It is not a universal winner: the fastest or most compatible option depends on your phone’s chipset, graphics driver, the specific PS2 game and the emulator build.
ARMSX2 is the actively released alternative to test when you want a newer development path. Play! is the distinct choice if you want built-in high-level BIOS emulation and an official per-game compatibility tracker. AetherSX2 itself is legacy software: development stopped and the app was removed from Google Play, so it should not be treated as a current project.

Quick comparison
| Emulator | What is established | Best reason to try it | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| NetherSX2 | A continuation based on AetherSX2 4248, with Classic and patched variants documented by its project repository. | A practical starting point for the AetherSX2-derived ecosystem. | The project says the preferred variant depends on the game and device; there is no universal speed winner. |
| ARMSX2 | An Android-capable PS2 emulator with active releases and an implementation that is still evolving. | Current development and another compatibility path to test. | Performance and compatibility can change as the project develops. |
| Play! | Supports Android, publishes an official Compatibility Tracker and uses built-in high-level BIOS emulation. | Avoiding external BIOS setup or checking a title-specific compatibility record. | Do not assume that support for Android means every PS2 game is playable. |
| AetherSX2 | The historical project on which NetherSX2 is based; development ceased and the app was removed from Google Play. | Understanding the lineage of existing guides and save files. | It is not an actively maintained or officially updated Android emulator. |
These projects do not have a reliable, directly comparable percentage of the PS2 library that works. The meaningful comparison is your exact game on your exact phone, using the build and graphics settings you actually plan to use.
Which PS2 emulator works best on Android?
Choose NetherSX2 as the first test
NetherSX2 is the sensible first stop if you want the established AetherSX2-derived interface and configuration model. Its repository describes it as a continuation based on AetherSX2 4248 and documents two paths: a Classic build and a patched build. The project materials present those as different trade-offs rather than declaring one universally superior.

- MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
- HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
Use the build recommended by the project’s current documentation for your handset and the games you care about. If one variant has a rendering problem, a regression or a game-specific fault, testing the other is more useful than assuming your phone is too slow. NetherSX2 does not bundle a PS2 BIOS or commercial game files; you must provide your own legally obtained copies.
Try ARMSX2 when current development matters
ARMSX2 is an Android-capable project with active releases. Its emulation approach and performance remain under development, so it is best viewed as a living alternative rather than a guaranteed replacement for NetherSX2.
It is particularly worth testing when a title behaves badly in the AetherSX2-derived path, when you want to follow a newer release cadence, or when the project documentation lists a fix relevant to your game. Compare it on the same phone, with the same game image and equivalent graphics settings; otherwise a result that looks like an emulator advantage may simply be a settings difference.

Pick Play! for built-in BIOS emulation and a tracker
Play! has two unusual advantages in this comparison. It supports Android and maintains an official Compatibility Tracker, allowing you to look up an individual title instead of inferring compatibility from the console library as a whole. Its documentation states: “Play! uses a built-in high-level emulation BIOS. Using an external BIOS file is not necessary or possible.”
That simplifies first-time setup and avoids handling a separate BIOS file. It does not remove the need for legally obtained game software, nor does it guarantee smooth performance on a particular phone. Check the tracker entry for the exact game and test it locally.

Use AetherSX2 only as historical context
AetherSX2 established the code path that NetherSX2 continues, but it is no longer a current distribution target. Android Authority reported that development stopped and that the application was later removed from Google Play. Archived advice about installing it through Google Play, device support or recommended settings describes that earlier period and should not be treated as current installation guidance.
NetherSX2 is a community continuation, not an official AetherSX2 update. Avoid arbitrary APK mirror sites that present old or modified packages as current releases; use each project’s verifiable repository or official release channel instead.
Will your phone run PS2 games?
There is no single processor cutoff that predicts every result. Emulation load varies sharply by game, scene, graphics effects, driver and chosen resolution. Android Authority’s historical AetherSX2 guidance recommended a Snapdragon 845-level processor with four large CPU cores (Cortex-A75 or newer). That is useful historical context, not a universal minimum for NetherSX2, ARMSX2 or Play! in 2026.
The same guide observed an advantage for Adreno graphics in its AetherSX2 testing and suggested trying Vulkan on Mali GPUs, while noting that some games behaved better with OpenGL. Treat those observations as AetherSX2-era tendencies, not promises for every current driver or emulator.
What the historical device tests show
Android Authority tested AetherSX2 on multiple phones and several demanding titles. Two 2022 flagship phones delivered playable results across the reported test set, while an older flagship struggled with Burnout 3 at default settings. The games named in that report were:

This was a publisher’s historical test report, not a controlled comparison of today’s emulators. It demonstrates why a phone can run one title acceptably and fail to sustain speed in another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the limits that matter on your phone
- Chipset and CPU: sustained emulation depends on the phone’s big CPU cores as well as its advertised peak speed.
- GPU and driver: Adreno and Mali devices can respond differently to Vulkan and OpenGL.
- Thermals: a phone may start smoothly and slow after it heats up.
- Game workload: racing, open-world, effects-heavy and large 3D scenes are often more demanding than simpler 2D or arena sections.
- Settings: resolution increases and enhancement features add work before the game itself is considered.
BIOS and game files: what each emulator requires
NetherSX2 and the AetherSX2-derived path
NetherSX2’s project instructions say it does not include BIOS files or game ROMs. Supply a BIOS dumped from hardware you own and game files obtained through lawful means. The emulator cannot make unauthorized downloads legal, and a random BIOS from a mirror can also be damaged or mismatched.
Play!
Play!’s built-in high-level BIOS means an external BIOS file is neither necessary nor possible according to its documentation. You still need your own legally obtained game software, and the title must be compatible with the emulator’s current implementation.
Why BIOS advice differs
A BIOS is console firmware. The AetherSX2-derived projects emulate the console around a user-provided firmware image, while Play! implements a high-level BIOS internally. The difference changes setup, not your responsibility to use lawful game material. Never follow a setup guide that sends you to unauthorized firmware or ROM downloads.
How to set up an emulator safely
Exact menu labels can change between releases, so use the instructions shipped with the project you install. The following workflow keeps the important decisions in the right order.

