Anime Zero: Best Skills to Unlock First for Faster Progress (Update 1 Guide)

Spend your first Skill Token on the Attack or damage path for the weapon you use most. Independent Anime Zero beginner guides agree that damage is the safest opening investment because shorter fights make early rooms and chapters more reliable. This is community guidance rather than an official developer build recommendation, and the live skill tree can change.

After that first purchase, choose according to the problem ending your runs: add critical chance when you already survive comfortably, defense when bosses or repeated mistakes kill you, and movement speed when positioning, dodging, or gathering enemies is slowing clear times. Keep early tokens concentrated on one active weapon instead of spreading them across every tree.

The short priority order

  1. Attack/damage: first choice for a new run and the weapon you use most.
  2. Critical chance: next offensive option after ordinary damage is sufficient and survivability is no longer the limiting issue.
  3. Defense: take it when boss hits, mistakes, or attrition are ending otherwise winnable runs.
  4. Movement speed: take it when positioning, dodging, or bringing enemies together is costing more time than damage output.

This order is a practical troubleshooting route, not a mathematically proven universal build. The recommendations come from independent community guides checked around Anime Zero’s October 2026 Update 1, not from a developer-published skill-tree specification.

Why Attack is usually the best first unlock

Early progress is commonly limited by how long ordinary enemies remain alive. More damage reduces the number of attacks required for each target, which lowers the time spent exposed to incoming hits and lets you reach later rooms with fewer mistakes. One beginner guide specifically recommends staying on the Attack path until early chapters stop blocking progress; another describes damage as the most direct early upgrade because it shortens fights.

The first Attack upgrade is reported as costing one Skill Token. A guide checked October 9, 2026 also reports a first Attack-node value of +15% damage. Treat that percentage as a community-reported in-game value, not a permanent specification: the current node description in your client is the authority if it differs.

When not to force more damage

Attack should not remain the answer after your actual bottleneck changes. If normal enemies already die quickly but a boss repeatedly defeats you, another damage node may leave the underlying problem untouched. Likewise, if you spend most of a room running around attacks or failing to group targets, movement speed can improve practical clear time more than a small offensive increase.

Match the next skill to your run’s bottleneck

Upgrade path Choose it when What it fixes Important caveat
Attack/damage Enemies take too long to defeat or early chapters are stopping progress. Low damage output and long exposure during routine fights. Specific node effects and values must be checked in the live tree.
Critical chance Your damage is adequate and you are surviving comfortably. It adds offensive upside after basic consistency is already in place. It is a weaker rescue tool when incoming damage, rather than kill speed, ends the run.
Defense Boss attacks or repeated mistakes end runs before you can finish them. Reliability and tolerance for unavoidable or misplayed hits. It does not directly solve slow enemy kills.
Movement speed Dodging, repositioning, or gathering enemies is slowing rooms. Positioning time and the ability to avoid attacks or keep targets together. It is situational, not a universal first pick.

Attack and damage: your opening path

Buy the first node for your main weapon

Identify the weapon you actually expect to use for the next several rooms, then put the first token into that weapon’s Attack or damage branch. Do not choose a tree merely because its icon looks attractive; the value comes from improving the tool doing most of your fighting.

Continue only while damage is the problem

After the first purchase, watch two signals: how long routine enemies survive and whether your health is comfortable when they do. If ordinary targets still take too many attacks and you are not dying to incoming damage, another damage investment remains coherent. Once enemies fall promptly, reassess instead of buying damage automatically.

Critical chance: an offensive follow-up, not an emergency button

Critical chance is the recommended next offensive direction when your character already survives comfortably. Its value depends on having enough baseline damage and enough time in a run for additional offensive events to matter. If a boss can end the run before your improved damage has an opportunity to pay off, defense is the more direct correction.

A simple test before choosing critical chance

  • Routine enemies are dying without forcing desperate positioning.
  • You usually reach the point where a run fails because of a boss or a major mistake, not because every room is an extended slog.
  • Your health and defensive margin are adequate for the content you are currently attempting.

If those conditions are not true, stay with the damage path or address survival first. Critical chance should increase an already stable run, not substitute for a missing foundation.

Defense: buy reliability when survival is the wall

Defense is the practical answer when boss damage or repeated errors are ending otherwise promising attempts. A defensive node can give you more room to learn attack patterns, recover from a positioning error, or finish a fight that your current damage already handles in a reasonable time.

Signs that defense is now worth a token

  • You consistently reach a boss but die to one or two hits.
  • A small mistake in a crowded room ends the attempt even though enemies are not especially slow to defeat.
  • You lose runs through accumulated damage before reaching the next upgrade opportunity.

Defense has an explicit trade-off: it improves reliability but does not directly increase kill speed. If the failure is “the enemy survives too long,” defense can make a slow run safer without making it faster. Use the path to solve a demonstrated survivability problem.

Movement speed: a solution for positioning problems

Movement speed is useful when the character’s location, rather than raw damage, controls the pace of a room. Faster movement can help you dodge, reach targets, gather enemies into a manageable group, or spend less time crossing empty space. The guides treat it as a situational choice rather than a default opener.

