The safest way to buy an Android phone that will stay secure is to check the exact model’s published security-support end date, the date its support clock starts, its patch cadence, and the number of Android upgrades promised. A brand-wide reputation is not enough: two phones from the same manufacturer can have different lifespans, while a new-in-box older phone may already have used several years of support.
Why security-support length should be a buying requirement
Security updates fix vulnerabilities in Android, the phone’s drivers and bundled components. When official patches stop, newly discovered flaws may remain uncorrected even if the phone still works and can run existing apps. The practical question is not simply “How many years does this brand support phones?” It is “How much official security support remains for this exact model and regional variant when I buy it?”

Support duration also affects resale value, business use and the cost of replacing a phone early. A handset that receives patches for longer can remain suitable for banking, work accounts and password managers without relying on unofficial software. Long support does not guarantee that every patch arrives on the same day worldwide, however; manufacturers publish cadence categories and delivery can vary by model, country, carrier and supplier.
The six checks to make before paying
1. Identify the exact model and variant
Write down the complete model name, generation, storage version if it changes the software package, and the regional or carrier variant. “Pixel 9,” “Galaxy S-series” or “Fairphone” is too broad for a support decision. The manufacturer’s support page should name the model or a clearly defined eligible group.

Retail listings can mix generations, refurbished units and imported variants under one headline. Match the model number on the listing or box with the manufacturer’s eligibility list. If a carrier sells a customized variant, check the carrier’s update policy as well as the manufacturer’s policy.
2. Find when the support clock starts
A promise can be measured from launch, first sale, first availability in a particular store or another stated date. Google’s Pixel policy counts the period from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the United States. That means an older phone sold as “new” may have less remaining support than a buyer expects from its advertised number of years.
Record both the clock-start date and the final expected security-update date. To estimate remaining support, subtract today’s date from the published end date; do not subtract from the date you personally activated the phone unless the policy explicitly uses activation. If the seller cannot establish when the unit first entered the market, treat the remaining term as uncertain and favor a model with a substantial margin beyond your intended ownership period.

3. Separate security patches from Android upgrades
Security updates and major Android-version upgrades are related but different commitments. A phone may receive security fixes after it stops moving to a new Android version, or it may receive several Android upgrades while the security term is shorter. Ask for three separate figures:
- the final date for security updates;
- the number of major Android upgrades included; and
- the end date for those Android upgrades, if it is stated separately.
Fairphone’s published timelines illustrate why this distinction matters: they list Android-upgrade counts separately from the security-support period. Do not turn a phrase such as “seven years of support” into an assumption that seven new Android versions are included.
4. Check the patch cadence
Cadence tells you how often a model is scheduled for security maintenance, not the exact day every patch will arrive. Samsung identifies eligible models for monthly or quarterly updates. Fairphone describes monthly and bi-monthly periods for different generations. A quarterly category can still represent an official commitment, but it leaves a longer interval between planned releases than a monthly category.

Cadence can change during a product’s life, and a supplier component may be included in a later release. Use the published category to compare models, while treating it as a schedule class rather than a guarantee of identical delivery dates in every country.

