Their small-value denominations, varied English origins and archaeological context point to exchange and skilled work alongside pilgrimage—but they do not prove that a pope granted the community a special right to use English currency.
What was found beneath the garden?
Excavations beneath the walled garden of the Palazzo della Rovere uncovered 20 Anglo-Saxon coins. The University of Cambridge describes them as the first material evidence identified for the Schola Saxonum, Rome’s early medieval English quarter. The find concerns medieval silver money, not coins from classical Rome. University of Cambridge
The group consists of 19 silver pennies and one halfpenny, associated with the tenth-century reigns of Edward the Elder, Æthelstan and Eadred. Researchers traced English examples to East Anglia, Kent, London and the West Midlands. Cambridge-issued release hosted by EurekAlert
What does the coins’ context tell us?
Fourteen of the coins were recovered in two clusters of rubbish pits; the rest were scattered nearby. The same excavation uncovered ten Roman-period or tenth-century Italian coins, as well as evidence of leather-, bone- and metalworking. These are separate strands of evidence: the coins show that English money reached the site, while the craft remains indicate practical work in its surroundings. Their proximity is consistent with a community where people lived and worked, rather than a place used only by passing pilgrims. University of Cambridge

Why is a halfpenny significant?
The halfpenny was a low-value denomination. The researchers associate such coins with trading hubs and frequent small payments, making it consistent with everyday exchange. Alongside the pennies and craft evidence, it supports the interpretation of an active local economy. It cannot reveal what any particular purchase was, how often transactions took place, or the scale of the quarter’s economy. Cambridge-issued release hosted by EurekAlert
Do the finds prove the quarter had a special currency privilege?
No. The coins make the question of how English money circulated in Rome more tangible, and researchers discuss the possibility of special currency privileges in light of the historical context. But coins found at the site do not establish the legal basis for their use. The Cambridge-issued account specifically cautions that the evidence does not prove Alfred secured a currency agreement with the pope. Such an arrangement remains a possibility, not a demonstrated fact; the finds also do not identify which ruler, if any, might have obtained one. Cambridge-issued release hosted by EurekAlert

What was the Schola Saxonum?
The Schola Saxonum was an early medieval community in Rome associated with English pilgrims and residents. “Little Englanders” is a catchy modern shorthand, not a precise description of a modern-style national enclave. The coins add physical evidence to a history previously known without material remains of the English quarter, as Cambridge historian Francesca Tinti explained: “Before this big discovery, we never had any material remains of the English quarter in Rome.” University of Cambridge
The excavation does not yield a population count or a numerical estimate of the community’s economic activity. Its significance is more specific: it links English coinage, nearby crafts and a Roman site associated with English pilgrims and residents. As Cambridge historian Rory Naismith put it, “The coins aren’t pretty but they have a lot to say.” University of Cambridge
