Choose according to the device and the job: Android TV’s built-in home screen is designed to surface shows, movies and apps on a shared television, while a minimalist phone launcher such as Niagara puts a cleaner, list-based route to apps on a personal Android phone. They are not direct substitutes. For a TV, decide whether household discovery features help; for a phone, decide whether a pared-back app list suits your habits.
Start with the device you want to change
A television is typically shared and controlled from a distance with a remote. A phone is personal and operated by touch. Those differences shape what belongs on the home screen: a TV interface can foreground viewing choices for several people, while a phone launcher can prioritize quick access to one person’s apps.

So the useful comparison is not which launcher is universally better. It is whether the home screen for that particular device should emphasize content discovery or a direct, quieter route to apps.
What Android TV’s built-in home screen offers
Google describes Android TV Home as a place for suggested content, downloaded apps, and shows or movies you started but did not finish. The interface includes Search, Home, Discover, Apps and Settings areas. Discover recommendations can reflect viewing activity, interests, selected services and account activity when the relevant settings are enabled. See Google’s Android TV home-screen guide.

When its discovery features help
For a household that wants recommendations and a reminder of unfinished viewing alongside its apps, the built-in layout may already serve the main purpose. It can reduce the need to open services one by one just to browse what is available.
When control matters more
If the household wants a less content-led first screen, check what the specific TV lets you change before choosing another launcher. Google documents adding, removing and reordering channel rows, but warns: “Not all Android TVs have these settings.” Available controls and behavior can vary by device.

What a minimalist phone launcher offers
Niagara is an example of a phone-oriented launcher, not a TV launcher. Its publisher presents a clean, list-style interface intended to make a minimalist Android phone home screen. Its Google Play listing describes customization options such as themes, widgets, wallpapers and icons.
When a simpler phone screen fits
A list-based interface may suit someone who prefers a direct app route over a more visually busy home screen. It is a personal-phone choice: the evidence here does not establish Niagara as a suitable replacement for an Android TV home screen.

What simplicity asks you to give up
Niagara offers free features and a paid Niagara Launcher Pro tier with additional options, including themes, icon and font customization, calendar and weather widgets, pop-up folders and widget stacks. Feature availability and pricing can change, so check the official Niagara site for current details. Its help page on visual customization explains that it intentionally omits some requested customization to preserve a simpler product. That makes it a better fit for people who value restraint than for those who want to tune every part of a layout.
Compare the decision points
| Decision | Android TV home screen | Minimalist phone launcher |
|---|---|---|
| Device and input | Shared television, generally navigated with a remote. | Personal Android phone, operated by touch. |
| First-screen emphasis | Suggested viewing, apps and unfinished shows or movies. | A compact, direct route to phone apps; Niagara uses a list-style interface. |
| Discovery or control | Content recommendations can be part of the experience; some channel-row controls are documented, but vary by device. | Emphasizes a clean app interface; available customization depends on the feature and tier. |
| Setup and compatibility | Check the actual TV’s settings. The documented material does not establish a model-by-model compatibility list for third-party TV launchers. | Choose and configure a phone launcher for the phone; Niagara’s publisher lists free and Pro features. |
How to make the choice
- Name the device. If the target is a television, assess its built-in Android TV home screen. If it is a phone, assess a phone launcher such as Niagara. Do not treat them as interchangeable products.
- Decide what should appear first. On a TV, consider whether the household wants suggested shows, unfinished viewing and apps together. On a phone, consider whether a clean list and quick app access suit the owner.
- Check the controls you actually have. For a TV, inspect its home-screen settings rather than assuming another model offers the same row controls. For Niagara, compare the current free and Pro feature lists against the customization you want.
- Account for setup and trade-offs. A more configurable interface can take more effort to tune. A minimalist design can mean fewer layout and behavior choices by design.
What to check before trying a different TV launcher
If your real question is “Is there a really minimal Android TV launcher?”, first establish what you want to simplify—recommendations, channel rows, or the route to apps—and what your exact television or streaming device supports. Google’s guide documents variation in built-in settings, but the cited material does not provide a full compatibility list for third-party replacements. Verify support for the exact model before relying on a particular launcher; do not assume a phone launcher will work on a TV.
