Most Android problems can be narrowed down without wiping the phone. First determine whether one app is failing or the entire device is freezing, restarting, or running slowly. Then work from reversible checks—restart, updates, and storage—before testing in safe mode. Clear app data and a factory reset come only after you understand their data-loss consequences.
Start by identifying what is actually failing
The fastest diagnosis is to define the scope of the symptom. A single app that crashes while the rest of the phone works needs a different path from a device that freezes across the home screen, Settings, and several apps.

| What you observe | Most useful branch | First low-risk action | Diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|---|
| One app crashes, will not open, or stops responding | App-level troubleshooting | Restart, then update Android and that app | Separates an app defect from a temporary system state |
| Several apps, the home screen, or Settings freeze | Device-level troubleshooting | Check free storage and system updates | Shows whether a broad resource or operating-system issue is involved |
| The phone restarts or crashes repeatedly | Device-level troubleshooting plus safe mode | Check storage and test without downloaded apps | Safe mode can reveal whether a downloaded app is involved |
| Online features fail but offline features work | Connectivity troubleshooting | Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data | Distinguishes a connection problem from an individual app problem |
| The phone will not charge or turn on | Power and startup troubleshooting | Check the outlet, charger, cable, and port | Prevents treating a power or display fault as a software fault |
Google’s official app and device guides use labels such as “Crashing,” “Won’t open,” “Won’t respond,” “Freezes,” “Stops responding,” and “Restarts constantly.” Menu names and safe-mode procedures vary by manufacturer and Android version, so treat the paths below as common examples rather than universal wording.

- Record the symptom. Note the app name, Android version if known, what you were doing, the exact error message, and whether the issue occurs on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both.
- Save urgent work. If the phone is still usable, sync photos and documents and confirm that important contacts and messages have a current backup.
- Keep account credentials available. A reset or reinstall may require the Google Account, screen-lock code, and passwords for apps with their own accounts.
- Prefer reversible actions first. Restarting, updating, and checking storage do not intentionally remove personal files. Clearing app data and factory-resetting do.
Repair one app that crashes or will not open
Use this sequence when other apps work normally. Google recommends restarting after each step so you can tell which change affected the result. The complete official sequence is in Google’s guide to fixing an installed Android app.

1. Restart the phone
Hold the power button and choose Restart, or use your device’s equivalent control. Open the problem app again after the phone has fully started. A restart clears a temporary process failure; it does not remove the app’s saved data.
2. Install Android and app updates
- Open Settings and look for System, Software update, or a similarly named option. Install any offered Android update and restart.
- Open Google Play Store, open your account menu, choose Manage apps and device, and install available updates. Manufacturers may use different labels.
- Try the app again before moving to the next step.
An app built for an older release can fail after a system change, while a pending system update can contain a fix. An update is not proof that the app is defective; it is a controlled way to bring the software to a supported state.
3. Force stop the affected app
Open Settings, choose Apps or Apps & notifications, select the affected app, and tap Force stop. Confirm, then launch the app. This closes a stuck process without deleting its stored information.

4. Clear the cache
On the same app-information screen, choose Storage & cache (the wording varies) and tap Clear cache. Cached files are temporary; clearing them may free space and remove a corrupted temporary file, but it is not a permanent cure. Cached data can build up again as you use the app.

5. Clear app data only when you accept the consequence
If the app still fails, the storage screen may offer Clear storage or Clear data. This returns the app to an initial state and can erase information held locally, including settings, downloaded content, or an account session. Check the app’s own backup or sync options first, and make sure you know how to sign in again. Do not use this step merely to reclaim a small amount of storage.
6. Uninstall and reinstall
Uninstall the app from its Play Store page or from Settings, restart, and install it again from the official store. Reinstallation replaces the program files, but it will not guarantee recovery of data that existed only on the device and was removed during uninstall or data clearing. If the app is preinstalled and cannot be uninstalled, use its available Uninstall updates or Disable controls only when your device provides them, then update it again through the normal channel.
7. Escalate the remaining single-app problem
If the same app is still the only failure after these steps, contact that app’s developer with the app version, Android version, device model, exact error, and steps that reproduce it. If the failing software is a Google app or a Google Play update itself, use Google Play support rather than repeatedly resetting the phone. A developer can identify an app-specific service outage or compatibility defect that device-wide troubleshooting cannot fix.
When the phone freezes, restarts, or runs slowly
For a whole-device symptom, begin with storage and updates, then use safe mode to isolate downloaded apps. Google’s device guidance is available for freezes and non-responsive phones and for phones that restart or crash.

Check available storage
Open Settings and search for Storage. Remove or move items you no longer need, such as large videos, offline downloads, and unused apps, while preserving anything that is not backed up. Google states: “Your phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.” Treat that as Google’s troubleshooting threshold, not as a universal engineering law for every model. After freeing space, restart and observe whether the symptom returns.
Install system and security updates
Use the software-update control in Settings and install updates while connected to power and a reliable network. Then update apps through Google Play. If the phone cannot stay on long enough to update, continue to safe mode or manufacturer support rather than repeatedly attempting the same update.
Test in safe mode
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. It is a diagnostic test, not a repair. The exact entry method is manufacturer-specific; common devices show the power menu, then require touching and holding Power off until a safe-mode prompt appears. Other models use a button combination during startup. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model; Google documents the purpose and interpretation in its safe-mode guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOnce the phone starts in safe mode, use it long enough to reproduce the freeze, restart, or slowdown. Downloaded apps are unavailable or marked as disabled, while the core system remains available.

