Android Notification Management: History, Permissions, Bubbles and Lock-Screen Privacy

Android gives you several separate controls for notifications: Notification history can show recently dismissed alerts on supported phones, App notifications can block or fine-tune an app, conversation bubbles change how messages appear, and lock-screen settings control how much text is exposed. The exact menu names depend on your Android version and the manufacturer’s interface, so use the paths below as a guide and look for equivalent wording on your phone.

What each Android notification control actually changes

Notification settings are not one master switch. Android applies controls at different scopes, and understanding that scope prevents common mistakes such as turning off an entire app when only one type of alert is unwanted.

Control Scope What it changes Typical availability
Notification history Device history Shows supported-device records of recent, snoozed and dismissed notifications Optional; some devices do not provide it
App notifications App Allows or blocks notifications from one app Available on current Android versions, with menu wording varying by manufacturer
Notification category App category Controls a particular channel, such as direct messages, promotions or playback Only when the app defines categories
Alerting or silent Notification or category Controls sound, vibration, lock-screen appearance and status-bar behavior Available on supported Android notification interfaces
Bubble Conversation Controls whether a conversation appears as a floating bubble Conversation apps and conversations that support bubbles
Lock-screen privacy Device display Shows all notification details, hides sensitive text or hides notifications entirely Available, but labels and choices differ by device
Do Not Disturb and Modes Time, situation or schedule Temporarily filters interruptions without permanently changing app permission Some Mode features require Android 14 or later

A notification can therefore be allowed by its app, set to silent, hidden on the lock screen and excluded by a current Mode at the same time. Those settings affect different parts of the experience.

How to find notifications you accidentally dismissed

Use Notification history

On a phone that supports the feature, open Settings > Notifications > Notification history. Google describes the page as a place to view snoozed notifications, recently dismissed notifications and a history of the day’s notifications.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap Notification history.
  4. In Last 24 hours, tap a listed notification to inspect it. In Recently dismissed, touch and hold an entry to manage the notification or its app settings.

The history page is useful for identifying which app sent an alert and for reopening the relevant control. It is not a guaranteed archive of every notification ever received. Google explicitly notes that some devices may not have notification history and that settings can vary slightly among devices. If the page is absent, your phone’s Android build or manufacturer software may not implement it.

Understand the enablement limit

Do not assume that turning on Notification history will reconstruct alerts dismissed before the feature was enabled. The official behavior covers the supported-device history that Android records; it does not promise recovery of an earlier, unrecorded backlog. If you need the feature, enable it before you need to investigate a future dismissal.

If the menu is missing

  • Use Settings search for notification history.
  • Check Settings > Notifications for an overflow menu or an advanced-notifications section.
  • Confirm the Android version and manufacturer interface, because a Pixel, Galaxy, OnePlus or Motorola phone may place the control in a different submenu.
  • If no result appears, the device may simply not support the feature.

How to stop one app from sending notifications

Block or allow the entire app

Go to Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select the app, then turn its notifications on or off. This is the broadest app-level control: disabling it prevents that app’s notifications from appearing through the normal notification system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can reach the same controls from a live alert. Touch and hold the notification, tap Settings, and adjust the app’s notification controls. This route is often faster because Android opens the settings for the app that actually generated the alert.

Change only a category

Many apps expose notification categories (also called channels). Examples can include direct messages, group activity, marketing, delivery updates or media playback. Open the app under App notifications and change the individual category instead of switching off the whole app.

  • Use a category switch when one kind of alert is unwanted but other alerts remain useful.
  • Set a category to silent when you still want it in the notification shade without sound or vibration.
  • If no categories appear, the app may not expose separate controls; Android cannot create categories that the app has not defined.

Category names and available options are controlled partly by the app, so two apps can present different lists even on the same phone.

Alerting versus silent notifications

Android’s practical distinction is straightforward:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Alerting: the notification can make a sound, appear on the lock screen and show the app icon in the status bar.
  • Silent: it does not make a sound or vibrate, but remains visible when you open the notification shade.

Choose silent for low-priority updates that you still want to review. Choose blocking when you do not want the notification stored or displayed at all. A silent notification is not deleted; it is simply less interruptive.

Do Not Disturb and other Modes add a temporary filtering layer. A notification can remain permitted and alerting in its normal settings while a current Mode suppresses its interruption.

How notification bubbles work

Turn on a bubble for one conversation

When a supported conversation arrives, touch and hold its notification and choose Bubble conversation. Android then presents that conversation as a floating bubble rather than only as a conventional shade entry.

Stop an existing bubble

  1. Open the bubble.
  2. Tap Manage.
  3. Choose Don’t bubble conversation.

This changes the presentation of that conversation. It does not necessarily revoke the underlying app notification permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the app’s bubble policy

Android can offer three levels of bubble behavior for an app: all conversations can bubble, only selected conversations can bubble, or no conversations can bubble. Select the level that matches how you use the app. Conversation-level choices are more precise than disabling all notifications from the app.

