An Android version update moves an Xperia to a newer platform release, such as Android 14 to Android 15. A security patch fixes disclosed vulnerabilities and is identified by a dated Android security-patch level. They are separate release tracks: your Xperia may receive only a security update, a full Android upgrade, or one package containing both.
Check both fields after every notification. The Android version tells you which platform you run; the Android security-update date tells you how current your vulnerability coverage is. Sony’s 2026 support tables list the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI for Android 14, 15 and 16, with security support dates in 2028, while newer Xperia 1 VII and 10 VII models are listed through 2031.

The difference in one minute
An Android version update is a platform change. It can modify system behavior, introduce or remove user-facing features, change application programming interfaces (APIs) and permission rules, and affect compatibility with apps, accessories and enterprise tools. Sony presents these changes as a sequence of platform releases—for example, Android 14 → 15 → 16—not as a patch date.

A security patch is maintenance for known vulnerabilities. It can update Android framework components, the Linux kernel, device drivers or chipset-related components without changing the phone’s main Android version. A phone can therefore remain on Android 15 while its security-update date advances from one month to the next.

How Android version updates work on Xperia phones
What changes when the version number changes
If the Android version shown in Settings changes from 14 to 15, or from 15 to 16, the phone has moved to a newer platform release. The update may bring new controls, revised background-process rules, changed notification or privacy behavior, updated APIs for developers, and new permission decisions. Existing settings can be reorganized or reset when the new release requires a different policy.
The visible feature list is only part of the change. An Android release also defines the behavior that apps and accessories depend on. An application that worked on Android 14 may request permissions differently on Android 15; an older accessory may rely on a behavior that the newer platform restricts. These are reasons to check critical apps, work profiles, banking tools and camera or audio accessories after a major upgrade.
How Sony lists platform support
Sony’s model tables show platform progression as a chain of Android releases. For current models, that chain is:
- Xperia 1 VI (2024): Android 14 → 15 → 16.
- Xperia 10 VI (2024): Android 14 → 15 → 16.
- Xperia 1 VII (2025): Android 15 → 16.
- Xperia 10 VII (2025): Android 15 → 16.
The starting version reflects the software supplied for that model, so a newer phone can have fewer listed transitions while still receiving a longer security-support period.
How Android security patches work
The patch date is a coverage marker
Android reports a security-patch level in date format, such as 2026-06-01 or 2026-06-05. The date is not the phone’s Android version and does not tell you whether the device runs Android 14, 15 or 16. It identifies the set of security fixes the installed software claims to include.
In the Android Open Source Project’s June 2026 bulletin, a security-patch level of 2026-06-01 or later addresses all issues associated with that level. A level of 2026-06-05 or later addresses the applicable issues from that bulletin and previous bulletins. The two levels let partners deliver a subset of related fixes more quickly when the complete set is not ready for every device.
Where the fixes originate
Android security bulletins can include fixes from the Android Open Source Project, the upstream Linux kernel and system-on-chip manufacturers. The AOSP overview describes monthly device updates as an important tool for keeping Android users safe and protecting their devices.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Bulletins are published on the first Monday of each month unless that Monday is a holiday. Publication of a bulletin does not mean every Xperia receives an update that day. Sony and network operators must integrate, test and distribute device-specific software, and timing can differ by market.
Why a patch may change the build number
A security package is firmware, so installing it can produce a new build number even when the Android version remains unchanged. The build identifier is useful for support and troubleshooting, but it is not the primary answer to “Which Android version am I running?” Read the Android version and Android security-update fields separately.
Reading the two patch levels correctly