It helps you gain dominant position of games faster and the performance and game experience has been improved qualitatively
- Identify your test game. Start with one or two titles you actually intend to play. Search Play!’s official Compatibility Tracker when using Play!, and read the current issue or release notes for the other projects.
- Choose an official distribution channel. Use the project’s own repository or release page. Do not substitute an APK mirror for a verifiable source, particularly for an archived application such as AetherSX2.
- Check the phone before importing files. Confirm that Android is 64-bit where required by the historical AetherSX2-era guidance, that you have free storage and that the phone is not already thermally throttling.
- Prepare lawful files. For NetherSX2, place your personally dumped BIOS and game image where the Android file picker can reach them. For Play!, skip the external BIOS step because its internal implementation does not accept one.
- Complete the first-run file selection. Grant only the storage access the app requests, select the BIOS location when the AetherSX2-derived app asks for it, then add your game directory through the app’s file browser. Play! should proceed without an external BIOS selection.
- Run a repeatable test. Use the same save state or the same opening section for several minutes. Watch for audio crackle, uneven frame pacing, missing effects, crashes and heat-related slowdowns rather than judging only the first menu.
- Change one variable at a time. Test the other NetherSX2 variant, switch Vulkan and OpenGL, or reduce the internal resolution, then repeat the same scene. Record which change helped.
- Keep the working profile. Per-game settings are safer than one global configuration because a setting that fixes one title can break another.
Graphics settings and troubleshooting
The game is slow from the first scene
- Try the other graphics API. Vulkan was suggested for Mali in historical AetherSX2 guidance, but some games performed better with OpenGL.
- Reduce internal resolution or turn off enhancements before lowering unrelated Android settings.
- Test the other NetherSX2 build if you are on that emulator.
- Check whether the title is listed with limitations in Play!’s official tracker.
The game starts well, then slows down
- Let the phone cool and remove a thick case during testing if it traps heat.
- Repeat the same section after a short pause to distinguish thermal throttling from a game-specific bottleneck.
- Use a lower graphics workload and avoid judging sustained play from a brief menu sequence.
Graphics are missing or corrupted
- Switch between Vulkan and OpenGL and retest the exact scene.
- Disable optional enhancements and return to a conservative resolution.
- Check the emulator project’s current issue tracker or release notes for your title before assuming the phone is incompatible.
Audio crackles while speed looks acceptable
Audio glitches can indicate uneven frame pacing even when an on-screen counter appears high. Repeat the scene with a lower resolution, a different graphics API and fewer enhancements. Keep the change that produces stable pacing, not merely the highest reported number.
The app cannot see the BIOS or game
- Confirm that the file is stored locally and that Android’s file picker permission was completed.
- Check that you are using the emulator’s expected file type and directory selection process.
- Do not download a replacement BIOS from an unverified site. For Play!, remove the external BIOS step entirely because the project says one is not needed or supported.
How to compare emulators fairly
A useful comparison controls the variables that usually make online claims misleading.
- Use one phone, fully charged or connected to the same power source for every test.
- Use the same legally obtained game image and the same save location.
- Start from the same scene, not from different menus or levels.
- Keep resolution, frame pacing options and enhancement settings equivalent.
- Test long enough to expose heat-related slowdown.
- Write down the build, graphics API, device temperature impression, visual faults, audio behavior and whether the game crashed.
Do not rank raw speed from different phones. A faster-looking result can come from a newer chipset, a cooler handset or a lower resolution rather than a better emulator.
Controllers and playability
Touch controls can work for menus and slower games, but a physical controller is optional rather than a requirement. The AetherSX2-era app supported Bluetooth and USB-C gamepads, and Android Authority recommended a physical pad for fast action, racing and platform games.
If you buy or borrow a controller, check Bluetooth or USB-C compatibility, phone fit, port placement and case clearance before assuming it will work. A controller cannot fix emulation slowdown, but it can make a game that already runs smoothly substantially easier to play.

What to expect from project updates
Android emulation changes quickly because emulator builds, graphics drivers and game-specific fixes change independently. ARMSX2’s active release path may bring improvements or regressions; NetherSX2’s variant guidance can change as patches evolve; Play!’s tracker can change as compatibility work lands. Recheck official release information and the exact game listing before replacing a working setup.
The safest long-term approach is to keep a known-good build and per-game settings documented, then test a new release separately. If the update introduces a regression, you have a reproducible configuration to return to instead of guessing which setting changed.
Bottom line for your phone
Start with NetherSX2 if you want the mature AetherSX2-derived workflow, and test its Classic or patched path according to the project’s device-and-game guidance. Try ARMSX2 when active development or a title-specific problem makes another implementation worthwhile. Choose Play! when built-in BIOS emulation and an official compatibility tracker are more important than following the AetherSX2 lineage. Treat AetherSX2 as legacy software, not the current answer.