A dismissed bubble can return when a new message arrives. Dismissing the floating icon is therefore not the same as choosing Don’t bubble conversation or blocking the app.

Hide message previews on the lock screen

Choose one of three privacy levels

Look for Notifications on lock screen in Settings; the exact path and wording vary. Android commonly provides these practical choices:

Lock-screen choice What someone viewing the locked phone sees When to use it
Show notifications Alerts and their available details, including message text where permitted Convenient when the lock screen is private
Hide sensitive content The existence of an alert is visible, but private text and details are concealed Useful in shared spaces while retaining awareness that something arrived
Show no notifications No lock-screen notification alerts are shown Best when even the fact that an alert arrived is private

Use the sensitive-content switch

On many devices, open the lock-screen notification settings and adjust Show sensitive content. Turning it off hides message details while preserving a generic notification indicator. Pixel documentation uses this same sensitive-content concept, although other manufacturers may place the switch under a different heading.

Lock-screen visibility is independent of whether an app is allowed to notify you. Hiding a preview does not stop the notification from arriving, and blocking an app does not automatically configure the privacy level for other apps.

Audit notification-related privacy with Privacy Dashboard

Privacy Dashboard is separate from Notification history. It reports access to protected permissions rather than listing dismissed notifications.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy, or Security and privacy on interfaces that combine those sections.
  3. Tap Privacy dashboard.
  4. Select a permission to see which apps used it and when, then tap an app to update its access.

Google documents different activity windows by Android version: Android 12 shows the last 24 hours, while Android 13 shows the last seven days. The dashboard can help you investigate an app’s access to permissions such as the microphone, camera or location; it is not a record of every notification event.

Use Do Not Disturb and Modes for temporary control

Open the interruption filters

Go to Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb, or open Do Not Disturb from Quick Settings. From there, edit which people, apps and alert types can interrupt you and set a schedule when appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a built-in or custom Mode

Bedtime, Driving and custom Modes can apply schedules and notification filters. A Mode is useful when the desired rule depends on time or context—for example, suppressing work alerts overnight—while leaving the underlying app permissions unchanged.

Some Mode setup steps work only on Android 14 and newer. If your phone does not show the same Mode controls, use its available Do Not Disturb options or check the manufacturer’s equivalent scheduling feature.

Work-profile notification privacy

Android Enterprise work profiles can be configured to hide sensitive work-notification details while still showing that a work alert exists. Depending on the Android version and administrator policy, the lock screen may offer choices to show all work content, hide sensitive content or show no work notifications.

If an option is unavailable or cannot be changed, the organization’s device-management policy may control it. Personal notification settings do not necessarily override a work-profile administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why notification settings differ between Android phones

Android is an operating-system family used by many manufacturers. Version differences, manufacturer interfaces, app design and work-profile policies can all change the visible path.

  • Android version: newer releases can add Modes or reorganize privacy controls.
  • Manufacturer interface: Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola, Pixel and other phones may rename sections or move them under advanced settings.
  • App implementation: categories and conversation-bubble support depend on what the app publishes.
  • Managed device policy: an employer can restrict work-profile notification details.
  • Feature availability: Notification history is optional and may not exist on a particular build.

When a path does not match, search Settings for the distinctive term—such as Notification history, App notifications, lock screen notifications or Do Not Disturb—rather than assuming the feature is absent.

Practical troubleshooting checklist

A notification disappeared and history is empty

  • Check whether Notification history exists on the device.
  • Confirm that history was enabled before the notification was dismissed.
  • Look in the app’s notification settings to identify whether the app or a category is currently blocked.
  • Check whether a Mode, Do Not Disturb schedule or work policy filtered the alert.

An app is still making noise

  • Open App notifications and inspect each category, not only the app’s main switch.
  • Change the noisy category from alerting to silent or turn that category off.
  • Review Do Not Disturb exceptions if the sound occurs during a schedule.

A message preview is still visible

  • Reopen Notifications on lock screen and verify that sensitive content is hidden.
  • Check whether the preview is coming from a different app or work profile.
  • Remember that hiding sensitive content leaves a generic alert visible; select no lock-screen notifications if even that indicator must be concealed.

A bubble keeps coming back

  • Open the bubble, tap Manage, and choose Don’t bubble conversation.
  • In the app’s bubble policy, select no conversations or only selected conversations.
  • Expect a dismissed bubble to reappear when a new message arrives unless its conversation policy has been changed.

A simple setup for most people

  1. Enable Notification history if your phone offers it, so future accidental dismissals can be inspected.
  2. Keep important app categories alerting and change low-priority categories to silent.
  3. Turn bubbles on only for conversations that benefit from quick access.
  4. Set lock-screen notifications to hide sensitive content if the phone is viewed around other people.
  5. Use Do Not Disturb or a scheduled Mode for temporary quiet periods instead of permanently disabling useful apps.
  6. Review Privacy Dashboard periodically when you want to audit permission access, remembering that its look-back period depends on Android version.
