Android network reset vs. factory reset: what each one erases

Use a network reset when connectivity is the problem; use a factory reset only when you are prepared to erase the phone. A network reset removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and mobile-network configuration, but keeps installed apps and personal files. A factory reset removes the accounts, apps, settings, and locally stored data on the device and returns it to the initial setup screen.

The labels and menu layout differ between Pixel, Galaxy, Xperia, and other Android phones. Check the wording on your exact model before confirming, especially when a menu offers separate Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile-network resets.

Network reset and factory reset at a glance

Question Network reset Factory reset
Primary purpose Repair Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular-data, APN, or other connectivity configuration Resolve severe software problems, prepare a phone for transfer, or erase the device
Removed Saved network configuration, Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and applicable mobile-network settings; the exact scope depends on the manufacturer and Android version On-device accounts, installed apps, settings, and local user data
Kept Apps, photos, messages, documents, and other personal data Nothing stored locally unless it was backed up and can be restored
What you do afterward Join Wi-Fi networks again and pair Bluetooth accessories again Complete Android setup and restore backups; account verification may be required
Data-loss risk Low: configuration must be entered again, but personal content remains High: local data is erased and cannot be recovered from the phone without a usable backup

These are different operations, not two names for the same troubleshooting step. A network reset changes connection settings. A factory reset wipes the phone’s local environment.

What a network reset deletes

A network reset targets the settings Android uses to connect to networks and nearby accessories. Samsung says you can reset Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile-network settings without erasing apps or data. Afterward, saved networks and paired accessories have to be configured again (Samsung’s support explanation).

Wi-Fi information

Saved Wi-Fi network names and their passwords are removed. The phone will no longer automatically join those networks until you select each network and enter its password again. If a workplace or school network uses certificates, a sign-in portal, or a device-management profile, you may need to complete that organization’s enrollment process again.

Bluetooth pairings

Previously paired headphones, cars, watches, keyboards, and other Bluetooth accessories are forgotten. The accessories themselves are not erased; they simply need to be placed in pairing mode and connected again from the phone’s Bluetooth settings.

Mobile-network configuration

Depending on the phone and software version, a reset can remove cellular-network settings such as carrier configuration or APN values. This can affect mobile data, messaging registration, or tethering until the carrier settings are recreated automatically or entered as instructed by the carrier.

What remains on the phone

A network reset does not uninstall applications or delete photos, videos, messages, contacts, documents, downloads, or other personal files. It also does not sign you out of every account as a factory reset does. The risk is operational rather than destructive: you lose connection settings and must rebuild them.

How to perform a network reset safely

Because Android manufacturers use different names, the most reliable method is to use the Settings search field and search for reset, network reset, or Wi-Fi and Bluetooth reset. Read the confirmation text carefully: some phones show one combined action, while others provide separate actions.

  1. Record information you will need. Make sure you know the passwords for important Wi-Fi networks and have any carrier APN instructions available. Note which Bluetooth accessories you will have to pair again.
  2. Open Settings. Use the Settings search box for “reset” if you cannot find the option in the menus.
  3. Select the connectivity reset. The label may be “Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth,” “Reset network settings,” or separate Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and mobile-network options. Do not choose “Erase all data” or “Factory data reset.”
  4. Review the warning and confirm. Android may ask for your screen lock. The reset normally completes quickly and returns you to the Settings screen.
  5. Restart if the phone requests it, then test Wi-Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth. Rejoin networks and pair accessories one at a time so you can identify any remaining problem.

Samsung notes that menu names and layouts vary by model and software. Sony also notes that from Android 14, mobile-network and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth resets may appear as separate actions. If your phone presents different wording, use the option whose confirmation specifically describes network settings rather than relying on the position of a menu item.

When a network reset is the right choice

  • Wi-Fi repeatedly disconnects while other devices work normally on the same network.
  • The phone refuses to join a network after a password or router change.
  • Bluetooth accessories will not reconnect, or an old pairing appears corrupted.
  • Mobile data, tethering, or carrier connectivity stopped working after a configuration change.
  • Several connection problems appeared together, but apps and files otherwise behave normally.

Before resetting, try ordinary, reversible checks: toggle Airplane mode, restart the phone, restart the router when Wi-Fi is involved, confirm the correct password, and install any available system or carrier update. A network reset is the next escalation when those checks do not correct a configuration problem. It is not a cure for a damaged app, a failing battery, or hardware that cannot transmit a signal.

What a factory reset deletes

Google’s Android Help gives the central warning: “Important: A factory reset erases all your data from your phone” (Google’s factory-reset guidance). Samsung describes the same operation as restoring factory settings and removing all personal data. Android.com also explains that the reset removes registered Google accounts, installed apps, and stored data from the device.

Accounts and applications

Google accounts registered on the phone, manufacturer accounts, email accounts, and other on-device account sessions are removed. Applications you installed, their local settings, and their locally cached content are removed as well. You will have to sign in again and reinstall apps during setup or afterward.

Personal files and settings

Photos, videos, downloaded documents, messages, call history, device settings, and other data stored locally are erased. Data that existed only on the phone is not recreated by signing in unless a backup contains it. Content synchronized to a cloud service may be downloadable again, but that depends on whether synchronization or backup was enabled and completed before the reset.

What “everything” means

“Everything” means the phone’s on-device user data and configuration, not necessarily every copy of your information elsewhere. A photo already synchronized to a cloud photo library, for example, can remain in that account while its local copy is deleted. A file that was never backed up has no equivalent copy for Android to restore after the reset.

