Angelfall and Diablo IV share an isometric dark-fantasy appearance, but they are built around different games loops. Angelfall is an upcoming roguelike reverse-horror game in which you play an Archdemon, kill humans and angels, harvest Souls, and reshape a build during each run. Diablo IV is an established action RPG about a persistent hero in Sanctuary, with class skills, gear, quests, dungeons, open-world events, seasonal and Eternal realms, and long-term endgame progression.
That distinction matters more than the camera angle. Choose Angelfall if you want experimental run-based builds and the unusual perspective of playing the monster. Choose Diablo IV if you want a currently released campaign-to-endgame RPG with a larger world, established social systems, and cross-platform progression.

Angelfall vs Diablo IV at a glance
The games may look adjacent in screenshots, yet their moment-to-moment goals differ. Angelfall asks you to make the most of a temporary run: defeat enemies, collect Souls and other run resources, select or reroll abilities, and find combinations that can carry you through escalating encounters. Diablo IV asks you to develop a hero over time: learn a class, improve equipment, complete activities across Sanctuary, and keep refining a character through seasonal or Eternal progression.

What Angelfall actually is
A reverse-horror premise
Angelfall reverses the familiar dark-fantasy viewpoint. Instead of defending a settlement or trying to save humanity, you control a powerful Archdemon. Humans and angelic forces are the prey, and the fantasy is about escalating demonic power rather than survival as a vulnerable adventurer. The official Steam description calls it “a roguelike reverse-horror game” in which the Archdemon slaughters hordes of humans, harvests their souls and discovers devastating synergies.
That role changes the emotional and mechanical framing. Enemies are not merely obstacles between you and a quest reward; they are the source of the Souls and other resources that let the run become more dangerous and more powerful. The game’s dark tone comes from making the player the invading force, not from placing a conventional hero in another haunted dungeon.
Run-based hack-and-slash combat
The listed combat format is top-down hack-and-slash/roguelite PvE with bullet-hell elements. You fight through groups of enemies, survive attacks that can fill the screen, and adapt as a run develops. Challenging enemies and bosses are part of the advertised structure, so a successful run depends on both offensive combinations and the ability to read threats in crowded encounters.

Angelfall’s description emphasizes choices made during runs rather than a fixed rotation that remains identical from one attempt to the next. Abilities can be chosen or rerolled, and skills, runes, passives and specializations can be combined to produce synergies. The result should be a game where two runs can begin from a similar foundation but diverge as different upgrades appear.
Souls, Corruption and the Hellforge
Souls are the central reward named in the listing. You harvest them from defeated enemies and use run resources to shape the Archdemon’s power. The Corruption passive tree and the Hellforge are described as systems for reshaping builds between or during runs. In practical terms, that points to two layers of decision-making:
- Immediate run choices: Select or reroll abilities, add runes and passives, and respond to what appears in the current map.
- Broader build direction: Use the Corruption tree and Hellforge to alter the way your abilities interact and determine which synergies you are trying to assemble.
Because the game is not yet available, the exact costs, reset rules, upgrade limits and persistence of these systems have not been confirmed in the cited material. The important contrast with Diablo IV is structural: Angelfall advertises build construction as a defining part of each run, not only as a permanent character project.
Maps, events and secrets
Runs can include random events, challenges and secrets, alongside ordinary enemy encounters and bosses. Dynamic music is also advertised, suggesting that the presentation can react to what happens during a run. These features support replayability: the player is expected to learn how systems work while also responding to changing layouts, events and enemy situations.
What Diablo IV actually is
A persistent action RPG in Sanctuary
Diablo IV is set in the corrupted world of Sanctuary. Blizzard describes it as a dark-fantasy action RPG with an expansive open world, quests, vicious enemies, loot, skill trees and gear upgrades. The central story threat is Lilith’s return after catastrophic events, but the game is not limited to a linear campaign route.

Your hero persists as you move between activities. Character development is tied to a class, equipment and skill choices, while the world provides quests, dungeons, events and larger encounters. The structure is designed for players who want to continue improving a character after the campaign rather than restart the entire progression loop for every attempt.
Class-based combat
Blizzard’s launch material identified five classes: Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue and Sorcerer. Each class supplies a different set of skills and combat patterns, and gear modifies how those skills perform. That makes class selection an early commitment: it determines the basic vocabulary of attacks, defenses and resource management you will use while exploring Sanctuary.
Diablo IV’s combat is therefore built around a stable character identity that can be tuned with skill selections and equipment. A Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue or Sorcerer can be rebuilt within the options available to that class, but you are not changing from one class into another every time a new run begins.
Open-world and endgame activities
Beyond the campaign, the game includes dungeons with variable layouts, Strongholds, local events and world bosses. Blizzard also describes cooperative play, PvE and PvP activities, seasonal and Eternal realms, and a robust endgame. These systems create several reasons to keep playing after the main story:
- Dungeons: Repeatable spaces whose layouts can vary, giving gear and build improvement a continuing objective.
- Strongholds and local events: World activities that break up dungeon runs and make the open map part of progression.
- World bosses: Large encounters designed around broader combat situations than ordinary packs of enemies.
- Seasonal realms: A periodically refreshed progression context for players who want a reset or new seasonal framework.
- Eternal realm: A persistent context for continuing a character without moving into a seasonal reset.
- PvE and PvP: Options for fighting computer-controlled enemies or competing with other players.
How the combat loops differ
Angelfall: improvise inside a run
Angelfall’s combat loop is built around temporary power growth. You enter a run, defeat enemies, collect Souls and other resources, and use the available choices to assemble a combination that can handle increasingly difficult encounters. Rerolls matter because an ability that is weak in isolation may become valuable when paired with a particular rune, passive or specialization.
The bullet-hell label adds a second demand: positioning and avoidance. A powerful build still has to survive dense patterns of incoming attacks. Bosses and random events can force you to abandon a comfortable plan and select a less obvious option that keeps the run alive.
Diablo IV: execute and refine a class build
Diablo IV’s combat loop begins with a class and persists through equipment upgrades, skill-tree decisions and repeated activities. You learn how your class generates and spends resources, which abilities control groups or single targets, and which gear improvements support the build. The open world and dungeon structure then give you places to test and refine that setup.
Because the character persists, a failed encounter does not normally erase the entire development arc. You can adjust skills, replace equipment, change activities or continue improving the same hero. The game’s variety comes from class choices, gear and the many activities available in Sanctuary rather than from starting a wholly new run whenever a build attempt ends.

