We could not locate the interview it comes from, an original recording or transcript, or any survey behind the number. We do not attribute the figure, or any quotation on age verification, Big Tech or AI, to Andy Yen. This article explains what would have to be true for the claim to mean something, what the three topics in the headline would need in order to be sourced, and how you can check the claim yourself.
What we could and could not confirm
The available material is thin, and it is mostly adjacent to the interview rather than part of it.

- A June 5, 2026 episode of the WAN Show, a tech podcast, discussed Proton Mail and Google. It described Proton Mail as a possible bridge for people who use Gmail and treated encryption and privacy as part of the service’s appeal. Those are the show’s remarks, not Andy Yen’s.
- A transcript listing from the privacy podcast This Week in Privacy covered privacy opt-outs and age or identity verification. We did not establish its date, and it does not feature Yen.
- We found no verified Andy Yen quotation on age verification, Big Tech, AI or the future of digital privacy, and no publisher, date, geography or method for the headline’s figure.
The “nine out of ten” figure
A percentage like this only means something once you know who was counted and what they were asked. Before accepting any version of it, check the following:

| Question to ask | Why it changes the meaning |
|---|---|
| Who was surveyed? | A sample of existing Proton users would be expected to favour Proton. A general public sample is a different and stronger claim. |
| What was the exact question? | “Which do you prefer?” and “Which protects your data better?” measure different things and can produce different results. |
| What is “Google’s version” compared with? | Search, email, maps and Android are separate products. A preference for one does not establish a preference for the whole internet. |
| How many people, and when? | A small or dated sample cannot support a present-tense claim about people in general. |
| Who ran it, and was it published? | An unpublished or unnamed figure cannot be checked by readers, so it should be treated as an estimate at most. |
What “our version of the internet” could mean
The phrase is not defined in anything we could trace. The readings below are possible interpretations, not statements by Yen. Each one can be tested against different evidence.
#1 Best Overall

- Easy Flip Mechanism: Can be turned 180 angle and easily take the cover off when flipping more than 180

Privacy by default
One reading is that the service collects less data about users and does not use their content for advertising. To test it, read the provider’s current privacy policy and check which categories of data it says it collects for each product.
Encryption and who holds the keys
A second reading centres on encryption. The test is which messages are encrypted end to end, and which are not. Coverage usually changes when mail goes to or comes from an outside provider. The WAN Show’s point that Google may still access mail sent to Gmail addresses shows why this matters. Confirm the behaviour against the provider’s current documentation rather than a podcast.

Control and portability
A third reading is about control: whether users can export their data and leave without losing access to their accounts or messages. This is checkable in account settings and in the provider’s stated export tools.
Age verification, Big Tech and AI
The headline names three topics. The material we could trace does not establish Yen’s position on any of them, so the points below are questions to answer from the full interview.

Age verification
Age checks differ widely in what they collect and who receives it. Establish which policy is meant: a specific law, a particular platform, or a general principle. The privacy question is usually who receives identity or age data, how long it is kept, and whether the verifier can link that data to later activity.
Big Tech
“Big Tech” is a loose label. Confirm whether the remarks name specific companies, and whether the criticism is about data collection, market power or content moderation. Each leads to different evidence.

AI
Separate predictions, opinions and descriptions of current products. A forecast about where AI systems are heading cannot be checked the way a feature of a shipping product can. Only the last category can be tested against documentation.
How to check the claim yourself
- Search the exact headline phrase in quotation marks, adding the publisher’s name if you have it. Confirm the publication date.
- Find the full recording or transcript. Locate the “nine out of ten” passage and note its timestamp and the question that prompted it.
- If a survey is cited, find its publisher, sample, exact question wording and fieldwork dates. If none is cited, treat the figure as an opinion.
- Sort each remark on AI, Big Tech and age verification into prediction, opinion or description of a current product.
- For any product claim, check the provider’s current official documentation before relying on a podcast or a headline.
The Proton Mail and Gmail question
The WAN Show framed Proton Mail as a bridge for Gmail users. That is a product claim, so check it against current official material. Confirm the following:
