Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor repeatable website screenshots, define the page state you want, wait for a meaningful readiness condition, control animation deliberately, and keep the browser environment consistent. A fixed sleep alone cannot guarantee that every page has finished loading or reached the right state.
Why screenshots change between runs
A screenshot records a page at a particular moment. If an animation is in progress, data is still arriving, or a lazy-loaded region has not rendered, two captures can differ even when the page code has not changed. Consistency therefore depends on both timing and the state being captured.
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion captures until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last capture with the expected image. That is a useful stability check, but it does not prove the page has reached the business state you intended: an application may still show the wrong data or an incomplete state consistently.
How to stop animations in Playwright screenshots
Use the screenshot assertion for visual tests
In Playwright Test, the assertion’s documented default is to disable animations. Make the choice explicit so the test’s intent is clear:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('captures a stable page', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page.locator('h1')).toHaveText('Example Domain');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ animations: 'disabled' });
});
The assertion waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match and uses the last capture for comparison. The locator check is an example of an application-specific readiness condition; replace it with a condition that actually identifies the state your test needs.
Understand what disabling animations does
The animations: 'disabled' option applies to CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations. Finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion and fire transitionend; infinite animations are canceled to their initial state for the screenshot and resume afterward. This can affect page behavior, so it is not merely a cosmetic pause.
Set the option on plain screenshots too
page.screenshot() allows animations by default, unlike the screenshot assertion’s documented disabled default. Do not assume the two APIs behave alike. Set the option explicitly when capture-time animation handling matters:

The page screenshot API also supports applying a stylesheet during capture, which can hide or normalize dynamic elements.

Define the target page state first
Before capturing, specify the route, viewport, data state, scroll position, open menus, consent state, and any user action needed. This prevents a stable screenshot of the wrong screen from passing as a good result.
Wait for observable conditions, not an arbitrary sleep
Prefer a condition tied to the page, such as a specific locator becoming visible or expected text appearing. There is no universal delay that works for every site: application data, lazy-loaded content, and custom animation logic vary. Playwright notes that most actions auto-wait and that an explicit waitForLoadState() is often unnecessary; an application-specific readiness check may still be needed.

If the animation itself is what you are testing or documenting, leave it enabled and synchronize on the intended point in that animation. Disabling motion would remove the behavior under test.
Handle volatile regions carefully
Playwright screenshot assertions support masks, and screenshot stylesheets can hide or normalize changing elements. Use those controls only for regions that are genuinely irrelevant to the comparison. A hidden or masked region is no longer meaningfully reviewed for visual changes, so do not suppress content that matters.
Keep the capture environment consistent
Even a stable page can render differently across machines. Playwright identifies the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as possible sources of rendering variation. Keep the browser engine and version, operating system, viewport, device scale, fonts, and headed or headless mode aligned with the environment used to generate the baseline. As Playwright puts it, “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” See its visual comparisons guide.

Inspect motion and test reduced-motion behavior
Use DevTools to investigate animation
Chrome DevTools’ Animations panel can inspect supported CSS animations, transitions, Web Animations, and View Transitions. The documentation notes that requestAnimationFrame-driven animations are not yet supported in that panel, so custom script-driven motion may require separate inspection. See Animations: Inspect and modify CSS animation effects.
Keep reduced-motion emulation distinct
Chrome DevTools can emulate the prefers-reduced-motion media feature, allowing you to inspect the page as a user requesting reduced motion would see it. This tests the page’s response to a user preference. It is not the same as Playwright’s screenshot-time animation override, which directly controls capture behavior. Use reduced-motion emulation when checking accessibility behavior; use screenshot animation controls when you need deterministic capture. See the Chrome DevTools accessibility reference.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo takes a website screenshot with one GET request. Its API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture by default; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients.
For a direct call, replace the example URL and put your API key in place of YOUR_API_KEY. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

Troubleshooting inconsistent screenshots
The screenshot changes on every run
- Likely cause: Motion or asynchronous page content is still changing. Fix: Use an observable readiness condition, then use
toHaveScreenshot()for stability; disable animations if motion is not part of the intended result. - Likely cause: A volatile widget changes independently. Fix: Stabilize it, or mask/hide it only if its pixels are out of scope for the test.
- Likely cause: Captures run under different rendering conditions. Fix: Align the baseline and test browser, operating system, viewport, scale, fonts, and headless mode.
The page is stable but the screenshot is still wrong
Matching consecutive captures only establishes visual stability, not correctness of route, data, consent state, scroll position, or required interaction. Add checks for the particular state that matters before the screenshot assertion.
Disabling animations changes page behavior
That option affects multiple animation mechanisms, fast-forwards finite effects, and temporarily cancels infinite ones. If the animation is under test, leave it enabled and wait for the intended animation state instead. If you are checking the site’s accessibility response to reduced motion, emulate that preference separately.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I wait before taking a screenshot?
There is no universally reliable number of seconds. Wait for a page-specific condition that signals the target state rather than choosing a fixed delay.
Does Playwright wait for animations automatically?
toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match, and its documented animation default is disabled. Plain page.screenshot() allows animations by default, so specify behavior intentionally.
