If you are buying the game for a Nintendo Switch 2, choose the Switch 2 Edition when its enhanced resolution, mouse controls and microphone megaphone matter to you. If you already own the Switch version and are moving to Switch 2, compare Nintendo’s upgrade pack before buying another full copy.
Most accessories are optional. Animal Crossing amiibo cards and figures are worthwhile only for their supported scanning and invitation features. A compatible USB camera is needed for Switch 2 video features such as CameraPlay, but not for ordinary island play. Cases, grips and collectibles are comfort, protection or hobby purchases rather than required hardware.

The two game editions at a glance
Nintendo currently has two relevant versions of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The original Switch release launched on March 20, 2020. It remains the standard edition for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED owners. Nintendo lists the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a January 15, 2026 release date.
| Edition | Hardware | What it includes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Nintendo Switch | Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED; it also runs on Switch 2 as the Switch version | The original game experience | Anyone who owns an original Switch-family console, or a Switch 2 owner who does not need the new features |
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Nintendo Switch 2 | Enhanced resolution, mouse-control support for decorating and Custom Designs, a microphone-based megaphone and other Switch 2 enhancements | A new Switch 2 buyer who wants the enhanced presentation and controls |
| Upgrade pack for the Switch version | Nintendo Switch 2, for people who already own the Switch version | Access to the Switch 2 Edition features without automatically buying another complete game | An existing owner moving from Switch to Switch 2 |
A Switch game card inserted into a Switch 2 can still launch the original Switch version. The card does not gain the Switch 2-exclusive features merely because it is being used in the newer console.

What the Switch 2 Edition actually changes
Enhanced resolution
The Switch 2 Edition is designed for the newer console’s display and processing capabilities. Nintendo describes enhanced resolution as one of the edition’s improvements. That is a visual upgrade, not a new island-building system, so it should be treated as a presentation benefit when deciding whether to pay for an upgrade.
Mouse control for decorating and Custom Designs
Nintendo says the edition adds mouse-control support for faster and easier decorating and for working with Custom Designs. This matters most to players who spend substantial time arranging furniture, shaping rooms or creating designs and who prefer a pointer-based input method. It is less important if you are comfortable doing all of that with standard Joy-Con or Pro Controller inputs.
A microphone-based megaphone
The Switch 2 Edition adds a megaphone for calling animal residents using the system microphone. Nintendo’s product description summarizes the enhancements as “enhanced resolution, mouse control support for faster and easier decorating, a megaphone for calling your animal residents that uses the system microphone, and more.” The megaphone is a feature of the Switch 2 Edition; it is not a reason to buy a separate microphone for the original Switch version.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVideo features and the camera requirement
Nintendo says a compatible camera is sold separately and is required for Switch 2 video features. CameraPlay is an example of that category. The camera requirement applies when you choose to use those video functions, not to routine island activities such as exploring, decorating with ordinary controls or visiting residents without video features.
Choose the edition by the console and game you already have
You are buying the game for a new Switch 2
The Switch 2 Edition is the cleanest one-purchase choice when you do not already own the game and want the enhanced features. It avoids having to start with the original edition and then decide how to add Switch 2 functionality later. If the visual and control improvements do not matter to you, the standard Switch version is still the relevant alternative, but confirm the exact product description before checkout so you know which edition you are purchasing.
You own the Switch version and are moving to Switch 2
Start with Nintendo’s upgrade-pack route. Nintendo explicitly supports an upgrade pack for existing owners of the Switch version. Compare that option with the price of another physical product at the time you buy; a second full copy may make sense only if its total cost, convenience or gifting value beats the upgrade route. Do not assume that inserting your old card into Switch 2 automatically unlocks the enhancements.
You still use a Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED
Buy or keep the original Switch edition. The Switch 2-only resolution, mouse controls and microphone megaphone are tied to the newer hardware and edition, so paying for them does not improve play on an original Switch-family console. For this group, budget is better directed toward storage, a replacement controller or a protective case only if you have a specific need; none of those accessories is required by the game itself.

You own both consoles
Decide where you will play most often. Keep the standard version as your baseline for Switch-family play, and use the Switch 2 Edition or an official upgrade pack when you want the newer console’s features. If you are buying a second copy for another household member, check whether that purchase is for convenience or for access to Switch 2 enhancements; those are different reasons and should be evaluated separately.
Upgrade pack or another physical copy?
Nintendo’s materials establish the upgrade pack as the supported path for an existing Switch-version owner. They do not establish a universal price in the information available here, and retailer pricing can change. Compare the current upgrade-pack charge with the current cost of a complete physical Switch 2 Edition before committing.
| Question | Upgrade pack | Another physical Switch 2 Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for an existing owner? | Yes; Nintendo identifies it specifically for owners of the Switch version | Not specifically; it is a complete product purchase |
| Do you buy the whole game again? | No additional complete game purchase is the purpose of this route | Yes, you acquire another full copy |
| Access to Switch 2 enhancements | Yes, once applied to the Switch version as Nintendo specifies | Yes, through the Switch 2 Edition |
| Price | Not stated here; check Nintendo’s current listing | Not stated here; check the current retailer or Nintendo listing |
| When it can be practical | You already own the game and only need the enhanced features | You want a separate copy, are replacing a lost copy, or the complete product is priced more favorably for your situation |
Use the upgrade-pack comparison before buying a second copy, especially when your existing game is a physical card. A card that runs the Switch version on Switch 2 is not defective when the enhancements are absent; it is behaving as the original edition is designed to behave.
Accessories: buy only for a defined use
Animal Crossing amiibo cards and figures
Amiibo are optional add-ons, not documented requirements for the base game. Nintendo lists compatibility with Animal Crossing amiibo Series 1–5, the Welcome amiibo range and the Sanrio Collaboration Pack. Supported cards or figures can be tapped to trigger the invitation and scanning interactions Nintendo documents.
Buy amiibo when you have a particular supported character, invitation goal or scanning interaction in mind. This is a feature-led purchase: the value comes from the characters and functions you want, not from owning a complete collection. If you do not care about those interactions, skipping amiibo does not block ordinary island progression documented for the base game.
Before buying a card or figure, check the product labeling against Nintendo’s supported groups. “Animal Crossing” branding alone is not enough to establish compatibility, and an item from an unrelated amiibo series should not be assumed to provide the same functions.
Compatible USB camera
A compatible USB camera is a narrow purchase for Switch 2 owners who intend to use video features such as CameraPlay. Nintendo states that the camera is sold separately and required for those functions. It is not presented as necessary for ordinary island play, so most players should skip it unless they have a concrete plan to use video.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
Check that the camera is described as compatible with Switch 2 before purchase. A generic USB plug does not, by itself, prove that a camera will work with the console’s supported video features. If your intended use is only decorating, Custom Designs or resident interactions without video, the camera adds no documented requirement.