Update timing can differ by country, model and carrier. OnePlus explicitly warns that delivery timing may vary by country or model and that some supplier patches can arrive in a subsequent release. Google’s Pixel clock is based on US Google Store availability, so buyers elsewhere should confirm how that policy applies to their variant and sales channel.
Before ordering an imported phone, confirm that the exact regional model is supported by the manufacturer’s local software channel, has the required network bands and is eligible for updates in your country. A long global headline is less useful if the local variant is excluded or updates are delayed by a carrier approval process.
6. For a used phone, inspect its current patch level
A used handset can already be close to the end of its official period. On a Pixel, open Settings, choose System, then Software update to view available updates; Google also exposes the Android version and security-update level in Settings. Menu names differ on other manufacturers, so use that maker’s current instructions.
Record the displayed security-update month and Android version, then compare them with the manufacturer’s support page. A seller who cannot show the phone’s current patch level, model number or update status should be treated as a higher-risk purchase. Do not confuse a recently reset phone with a recently updated phone: a factory reset erases personal data but does not extend the support clock.
How the main long-support policies differ
| Manufacturer or range | Published security-support commitment | Android-upgrade information | Cadence or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later cohort | Seven years of operating-system and security updates from first availability on the US Google Store | Seven years of OS updates are included in the stated term | Apply the policy only to the exact models listed in Google’s current support page |
| Earlier Google Pixel cohorts | Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families and the original Pixel Fold are in a five-year cohort; Pixel 5a and older no longer receive Android-version or security updates | Term differs from the Pixel 8-and-later policy | Do not generalize the newer seven-year promise backward |
| Samsung Galaxy eligible models | Samsung states support of up to seven years for eligible devices | Upgrade details depend on the model’s listing | Samsung’s scope page separates monthly and quarterly update groups; “up to” does not mean every Galaxy phone gets seven years |
| Fairphone Gen. 6 | Six years of Android upgrades plus one additional year of security-only support, seven years total | Six Android-upgrade years | Check the generation and the exact product page |
| Fairphone Gen. 6+ | Published as a distinct six-year Android-upgrade and seven-year overall-support commitment | Six Android-upgrade years | Do not substitute Gen. 6 terms without confirming the model |
| Fairphone 5 | At least eight years of security updates, with a goal of ten years | Five Android-version upgrades | Monthly patches for about three years, then bi-monthly; the ten-year figure is a goal rather than the minimum commitment |
| Fairphone 4 | Guaranteed support until at least 2028, five years from its September 2021 launch | Check the current roadmap for upgrade details | Remaining time depends on the purchase date |
| Fairphone 3 and 3+ | Support ended in August 2026; the final patch was issued in June 2026 | No continuing official security term | Avoid if you require current manufacturer patches |
| OnePlus smartphones and tablets | Minimum three years of security updates after launch | Upgrade count is model-specific | OnePlus says timing may vary by country or model and supplier patches may appear in a subsequent release |
Google Pixel: read the cohort, not just the headline
Google’s current Pixel support policy gives Pixel 8 and later seven years of operating-system and security updates, counted from first availability on the Google Store in the United States. The listed cohort includes Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, Pixel 9a and Pixel 9 Pro and Fold variants, Pixel 10 models and Pixel 11 models. The policy is model-based, so verify that the phone you are considering appears on the current list.

Older Pixels follow shorter terms. Google places the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families and the original Pixel Fold in a five-year cohort. Pixel 5a and earlier generations are identified as no longer receiving Android-version or security updates. A discounted older Pixel can therefore be a poor value if its remaining official support does not cover the period you plan to keep it.
Google announced the seven-year commitment for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro on October 4, 2023, describing the term as including the latest Android operating system, security updates and ongoing Feature Drops. Feature Drops are an additional software benefit; they should not be counted as a substitute for the security-update end date.
Samsung Galaxy: “up to seven years” requires model-level checking
Samsung’s Mobile Security policy says that, as of January 2024, support had been extended to “up to 7 years.” The useful buying information is the scope list showing which Galaxy models qualify and whether each model is assigned monthly or quarterly updates.
“Up to” is a ceiling, not a universal promise. It does not establish that every Galaxy device receives seven years or that every model is on the monthly schedule. Open the current security-scope page, find the exact model, and record its category before comparing it with another phone. If the model is absent from the list, ask Samsung or the carrier for a written support date rather than inferring one from the series name or launch price.
Fairphone: detailed roadmaps, different generations
Fairphone Gen. 6 and Gen. 6+
Fairphone’s support article updated August 26, 2026 describes Gen. 6 as receiving six years of Android upgrades followed by one additional year of security-only support, for seven years overall. Gen. 6+ has its own six-year Android-upgrade and seven-year overall-support statement. Check the retailer’s generation label carefully because similar names can hide different terms.
Fairphone 5
The Fairphone 5 roadmap states five Android-version upgrades and at least eight years of security updates, with a goal of ten years. It describes monthly patches for about the first three years and bi-monthly patches afterward. The eight-year figure is the minimum stated security period; ten years is an objective, not the same kind of guaranteed end date.