The day number in a patch level is not a score or a promise of a particular feature set. It identifies a publication branch and the fixes included in that branch. When the Settings screen shows 2026-06-01, it means the software includes the issues assigned to that level or later. A displayed 2026-06-05 indicates the later, applicable set as well as fixes from earlier bulletins. Both are valid coverage markers; the later date is not automatically an Android-version upgrade.
Security fixes are cumulative in practical use: a current level is intended to include the applicable earlier fixes for that device. If an Xperia skips a monthly notification and later receives a newer package, the later package can bring its coverage forward without displaying every intermediate date. The exact contents still depend on the model’s hardware, software branch and operator certification.
Android platform security fixes are merged into AOSP 24–48 hours after the quarterly security bulletin is released. That is the point at which the platform code becomes available to manufacturers; it is not the delivery date for a retail Xperia. Sony must combine those fixes with chipset and device changes, test the resulting firmware and qualify it for each sales channel.
What a combined update package means
Some notifications describe both an Android version change and a new security level. In that case, the package is doing two jobs: moving the platform to the next release and setting the device to the security level included in that build. A large download, a longer restart and several changed settings are more likely with this kind of package.
Other notifications contain only maintenance fixes. The build number can still change, and the phone may restart, but the Android-version field stays the same. Do not judge the package by its size, title or build identifier alone. Record the values before installation, then compare Android version and security-update date afterward.
What Sony’s current Xperia dates mean
Sony’s 2026 support information lists the following security-support endpoints. These are listed dates, not a promise that every country or operator will deliver every release on the same day.
| Model | Model year | Android versions listed by Sony | Security updates listed through |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xperia 1 VI | 2024 | 14 → 15 → 16 | 2028-04-01 |
| Xperia 10 VI | 2024 | 14 → 15 → 16 | 2028-05-01 |
| Xperia 1 VII | 2025 | 15 → 16 | 2031-04-01 |
| Xperia 10 VII | 2025 | 15 → 16 | 2031-08-01 |
For context, Sony’s US overview records older progression patterns including Xperia 1 V at Android 14 → 15 → 16, Xperia 10 V at 13 → 14 → 15, and Xperia 1 IV at 12 → 13 → 14. A listed progression does not guarantee simultaneous availability worldwide: Sony says release availability depends on country, region and operator.
How to identify the update you just received
- Open Settings and inspect both Android version and Android security update. The exact labels or menu location can vary by Xperia software build.
- Compare the Android-version value with the value shown before the installation. If it changed, you received a platform upgrade.
- Compare the security-update date. If only that date changed, the installation was a security-maintenance release even if the build number also changed.
- Check your model-specific Sony support page to see whether the installed Android version and patch date are listed for your device.
- If the update is not visible, account for Sony’s country, region and operator qualification before treating the delay as a fault.
A concrete Xperia 1 VI example
Sony’s Xperia 1 VI release information records a security-patch level updated to August 1, 2026, alongside separate entries for the Android 15 and Android 16 operating-system upgrades. That arrangement demonstrates how one product lifecycle can show monthly or periodic security maintenance independently from major Android releases.
Why your Xperia can stay on the old Android version
Security maintenance does not require the newest platform
Google and device manufacturers can ship vulnerability fixes for the Android version already installed. Waiting for Android 16 does not make an Android 15 security patch unnecessary. If the Android version is unchanged but the security-update date advances, the phone has still received meaningful protection.
Rollouts are market-specific
Sony explicitly qualifies availability by country, region and operator. A device sold unlocked in one market may receive software before an operator-sold variant elsewhere. Staged distribution, certification and regional testing can also separate two otherwise identical model numbers.