Interpret the safe-mode result
- The problem disappears: a downloaded app is likely involved. Restart normally, then remove recently installed or recently updated apps one at a time. Restart and test after each removal. Removing several apps at once hides which one caused the change.
- The problem remains: a downloaded app is less likely to be the cause. Check storage again, verify updates, and contact the device manufacturer or an authorized support channel for model-specific diagnostics.
- You cannot exit safe mode: restart normally and check for a persistent on-screen safe-mode indicator. If it returns after every restart, use the manufacturer’s support instructions; avoid deleting data merely to remove the indicator.
Watch for patterns before escalating
Note whether the failure follows a particular app, location, accessory, temperature, or network. A restart that happens only when one app opens points toward that app; a restart during charging or with a damaged port belongs in power or hardware support. These observations give a support technician a reproducible lead without requiring you to install an unverified diagnostic app.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Factory reset: the last resort, not the first fix
A factory reset removes the phone’s data and installed apps. Use it only after reversible troubleshooting and safe-mode isolation, and only when the remaining benefit justifies rebuilding the device.
Back up and verify before resetting
- Run the phone’s backup control and confirm that the latest backup completed.
- Export or sync photos, documents, recordings, authenticator codes, and chat histories that use separate backup systems.
- Check that contacts and calendars appear in the relevant account when viewed from another device or the provider’s website.
- Make sure you know the Google Account and screen-lock credentials that may be requested after the reset.
- Keep the phone charged and record any information you will need to restore the device, such as eSIM or carrier setup details.
Google warns that restoring from a Google Account does not reinstall every app or restore all app-associated data. A backup can therefore reduce loss without guaranteeing a perfect copy of the previous setup.
Perform the reset through Settings when possible
- Open Settings and search for Reset or Erase all data. The control is commonly under System and then Reset options, but the path differs by manufacturer.
- Read the confirmation screen, including the account and data warnings, and start the reset only after verifying the backup.
- During setup, install system updates first, restore only essential data, and test the phone before reinstalling every app. If the problem returns immediately after a clean setup, stop adding apps and contact the manufacturer.
For reset-specific warnings and restoration limits, consult Google’s freeze troubleshooting guidance and its restart and crash guidance.

When the apparent software issue is actually connectivity
If one app cannot load online content, first determine whether other internet services fail. Restart the phone, then compare the same task on Wi-Fi and mobile data. If it works on one connection but not the other, troubleshoot the failing network rather than clearing the app’s data.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and test using mobile data, then reverse the test.
- Move closer to the router or test a different Wi-Fi network if available.
- Toggle Airplane mode briefly, reconnect, and retry.
- Restart the router when every device on that network is affected.
- Check whether a VPN, private DNS setting, captive portal, or data-saver restriction affects the app.
For the full sequence, use Google’s Android internet-connection guide. A network failure can make an otherwise healthy app appear to crash or hang while it waits for a response.
When the phone will not charge or turn on
A dead battery, damaged cable, blocked port, or display fault can look like a software failure. Follow Google’s separate charging and startup troubleshooting before attempting a reset.

- Try a known-good wall outlet, compatible adapter, and cable.
- Inspect the charging port for visible debris or damage; do not force a connector or insert metal objects.
- Leave the phone connected for a while, then try the manufacturer’s normal power-button procedure.
- Remove accessories and cases that may prevent a firm connection.
- Call the phone from another device. If it rings while the display remains blank, the screen may be faulty and requires an authorized repair channel.
Do not buy a diagnostic app or replacement hardware merely because an app previously crashed. Power symptoms need their own branch and evidence.
Choose the next step by risk and information gained
| Action | Reversible? | Data-loss risk | What it can tell you | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart | Yes | None intended | Whether a temporary process or memory state caused the symptom | First step for almost any software symptom |
| Update Android and apps | Usually | Low, but review prompts | Whether a known compatibility or security fix resolves it | After restarting |
| Check storage | Yes | Only for files you choose to remove | Whether critically low free space is contributing | For slow, frozen, or repeatedly restarting phones |
| Force stop | Yes | Usually none | Whether the app process was stuck | When one app fails |
| Clear cache | Mostly | Low; temporary files are removed | Whether damaged cached files are involved | After force stop and updates |
| Safe mode | Yes | None intended | Whether downloaded apps are likely contributors | For device-wide freezes, restarts, or slowdowns |
| Clear app data | No simple undo | App-local data may be erased | Whether a corrupt app profile is involved | Only after confirming backup and sign-in details |
| Factory reset | No | Phone data and apps are removed | Whether a clean system setup changes the device-wide symptom | Last resort, after backup and support guidance |
What to provide when you need support
Support is more effective when you can state the scope and the tests already completed. Provide the device model, Android version, app name and version, available storage, exact error text, time the problem began, recent updates or installations, whether safe mode changes it, and whether Wi-Fi and mobile data behave differently. Include screenshots only if they contain no private information.
Use the app developer for a problem isolated to that app, Google Play support for Google Play or Google-app update failures, and the device manufacturer for a problem that persists across apps or in safe mode. If charging, startup, or a blank display is involved, use an authorized repair route rather than treating it as ordinary app troubleshooting.
