Nintendo provides a separate island-backup feature for the game, and that feature requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. To move an island to another console, use Nintendo’s Island Transfer Tool or a full system-transfer process. These are moves, not ordinary cloud-save downloads, and an Island Transfer Tool move deletes the island from the source console.
The short answer
There are three different Nintendo processes that are easy to confuse:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Island backup: Animal Crossing’s dedicated protection feature. It requires Nintendo Switch Online and is separate from ordinary Save Data Cloud.
- Island Transfer Tool: A move from one Switch console to another. Both consoles participate, and the source island is deleted when the transfer finishes.
- System transfer: Nintendo’s broader console-migration process. Nintendo says it carries Animal Crossing: New Horizons island data to Switch 2 even though the game does not support ordinary Save Data Cloud.
If you are replacing a console, decide first whether you need a safety backup or a permanent move. A backup protects the island on its current console; a transfer relocates it.

Why Animal Crossing is different from a normal cloud-save game
Nintendo’s Switch 2 documentation lists Animal Crossing: New Horizons among games that do not support the standard Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud service. That means you should not expect the usual pattern of opening the game on a second console and downloading a user save from the Save Data Cloud menu.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
- Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
- Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
Instead, Nintendo documents an island-backup feature specifically for Animal Crossing. The feature is tied to the island rather than behaving like a conventional per-user save download, and Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use it. Keep the terms separate when troubleshooting: “cloud save” may describe the general Nintendo service, but “island backup” is the relevant Animal Crossing protection feature.
The distinction also explains why a Switch 2 migration can work without ordinary cloud-save support. A system transfer moves the console’s data directly; it does not depend on Animal Crossing being listed as a Save Data Cloud title.
Compare the available methods
| Method | Purpose | Nintendo Switch Online | Effect on the source console | Important follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Island backup | Protect the Animal Crossing island with the game’s dedicated backup feature | Required | The island remains on the console; this is protection, not a move | Use the game’s island-backup setting and keep the membership active for the feature |
| Island Transfer Tool | Move one complete island from one Switch to another | Requirement is not stated in Nintendo’s transfer instructions | The island save is deleted from the source after the transfer completes | Re-enable island backup on the target; some residents may need account relinking |
| System transfer | Migrate console data, including an Animal Crossing island, to another system such as Switch 2 | Ordinary Save Data Cloud support is not required; a separate membership requirement is not stated in the system-transfer description | Follow the source and target instructions shown by Nintendo’s system-transfer process | Relink resident data if the transfer leaves it unlinked, then re-enable island backup |
How to use island backup
Before you start
- Sign in with a Nintendo Account that has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Use Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ own island-backup setting rather than the Switch system’s ordinary Save Data Cloud controls.
- Keep the console connected as directed by Nintendo’s in-game and support instructions while the backup setting is enabled.
Nintendo’s documentation establishes the membership requirement and the separate nature of the feature, but it does not publish a reliability percentage, guaranteed recovery time, or maximum number of stored snapshots. Do not treat an unverified number as a promise about how many backups exist or how quickly a restoration will complete.