The model may have reached its platform limit
Sony’s table is the authoritative place to check the platform sequence for your exact model and market. If the table lists no additional Android release, a later security patch may still be scheduled until the listed security-support date. Platform-upgrade eligibility and security-support duration are different decisions.
Should you install a security patch if you do not want Android 16?
Yes, when it is offered for your Xperia. A security patch addresses vulnerabilities without necessarily changing the Android platform version, so declining it to avoid a future major upgrade leaves known issues unresolved. Read the installation screen to confirm whether the package is security-only or combines a security level with an Android-version change.
Before a major version upgrade, review important app and accessory compatibility and make sure your data is backed up. For a security-only package, the same backup habit is sensible, but the scope of change is generally narrower. Keep the phone on power and use a reliable connection during installation; do not interrupt a restart or firmware-installation screen.
What to check after any update
- Record the new Android version, security-update date and build number.
- Open apps that handle payments, authentication, work access, messaging and backups.
- Review permissions for apps that use the camera, microphone, location, contacts or nearby devices.
- Check battery behavior, background activity and notification delivery over the next charging cycle.
- Reconnect essential Bluetooth, USB, display and audio accessories if a major version changed.
- Read Sony’s model-specific notes if a feature or setting moved.
Troubleshooting missing or confusing updates
The notification says “update” but the Android version did not change
Open the two status fields rather than relying on the notification wording. If only the security-update date and build number changed, it was a security release. Install it unless you have a specific administrative reason not to; the unchanged platform number does not mean nothing important happened.
The Android version changed but the patch date looks old
A platform upgrade can be prepared with a particular security level, and the displayed date is the coverage level included in the installed build. Compare both values with Sony’s release notes for your model. Do not infer the patch date from the Android version number.
Another Xperia owner received the update first
Check whether the phones are from the same country, region and operator channel. Sony’s availability qualification means that different rollout timing is expected. Also verify the exact model variant before comparing software notices.
The update is not offered at all
- Confirm the exact model and current Android security-update date in Settings.
- Check Sony’s support table for the model’s listed Android sequence and security endpoint.
- Allow for regional or operator staging rather than repeatedly forcing an installation.
- Use Sony support if the device is past a listed date, shows an installation error, or does not match the software expected for its sales region.
How to plan an Xperia’s remaining support life
Use two separate questions. First, which Android versions does Sony list for this model? Second, through what date does Sony list security updates? For example, the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI both show three platform numbers—14, 15 and 16—but their listed security endpoints differ by one month: April 1, 2028, for the 1 VI and May 1, 2028, for the 10 VI. The Xperia 1 VII and 10 VII start at Android 15, list Android 16, and carry security dates in 2031.
When evaluating an older Xperia, a current security-update date is more informative than the Android version alone. Conversely, a phone can have a recent platform release but be near the end of its listed security-support period. Record both dates when deciding whether to keep, repair or replace the device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA simple update-day checklist
- Note the current Android version, security-update date and build number before tapping install.
- Read whether the notice names an Android version, a security level, or both.
- Back up important photos, messages, authentication data and work files before a platform upgrade.
- Keep enough battery and use a stable connection; leave the phone undisturbed during restart and firmware installation.
- Afterward, verify both status fields and record the new values for future support conversations.
- Test security-sensitive and work-critical apps before relying on the phone for payments, travel or authentication.
This process prevents a common mistake: assuming that a changed build number means Android itself changed. It also gives you a dated record if a later support agent needs to identify the exact software branch.
Key points to remember
- Android version updates and security patches are different release types.
- The security-patch date identifies vulnerability coverage; it is not the Android platform version.
- A build-number change alone does not prove that Android itself was upgraded.
- Country, region and operator affect Xperia rollout timing.
- Sony lists Android 14 → 15 → 16 for the Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI, with security support dates in 2028.
- Check both Android version and Android security update after every notification.
- A phone can remain on the same Android release while receiving important security fixes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an Xperia security patch the same as a full Android update?
No. A full update changes the Android platform number. A security patch updates vulnerability coverage and may leave that number unchanged. One package can contain both, so check both Settings fields.
Why did my build number change when Android did not?
Firmware maintenance packages receive new build identifiers even when the platform stays on the same Android release. Use the Android version and Android security-update date to classify the update.
What does an Android security date such as 2026-06-05 mean?
It is a coverage marker. A level of 2026-06-05 or later addresses the applicable issues from that bulletin and previous bulletins. It is not the Android version number.

How often are Android security bulletins published?
Android bulletins are published on the first Monday of each month unless that Monday is a holiday. Xperia delivery can occur later because Sony and operators integrate, test and certify each regional build.
Do I need a security patch if I plan to stay on Android 15?
Yes. Security fixes can be delivered to the Android version already installed. Declining a security-only package leaves known vulnerabilities unresolved even if you do not want Android 16.
How long will the Xperia 1 VI receive security updates?
Sony’s 2026 table lists security updates through 2028-04-01 for the Xperia 1 VI and Android 14, 15 and 16 as its platform sequence.
Why has another Xperia owner received an update before me?
Sony says availability depends on country, region and operator. Different sales channels can therefore receive the same model’s software at different times.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What should I do after a major Android upgrade?
Verify the Android version and patch date, review changed permissions and settings, then test payment, authentication, work, messaging and accessory functions. Keep a backup and do not interrupt installation or restart screens.
The Bottom Line
Think of Xperia support as two timelines: Android versions describe platform upgrades, while the security-update date describes vulnerability coverage. Check both after every notification, install offered security fixes even when you remain on the same Android release, and use Sony’s country- and operator-specific table to judge eligibility and remaining support.