What cannot be fairly declared yet
Official descriptions establish the intended systems, not measured input latency, animation responsiveness, enemy density or difficulty balance. Angelfall’s eventual combat feel may depend on details that are not available until players can use the released game. It is reasonable to compare the advertised structures; it is not reasonable to claim that one has objectively better responsiveness without controlled playtesting.
Progression and build variety
Angelfall’s run-to-run experimentation
Angelfall’s advertised variety comes from combinations. Skills, runes, passives and specializations can be mixed, while rerolls let you search for a more useful set of options. The Corruption tree and Hellforge add additional ways to alter a build. This should appeal to players who enjoy discovering an unexpectedly strong interaction during a single session.
The trade-off is that run-based variety is not the same as permanent accumulation. The available material does not specify exactly which upgrades survive a run, how much progress carries forward, or whether every system can be reset freely. Until those rules are published, treat the depth of persistence as an open question rather than assuming it matches a conventional long-term ARPG.

Diablo IV provides a more familiar long-term progression path. Your hero’s class, skill-tree choices, loot and gear upgrades remain central as you move through the campaign and into endgame activities. Seasonal and Eternal realms offer different contexts for that progression, allowing players to pursue a refreshed seasonal experience or continue with a persistent character.
Its build variety is therefore distributed across classes and equipment. The five launch classes create distinct starting identities, and each class can be adjusted through its skills and the gear it acquires. The structure favors players who want to improve one character over many sessions and measure progress through stronger equipment and increasingly demanding activities.
Which has more build variety?
There is no single answer because the games define variety differently. Angelfall appears to offer more immediate combinatorial experimentation inside an individual run, especially through rerolls and run-specific synergies. Diablo IV offers a broader persistent framework: five launch classes, class skill trees, gear, seasonal and Eternal progression, and multiple endgame contexts.
If “variety” means discovering a new combination every attempt, Angelfall is the closer fit. If it means maintaining several developed characters and refining them across a large activity ecosystem, Diablo IV is the more established option.

Angelfall’s focused run maps
Angelfall is organized around runs rather than a single continuous open world. Random events, challenges, secrets and bosses create variation within that framework. The advantage is focus: a session can revolve around making a build work under changing conditions. The limitation is that the game’s world scale, campaign length and long-term activity structure are not established by the current listing.

Diablo IV’s shared Sanctuary
Diablo IV offers a large shared world with a campaign, quests, dungeons, Strongholds, local events and world bosses. The open-world format lets you move between story objectives and repeatable activities rather than selecting only one run map. Cooperative and PvP options add social reasons to return, while seasonal and Eternal realms organize longer-term participation.
This makes Diablo IV the stronger match for a player who wants a destination world with multiple types of content. Angelfall is the stronger conceptual match for someone who prefers a compact, replayable run structure in which the build itself is the main story of a session.
Co-op, platforms and availability
Angelfall’s advertised multiplayer
The Steam listing advertises single-player, online co-op and LAN co-op. That is an announced feature set, not proof that all modes are currently playable. The game and its demo are marked “Coming soon,” and the cited pages do not provide a confirmed release date or a current purchase option.

Diablo IV’s released ecosystem
Diablo IV is documented for Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Blizzard announced cross-play and cross-progression, so supported players can play together across those platforms and carry eligible progression between them. The game also supports cooperative play and PvP alongside its PvE campaign and endgame activities.
Check the marketplace and edition for the platform you intend to use before purchasing, since availability and included content can vary by platform and edition. The key comparison is timing: Diablo IV is playable now as a released product, while Angelfall remains unreleased according to its Steam pages.

Bottom line: different answers to the same dark-fantasy impulse
Angelfall is not simply another Diablo-style action RPG. Its defining idea is role reversal, and its advertised systems support that idea with run-based progression, Souls, rerolls and build synergies. It is the more experimental proposition, but it is still marked as coming soon and cannot yet be judged as a finished release.