What island backup is—and is not
Island backup is the appropriate option when you want protection against a lost, damaged, or unusable console while keeping the island associated with its current system. It is not a way to create a second playable copy on another Switch. If your goal is to play the same island on a replacement console, use the transfer process instead.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
A microSD card is not a substitute for this feature. The Nintendo workflows documented for Animal Crossing operate on console save data and Nintendo’s backup or transfer tools; copying game files to removable storage does not create an island backup.
Move an island with the Island Transfer Tool
What you need
- The original console containing the island (the Source system).
- The destination console (the Target system).
- Nintendo’s Island Transfer Tool, used on the consoles as directed by Nintendo.
- Enough time to complete the move without powering off either console.
Step-by-step process
- Prepare both consoles and open the Island Transfer Tool.
- On the console that currently holds the island, choose Source.
- On the receiving console, choose Target.
- Follow the tool’s prompts until it confirms that the transfer has completed.
- On the target console, open Animal Crossing and verify that the island and its residents appear.
- Open the game’s island-backup setting on the target and enable backup again.
Important: Nintendo says, “The island will no longer be available to visit on the source system after transferring.” Treat this operation as a move, not a duplicate. Do not start it expecting to keep a playable copy on both consoles.
Resident accounts after a move
Some local-transfer paths can leave resident data unlinked to user accounts. If Animal Crossing asks for a resident to be linked, complete Nintendo’s relinking procedure before trying to continue with that resident’s account. The island itself may have arrived correctly even when an individual resident still needs this account step.
Move from a Switch to Switch 2
Nintendo says a system transfer carries Animal Crossing: New Horizons island data to Switch 2 along with the other data included in the transfer, even though the game does not support ordinary Save Data Cloud. This is why a direct system migration can succeed where a cloud-download expectation would be wrong.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Migration checklist
- Keep the original Switch and the Switch 2 available for Nintendo’s system-transfer process.
- Start the system transfer and follow the on-screen Source and Target instructions.
- Allow the transfer to finish before launching the game on the new console.
- Start Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch 2 and check that the island and residents are present.
- If a resident is shown without a linked user account, use Nintendo’s first-launch relinking procedure.
- Re-enable island backup on Switch 2; the backup setting itself does not transfer automatically.
The system-transfer route is broader than an island-only move because it handles the console migration as a whole. Choose it when you are moving to Switch 2 and want the rest of the eligible console data handled in the same operation. Choose the Island Transfer Tool when the specific task is relocating the island between two consoles using Nintendo’s dedicated island workflow.
What to do after any migration
Confirm the island before changing the old console
Visit the target console’s island, check the expected residents, and confirm that the correct user accounts can enter the game. Do this before resetting, selling, or handing back the source console.
Turn island backup on again
Nintendo explicitly states that island-backup settings are not transferred to the target system. After a successful move, open Animal Crossing’s backup setting on the new console and enable it again. A completed transfer does not mean the new console has inherited the old console’s backup preference.
Handle an unlinked resident
If the island loads but a resident cannot continue, look for Nintendo’s account-linking prompt or first-launch relinking steps. Relinking is a user-account step; it does not mean that ordinary Save Data Cloud support has been added to the game.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Looking in the wrong menu
Searching only under the Switch’s Save Data Cloud screen will not make Animal Crossing behave like a supported cloud-save title. Use the game’s island-backup feature for backup and Nintendo’s transfer tools for migration.
Assuming a transfer makes a copy
The Island Transfer Tool removes the island save from the source when the move completes. Verify the target first, and never begin the process if you require two independent playable islands from the same save.
Forgetting the post-transfer setting
Backup preferences do not follow the island automatically. Re-enable island backup on the destination as a separate final step.

Removable storage can hold game-related files, but Nintendo’s documented Animal Crossing protection and migration workflows use console save data and Nintendo’s own tools. It is not documented as an island-backup method.

Starting without both consoles for an island move
The Island Transfer Tool requires the Source and Target systems together. If the original console is unavailable, an island-transfer operation cannot be treated as a normal cloud download; use the island-backup recovery path that Nintendo provides for eligible situations.
Assuming every transfer has identical resident behavior
Nintendo notes that some local system-transfer paths can require resident-to-user relinking. Have the relevant Nintendo Account information ready, and complete the relinking prompt before diagnosing the island itself as missing.
Which method should you choose?
- You are protecting your current console: enable Animal Crossing’s island backup and maintain the required Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- You are moving the island to another Switch: use the Island Transfer Tool with both consoles, and remember that the source island is deleted after completion.
- You are migrating to Switch 2: use Nintendo’s system-transfer workflow, then check residents and enable island backup again on the new console.
- You only have a microSD card or the ordinary Save Data Cloud menu: neither is the documented substitute for Animal Crossing’s island-backup feature.
The practical rule is simple: island backup is for protection, while Island Transfer Tool and system transfer are for relocation. Keeping those workflows separate prevents the two most costly mistakes—expecting a normal cloud download and assuming a transfer leaves the original island intact.
