Angular vs. AngularJS: Key Differences, Support, and Migration

AngularJS is the unsupported 1.x framework; Angular is the separate, actively maintained framework from version 2 onward. Compare their models, support, and upgrade paths.

AngularJS and Angular are separate generations of Google’s web framework, not two names for the same current product. AngularJS refers to version 1.x; Angular refers to the framework from version 2.0 onward. They differ in their programming models, support status, and upgrade paths.

Angular vs. AngularJS at a glance

Area AngularJS Angular
Generation Angular version 1.x Angular 2.0 and later
Core concepts in official documentation HTML directives, controllers, data binding, dependency injection, and plain JavaScript objects Components and dependency injection; documented capabilities include signals, server-side rendering (SSR), and static site generation (SSG)
Support Official support ended in January 2022. Major releases typically receive 12 months of active support followed by 12 months of long-term support (LTS). Check the live release and support table for current version status.
Upgrade approach Has separate AngularJS upgrade guidance. Provides migration tooling for updates to newer Angular features; AngularJS upgrades are handled separately.

Angular’s versioning documentation defines AngularJS as 1.x and applies Angular’s versioning practices to 2.0 and later. See Angular versioning and releases.

How the programming models differ

AngularJS: directives, controllers, and binding

AngularJS extends HTML with directives for dynamic applications. Its official overview centers on directives, controllers, data binding, dependency injection, and plain JavaScript objects. This is a distinct model from modern Angular’s component-centered approach. Read the AngularJS project overview.

Angular: components and newer capabilities

Modern Angular describes itself as a web framework maintained by Google. Its documentation covers a component model and dependency injection, alongside signals, SSR, and SSG. These capabilities help distinguish the framework generations, but do not establish that Angular is faster for every application. See What is Angular?.

Support and version status

AngularJS is no longer supported

The AngularJS project states that its support officially ended in January 2022 and points visitors toward Angular. Teams maintaining AngularJS applications should treat that framework as unsupported rather than assume it receives ongoing official fixes.

Angular has a rolling release policy

Angular’s policy says major releases are typically supported for 24 months: 12 months of active support followed by 12 months of LTS. The versions listed as supported change over time, so consult the current release table rather than relying on a static version list.

What AngularJS-to-Angular migration involves

Moving from AngularJS to Angular is not an ordinary version update: the generations have separate programming models and separate upgrade guidance. Angular’s update documentation directs AngularJS users to a distinct upgrade guide. Angular’s own migration tooling supports incremental migrations to newer Angular features, including standalone components and built-in control flow; that tooling is not a substitute for the separate AngularJS upgrade path.

Because the accessible AngularJS upgrade guidance does not establish a verifiable, detailed conversion sequence here, do not treat a generic checklist as an official procedure. Start with Angular’s project update guidance and follow its AngularJS-specific direction, confirming the current instructions before planning a migration.

Which framework should you choose?

  • Starting a new project: AngularJS is unsupported, so evaluate the actively maintained Angular framework rather than beginning a new application on AngularJS.
  • Maintaining an existing AngularJS application: Factor in the January 2022 end of official support and assess a migration using the separate AngularJS upgrade guidance.
  • Already using Angular: Use Angular’s release policy and migration tooling to plan updates between supported Angular releases; check the current version table before setting a target.

When screenshots are part of your development workflow

Framework documentation, rendered pages, and regression checks may all involve capturing web pages. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.

Or skip the browser setup

Make one GET request for a screenshot. The following cURL example saves a WebP image; replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
  • Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
