your model supports it

Earbuds, small speakers, watches and other low-powered devices can draw so little current that a bank’s ordinary output mode switches off. Anker’s 313 instructions specify a trickle-charging mode for such devices: press the button twice until the first LED turns green, then connect the low-current device. That button sequence and indicator apply to that model’s documented behavior only. Do not apply it to another bank unless its manual gives the same instruction.

Use this mode as a targeted test for a small accessory, not as a general cure for a phone that will not charge. If the mode is not listed for your model, do not guess at a button combination or rely on another model’s LED color.

6. Reconnect in a controlled order

  1. Disconnect the device and cable from the bank.
  2. Wake the bank with its status button if the manual requires this.
  3. Connect the known-working cable to the confirmed output port.
  4. Connect the second test device and observe its charging indication.

If the second device charges but the original does not, investigate the original device, its cable or its connector. If neither device charges after the port and cable checks, continue to the model-specific reset step or support escalation.

7. Apply a documented reset, if available

Some Anker support pages describe connecting both ends of a cable to specified input and output ports for 3–5 seconds. Because port assignments differ, use that method only when your exact model’s documentation calls for it. The 737 has separate special-issues instructions. Never force a connector or create a cable arrangement that the manual does not describe.

How to interpret output test results

Result Most useful next conclusion
Original device fails, second device charges Investigate the original device, its port or its cable.
Neither device charges from one port, but another documented output port works The first port or its role may be the issue; use the working port and consult support if needed.
Neither device charges from any documented output port with a known-working cable Follow the exact model’s reset guidance, then contact Anker if it still fails.
Only earbuds, a watch or another low-current accessory fails Check for the model’s documented trickle- or low-current mode.

When the output branch points to support

Contact Anker support if the bank still fails with a known-working cable and a second compatible device, or if the documented reset changes nothing. Include the model number, the output port used, the bank’s indicator state and the exact devices, cables and chargers tested. Anker’s 313 troubleshooting guidance directs users to support after those checks fail.

Choosing replacement accessories for diagnosis

A replacement accessory is useful only when it matches the exact model and is tested for the right purpose. Treat the first replacement as a diagnostic swap; buy a permanent replacement only after the swap identifies the original accessory as the fault.

Accessory Compatibility check How to use it
USB charging cable Connector type and input/output direction must match the bank and the device; verify the model manual. Use a known-working cable first to isolate the original cable. Keep it as a permanent replacement only if the test succeeds.
USB wall charger Output must be supported by the bank’s label or manual; there is no universal Anker wattage. Use another compatible charger to isolate the adapter. A different charger is not a guaranteed repair.
Outlet or power strip Use a socket known to power another device. Change the outlet before changing several other variables at once.

Do not select an accessory solely because its connector fits. Electrical support, port direction and the model’s documented limits matter as much as the plug shape. A USB-C cable or charger can be a sensible diagnostic purchase when your existing accessory is suspect, but neither is a guaranteed fix for a failed bank.

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder

  • Confusing input and output: a port that recharges the bank may not charge a phone.
  • Changing everything at once: replacing the outlet, cable and charger simultaneously hides which part was faulty. Change one item, then retest.
  • Assuming USB-C always works both ways: the A1229 313 example has USB-C for input, not device output.
  • Using a low-current mode on the wrong model: the 313’s double-press and green-first-LED sequence is not a range-wide shortcut.
  • Applying a generic reset blindly: the 3–5-second two-port connection is documented only for certain products.
  • Judging from one device: test a second device before concluding that the bank’s output is defective.
  • Ignoring the model number: manuals and support pages are organized around the exact product, not just the Anker name.
  • Testing through unnecessary adapters: an extra connector can create a poor fit or another failed link in the chain.
  • Continuing after a clear physical problem: do not open the bank or attempt an internal-cell repair; seek handling instructions from Anker or the applicable service channel.

What to send Anker support

Prepare a concise test record so support can reproduce the fault:

  • Exact model number, such as the code printed on the bank.
  • Whether the failure is recharge input, device output or both.
  • Which port was used and how the manual identifies that port.
  • Outlet, wall charger and cable substitutions already tried.
  • Results with a second device or charger.
  • LED behavior before and after each test.
  • Whether the model’s documented reset was attempted and what happened.
  • Whether the problem changes when only one device is connected.

Support can act more quickly when you distinguish “the bank will not recharge” from “the bank will not charge my phone” and provide the exact accessories used. If a replacement accessory solved the issue, identify it by connector and role rather than simply saying that a different cable worked.

If the power bank is physically damaged, do not open it or attempt an internal-cell repair. Stop troubleshooting and ask Anker support or the applicable service channel for handling instructions.

Bottom line

Separate a recharge failure from an output failure, then isolate the path with one known-good substitution at a time. Verify the exact model’s port roles and charging requirements, use low-current mode or a reset only when that model documents it, and escalate with your model number and test results when compatible accessories and another outlet do not solve the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my Anker power bank show charge but not charge my phone?

Use a known-working device cable, test a second device and confirm that the selected port provides output on your exact model. Some USB-C and Micro-USB ports are input-only; the 313 A1229, for example, uses USB-A for output.

Can I use any USB-C port to charge an Anker power bank?

No. Port roles vary. Some USB-C ports are input-only, while others may be bidirectional. Read the labels and manual for your model before connecting the charger.

How do I charge earbuds or a watch from an Anker power bank?

Small devices may need a documented trickle- or low-current mode. On the 313 A1229, Anker specifies pressing the button twice until the first LED turns green. Do not use that sequence on another model unless its documentation gives the same instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a universal Anker power-bank reset?

No. Some models document connecting both ends of a cable to specified input and output ports for about 3–5 seconds, while others have different instructions. Check the exact model’s manual or support page and never force a connector.

Should I buy a new cable or wall charger first?

Use a known-working compatible cable or charger as a diagnostic swap, matching the connector, port role and input requirements shown for your model. A replacement accessory can identify the faulty part but is not a guaranteed repair for the bank.

What information does Anker support need?

Give the exact model number, whether input or output fails, the ports used, LED behavior, the outlet, charger and cable substitutions attempted, the result with a second device, and whether the documented reset was tried.

What if the power bank is physically damaged?

Do not open it, replace internal cells or improvise a repair. Stop troubleshooting and ask Anker support or the applicable service channel for handling instructions.