Cases, grips and themed collectibles
Cases and grips can be sensible comfort or protection purchases, while themed figures, stationery and display items are collecting choices. Nintendo’s compatibility information for the game does not identify them as required gameplay hardware. Match a case or grip to the exact console model, because a Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED and Switch 2 have different physical dimensions and port arrangements.
Buy a themed accessory for a stated reason: protecting the console during travel, improving hand comfort, or collecting. If you cannot name that reason, it is a skip rather than a gameplay upgrade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to skip
- Do not automatically rebuy the complete Switch 2 Edition. If you already own the Switch version, compare Nintendo’s upgrade pack with the cost of another physical copy first.
- Do not buy amiibo speculatively. Skip them when you do not want supported scanning, invitations or related interactions.
- Do not buy a camera for normal play. Reserve a compatible USB camera for Switch 2 video features such as CameraPlay.
- Do not trust a generic compatibility label. Verify whether a case, grip, camera or other accessory matches your exact console model and intended feature.
- Do not expect a Switch card to become the Switch 2 Edition. On Switch 2 it can continue to run the original Switch version without the exclusive enhancements.
Buying and setup checklist
For a new Switch 2 owner
- Confirm that the listing says Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, not merely the original Switch edition.
- Decide whether enhanced resolution, mouse controls and the microphone megaphone justify choosing the newer edition for your play style.
- If you plan to use CameraPlay or another Switch 2 video function, add only a camera identified as compatible with Switch 2.
- Skip amiibo unless you have a supported character or scanning use in mind.
For an existing Switch-version owner
- Identify whether your current copy is the original Switch version; a Switch game card running on Switch 2 does not automatically include the enhancements.
- Check Nintendo’s current upgrade-pack offering for that version.
- Compare the upgrade-pack cost with a complete Switch 2 Edition, including whether you need a separate copy for another player.
- Choose the upgrade route when your goal is simply to add Switch 2 features to the game you already own.
For an original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED owner
- Choose the standard Switch edition if you are buying the game.
- Ignore Switch 2-specific feature claims when evaluating accessories for that console; they do not apply to the older hardware.
- Buy protection or comfort accessories only after checking the exact model name and dimensions.
Troubleshooting common purchase mistakes
“My card works, but I cannot find the Switch 2 features.”
That is expected when the card is the original Switch version. Nintendo states that a Switch game card inserted into Switch 2 can run that version without the Switch 2-exclusive features. Check whether you need the official upgrade pack or the separate Switch 2 Edition.
“I bought a camera, but I do not use video.”
The camera is optional for ordinary play. Keep it only if you intend to use a Switch 2 video feature such as CameraPlay and the device is confirmed compatible. Otherwise, it was not a required purchase.
“An accessory says Animal Crossing, but it does not fit.”
Branding does not guarantee model compatibility. Confirm whether the item is made for Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED or Switch 2 before opening the package. Cases and grips are especially model-specific.
“I am unsure whether an amiibo will work.”
Compare the item with Nintendo’s documented supported groups: Animal Crossing Series 1–5, Welcome amiibo or the Sanrio Collaboration Pack. If it is outside those groups, do not assume the same invitation or scanning behavior.
A simple decision framework
| Your situation | Buy | Skip unless needed |
|---|---|---|
| New Switch 2, wants every enhancement | Switch 2 Edition | Camera unless using video; amiibo without a character goal |
| Existing Switch owner upgrading to Switch 2 | Compare and usually start with the official upgrade-pack option | A second full copy bought without a price or convenience reason |
| Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED owner | Standard Switch edition | Switch 2-specific hardware and features |
| Collector or character-focused player | Supported amiibo cards or figures tied to a specific goal | Unrelated or unsupported amiibo purchases |
| Player focused on travel or comfort | Model-matched case or grip | Accessories that do not fit the exact console |
The practical order is console first, edition second, accessory purpose third. Once those three answers are clear, most unnecessary purchases disappear: original Switch hardware points to the standard game, a new Switch 2 points to the Switch 2 Edition only when its enhancements matter, and existing owners should compare the upgrade pack before rebuying the game.