Fairphone 4, 3 and 3+
Fairphone 4 is guaranteed support until at least 2028, which is five years from its September 2021 launch. The remaining term therefore shrinks as the calendar advances. Fairphone 3 and 3+ support ended in August 2026, with the final patch released in June 2026. Those models should not be presented as long-support purchases merely because they are repairable or inexpensive.

OnePlus’s UK Product Security Update Period page pledges a minimum of three years of security updates after launch for smartphones and tablets. That baseline is useful for eliminating models with very short support, but it is not a complete forecast for every current device. OnePlus notes that actual delivery can vary by country or model and that a supplier patch may arrive in a subsequent release.
For a newer OnePlus phone, look for a named support period and end date for that exact model. If only the three-year baseline is available, calculate whether three years from launch covers your planned ownership and add a buffer for resale or delayed delivery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison method
When two phones look similar, compare them in this order:
- Remaining security-support time: use the published end date minus your purchase date, not the number printed in a headline.
- Android-upgrade count: record how many major versions are promised and whether that promise ends before security support.
- Cadence: distinguish monthly, quarterly and bi-monthly categories, while allowing for regional delivery differences.
- Variant and carrier eligibility: confirm that both phones are supported in the country and sales channel where you will use them.
- Condition and current patch: for used phones, inspect the displayed security-update level and reject units already outside official support.
Prefer a phone whose published security term extends beyond your intended ownership period. If you plan to keep a handset four years, a model with only three years from launch is already a mismatch, even if its purchase price is attractive.

Assuming the newest brand policy applies to every phone
Manufacturers frequently improve support for newer generations while older models retain their original terms. Pixel 8-and-later seven-year support does not rewrite the five-year Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 policy. Samsung’s “up to seven years” does not make every Galaxy model a seven-year device.

Counting from the day you open the box
Most published periods are tied to launch or first availability, not activation. Ask when the support clock began and use that date in your calculation. Warehouse stock, imported phones and used devices can have materially less time remaining.
Treating Android upgrades as security support
A phone can stop receiving major Android releases while still receiving security patches, or stop receiving both at the same time. Record the two commitments separately so an attractive upgrade count does not hide a short security term.
Confusing cadence with guaranteed delivery dates
Monthly, quarterly and bi-monthly labels describe planned categories. They do not prove that every country receives every patch on the same date. Carrier testing, regional software builds and supplier fixes can change timing.

Buying a discontinued model because it is inexpensive
Check the current patch level and end date before treating a clearance or refurbished price as a bargain. Fairphone 3 and 3+ support ended in August 2026, for example, despite those phones remaining functional.
Questions to document on your shortlist
- What is the exact model number and regional variant?
- What date starts its official support period?
- What is the last expected security-update date?
- How many major Android upgrades are promised, and until when?
- Is the model listed for monthly, quarterly or bi-monthly security maintenance?
- Are there carrier, country or supplier-delivery qualifications?
- If the phone is used, what Android version and security-update month does Settings show?
Keep the manufacturer’s support-page wording and the date you checked it with your purchase records. Policies can be updated, and a saved model-specific reference is more reliable than a retailer’s generic “long-term updates” badge.
Bottom line for a long-term Android purchase
Choose by remaining official security support, not by brand alone. Verify the exact model, support-clock start date, security end date, Android-upgrade count, cadence and regional eligibility. Google’s Pixel 8-and-later cohort offers a clearly stated seven-year term; Samsung provides model-specific coverage of up to seven years; Fairphone publishes generation-by-generation timelines that can reach eight years minimum for security on Fairphone 5; and OnePlus provides a three-year minimum baseline. Those figures are meaningful only after you confirm the phone’s exact variant and how much of the term remains when you buy.