Choose movement when the room itself is wasting time

  • You spend substantial time chasing targets that separate or kite away.
  • Dodging is difficult because you cannot leave danger zones quickly enough.
  • You are repeatedly forced to abandon attacks while repositioning.
  • Enemies die quickly once you are in range, but getting into effective range is the slow part.

If enemies remain alive because your weapon lacks damage, movement speed changes the symptom rather than the cause. Check whether faster positioning would actually reduce room time before moving away from Attack.

How to spend the first tokens step by step

  1. Open the live skill tree. Read the current node name, effect, cost, and any requirement shown in your game client. Community guides differ in how precisely they document these details.
  2. Select your main weapon. Base the choice on the weapon you are using most often in the current run, not on a weapon you might switch to later.
  3. Purchase the available Attack or damage node. The beginner route reports one token for the first upgrade. Confirm that price in your version before spending.
  4. Play enough rooms to identify the real failure point. Note whether enemies are too durable, your health is disappearing, or movement is preventing efficient attacks.
  5. Choose the next branch from that symptom. Continue damage for slow kills, choose critical chance when survival is already comfortable, choose defense for repeated deaths, or choose movement speed for positioning delays.
  6. Review after a major weapon or trait change. If your main weapon changes, reassess which tree deserves the next token instead of continuing an old plan automatically.

Keep early investment concentrated on one weapon

Skill Tokens are limited early resources. Splitting them across several weapon trees can leave every weapon partly upgraded without giving the weapon in your hands a meaningful breakpoint. The community guides therefore advise concentrating investment on the currently used weapon.

When a reset or change of direction makes sense

Review the tree after a major weapon change, a trait change that alters how you fight, or a new chapter that exposes a different bottleneck. A switch from close-range play to a weapon that relies on distance can change the value of movement and defense, while a weapon that already clears ordinary enemies quickly may make critical chance more attractive.

Reported costs and what is still uncertain

Detail What the guides report How to use it
First upgrade cost One Skill Token for the first upgrade on each path in the beginner route checked October 9, 2026. Use one token as the reported starting point, then verify the live price before confirming.
Later upgrade costs Later upgrades cost more, according to that same route. Do not assume every node has a one-token price.
First Attack value +15% damage is reported by the Anime Zero beginner guide checked October 9, 2026. Read the current in-game description because this is a community game-value claim.
Exact node names and unlock levels Not established consistently; another guide checked October 4, 2026 explicitly says its source material does not establish them. Quote the labels and requirements shown in your current client rather than relying on an old list.

Anime Zero is actively developed. Update 1 is dated October 4, 2026, and one beginner route says it was verified October 9, 2026. Those dates make the recommendations useful for the current period, but they do not guarantee that a later hotfix or balance change will preserve a cost, percentage, node name, or unlock level.

Common mistakes that slow progress

Spreading tokens across every weapon

This creates several partially improved trees and can leave the weapon carrying your run underpowered. Concentrate early spending until you have a concrete reason to support another weapon.

Buying critical chance while dying to bosses

More offense is not a solution to a run that ends from incoming damage. If ordinary enemies are already manageable, use defense to address the failure that is actually ending attempts.

Buying defense when every room is a damage check

Survivability cannot compensate indefinitely for enemies taking too long to defeat. If you are healthy but clearing slowly, return to Attack or consider critical chance only after basic damage is adequate.

Choosing movement speed without a positioning problem

Movement is valuable when travel, dodging, or grouping consumes time. If you are already reaching targets easily and they simply take too many hits, the damage path is more directly related to the problem.

Memorizing an old tree

Exact values can change with updates. Treat community numbers as dated reports and inspect the current UI before confirming a purchase.

Practical examples

Example: slow early rooms, healthy character

Enemies survive long enough to create congestion, but you rarely take meaningful damage. Buy Attack for the main weapon and continue on that path while the same pattern persists. Critical chance becomes a reasonable later offensive direction once routine fights are consistently under control.

Example: ordinary enemies are fine, boss ends every attempt

Your damage is sufficient for rooms, but a boss kills you after one or two mistakes. Stop treating damage as the automatic answer and use defense to widen the margin for surviving the encounter. Movement may be preferable only if the deaths are specifically caused by being unable to leave danger zones.

Example: kills are quick, but targets are always out of position

If enemies die immediately once reached, yet chasing and dodging dominate the clock, movement speed addresses the limiting step. Keep the weapon focus intact and change paths only because positioning, not damage, is now controlling progress.

How to verify a recommendation before spending

  1. Check the update or version shown by your game client.
  2. Open the weapon’s skill tree and read the node’s exact current effect.
  3. Confirm the token balance after accounting for any later node cost.
  4. Check whether the node requires a level, previous node, weapon, or trait condition.
  5. Spend only after matching the node to the failure pattern you observed.

This verification matters because the available guides are community-maintained and differ in specificity. Their broad priority—damage for early progress, then a conditional defensive, critical, or movement response—is more durable than any unverified list of exact labels or prices.