Back up and verify credentials before a factory reset

A reset cannot be undone from the phone. Treat preparation as a required part of the procedure, not an optional precaution.

  • Confirm the Google Account. Write down the exact username and password currently accepted on the phone. Google says account information is needed to restore data after resetting.
  • Check the backup status. In Settings, review the device-backup and account-sync screens and wait for any pending backup to finish on a reliable connection. Open important photos, contacts, messages, notes, and documents from the relevant cloud service to verify that they are actually present.
  • Export irreplaceable files. Copy files to a computer or another trusted location if they are not covered by a backup. Include downloads, recordings, locally stored documents, and application data that an app does not synchronize.
  • Save authentication access. Make sure you can receive sign-in codes or use another approved method if two-step verification is enabled. Keep recovery codes available rather than relying on the phone that is about to be erased.
  • Check manufacturer credentials. Samsung may request Samsung-account credentials during its reset or setup process. Other manufacturers can apply their own account checks.
  • Charge and connect the phone. Use sufficient battery and make sure the device can reach Wi-Fi or mobile data after the reset so setup and account verification can complete.

If you are selling or transferring the phone, remove personal accounts through the normal Settings process when possible and follow the manufacturer’s current transfer instructions. A reset performed without the correct account credentials can leave the next setup blocked.

Factory Reset Protection and the password question

After a reset, Android may require proof that the person setting up the phone is the owner. Samsung calls this Factory Reset Protection (FRP). Its support guidance says the Google Account previously registered on the phone may be required, particularly when the reset was performed by a method other than the Settings option.

This is why “Will I need my Google password?” cannot be answered with a universal no. You should assume that you will need the previously registered Google Account username and password. A network reset does not normally trigger this ownership check because it does not erase the account or return the phone to setup.

How to perform a factory reset

The exact labels differ, but the Settings route follows the same logic on most current Android phones. Search Settings for factory data reset or erase all data if the menu path on your model is different.

  1. Finish the backup and credential checklist. Do not continue while important data is still only on the phone or while you cannot sign in to the registered account.
  2. Open Settings and find the reset menu. Common groupings include System, General management, or a dedicated Reset option. Select the item explicitly labeled “Factory data reset” or equivalent.
  3. Read the deletion list. The confirmation screen should identify accounts, applications, settings, and personal data that will be removed. If it describes only Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or mobile settings, you are in a network-reset menu instead.
  4. Confirm with the screen lock. Enter the PIN, pattern, or password when requested, then approve the final erase command. The phone will restart and clear its local data.
  5. Wait for the setup screen. Do not interrupt the process. When Android displays the initial welcome or setup flow, the factory reset has completed.
  6. Restore deliberately. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, sign in with the previously registered account, and select the correct backup. Reinstall applications in stages so you can identify an app that may have caused the original instability.

If the phone cannot be unlocked or Settings will not open, manufacturers may document a separate button or recovery procedure. Those methods can be more likely to invoke FRP, so have the previously registered Google Account and any manufacturer credentials ready before using them.

Choosing the least destructive fix

Choose a network reset when

The failure is limited to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mobile data, APN behavior, or related connection configuration; the phone otherwise starts, unlocks, and runs apps normally; and you can re-enter network passwords and pair accessories again.

Choose a factory reset when

The phone remains severely unstable after ordinary troubleshooting, cannot be reliably unlocked, or is being given to another person. A factory reset is also appropriate when you intentionally need a clean initial-setup state, provided that the backup and credential checks are complete.

Do not escalate merely because a network reset is inconvenient

A factory reset will not make missing Wi-Fi passwords or Bluetooth pairings easier to recover; it adds the loss of apps, accounts, and local files. Use the smallest reset that addresses the symptom, then escalate only when the problem justifies the data-loss risk.

Troubleshooting branches

Wi-Fi still fails after a network reset

Test another network to separate a phone problem from a router or access-point problem. If only one network fails, confirm its password, captive-portal sign-in, and any administrator requirements. If every network fails, check for system updates and contact the phone manufacturer or carrier; repeating the same reset will not repair defective radio hardware.

Mobile data does not return

Confirm that the SIM or eSIM service is active, mobile data is enabled, and the carrier has not changed its configuration requirements. If the carrier supplied APN values, enter them exactly as instructed. Network-reset scope differs by model, so a missing mobile-network option may be normal on a phone that separates it from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The phone is unstable after a factory reset

Complete setup with the minimum required accounts and install updates before restoring every application. If instability returns only after a particular app or backup is restored, isolate that software rather than immediately erasing the phone again. Persistent failures at the clean setup screen point toward a system or hardware problem requiring manufacturer support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are stuck at account verification

Use the Google Account that was registered on the phone before the reset, not a newly created account. Check the spelling of the username and password, establish a working internet connection, and use the account-recovery process from another device if necessary. FRP is an ownership safeguard; bypass attempts are not a substitute for the legitimate credentials.

Bottom line: reset the setting, not the whole phone

A network reset is the focused remedy for broken connectivity: it removes saved Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and applicable mobile-network configuration while leaving apps and personal data in place. A factory reset is an erasure and return to initial setup: accounts, apps, settings, and local files are removed, backups become essential, and ownership verification may follow. Start with restart and ordinary troubleshooting, use the network reset for network symptoms, and reserve the factory reset for serious instability or a deliberate transfer after verifying backups and credentials.
