You can add a lock-screen shortcut without installing an app, but the exact controls depend on your phone maker and Android version. On a Pixel, the documented route is Wallpaper & style > Lock screen > Shortcuts. Motorola’s Android 14 instructions put the controls under Customize lock screen, while Samsung’s documented corner controls apply to Knox-managed devices rather than serving as a complete consumer Galaxy tutorial.
Use the instructions for your exact model, then review lock-screen notification privacy. A corner shortcut is not the same feature as a lock-screen widget, and neither feature is guaranteed to appear on every Android phone.

Which Android lock-screen shortcut method applies to your phone?
Start by identifying the manufacturer, model and Android release shown in Settings > About phone. Android is not a single lock-screen interface: each manufacturer can rename the customization screen, change its location and offer a different set of actions. The following map prevents you from applying Pixel instructions to a Motorola or Samsung device.
| Manufacturer and documented context | Software reference | Settings path or control | Shortcut choices or scope | Documentation audience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel phones | Current Pixel instructions; Android version is model-dependent | Home screen long-press > Wallpaper & style > Lock screen > swipe up > Shortcuts | Do not disturb, Home, QR code scanner, Wallet, Camera, Flashlight, Mute and Video camera | Consumer Pixel setup |
| Motorola moto g stylus 5G (2024) | Android 14 | Lock screen long-press > Customize lock screen, or Settings > Home & lock screen > Lock screen > Customize lock screen | Two lower-corner shortcut widgets; the guide does not state a complete universal choice list | Consumer model guide |
| Samsung Knox Configure | Managed-device configuration | Administrator policy sets the bottom-left and bottom-right lock-screen shortcuts | Defaults in that managed configuration are the phone and camera applications | Enterprise administration, not a complete consumer Galaxy walkthrough |
If your menu names differ, search Settings for lock screen, customize lock screen or shortcuts. The support guide for the exact model and software version is more reliable than a generic Android tutorial.

How to add or change shortcuts on a Pixel
Pixel’s current documented editor assigns one action to each lower lock-screen corner. You can change either side independently.
- Go to the Home screen and touch and hold an empty area.
- Tap Wallpaper & style.
- Swipe right until you reach Lock screen.
- Swipe up to reveal the lock-screen settings.
- Tap Shortcuts.
- At the bottom of the preview, tap Left shortcut or Right shortcut.
- Select the action you want assigned to that corner.
- Tap Apply.
Repeat the process for the other corner if you want to configure both sides. To change a shortcut later, return to the same editor, choose the side and select a different action before tapping Apply.
Pixel actions documented by Google
The Pixel list contains eight documented choices:
- Do not disturb for quickly changing interruption behavior.
- Home for the Home control supplied by the phone.
- QR code scanner for scanning a code without first finding the scanner in the app drawer.
- Wallet for reaching the phone’s wallet entry point.
- Camera for opening the still-photo camera.
- Flashlight for controlling the torch.
- Mute for changing the phone’s sound state.
- Video camera for opening video capture directly.
This is a Pixel-specific documented list, not an Android-wide guarantee. A different Pixel model, carrier build or software release may present a changed list, so treat the choices visible on your phone as authoritative.
What the Apply button changes
Apply saves the selected left or right assignment to the lock-screen layout. It does not change your Home-screen icons, Quick Settings tiles or notification policy. Those are separate customization areas. If the preview does not update, leave the editor and lock the phone once; then check the corners again. If the selected item is still absent, reopen the editor and verify that the change was saved.
How Motorola’s Android 14 lock-screen editor works
Motorola’s guide for the moto g stylus 5G (2024) running Android 14 uses a different entry point from Pixel. You can open the editor in either of two ways:
Rank #2
- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the lock screen, then open Customize lock screen.
- Alternatively, open Settings > Home & lock screen > Lock screen > Customize lock screen.
Inside the editor, tap the shortcut widget in either lower corner to add or remove a shortcut. Motorola’s guide says the changes apply automatically, so there is no separate Pixel-style Apply button in this documented flow.
Why Motorola instructions cannot be substituted for Pixel instructions
The two guides describe the same general idea—corner entry points on the locked display—but they expose different menus and controls. Motorola calls the corner controls shortcut widgets and documents adding or removing them; Pixel presents named Left shortcut and Right shortcut selectors. The Motorola guide does not establish a universal list of available actions for every Motorola phone, so do not promise that all eight Pixel choices will appear.
If your Motorola software does not show Customize lock screen, use Settings search for lock screen. Confirm the model and Android release before following instructions written for another Motorola family.
What Samsung documentation establishes—and what it does not
Samsung Knox Configure documentation shows that administrators can set the bottom-left and bottom-right lock-screen shortcuts on managed devices. In that managed configuration, the defaults are the phone and camera applications.
That evidence demonstrates configurable corners for Knox-managed phones, but it is not a consumer, step-by-step Galaxy setup guide. A personal Galaxy phone may expose different controls, and an organization can enforce a policy that overrides what an employee tries to select. If the phone belongs to a company, ask the administrator whether the lock screen is controlled by Knox or another management policy before troubleshooting the user interface.

If the shortcut menu is missing
A missing menu usually means that the instructions belong to another manufacturer, Android release or managed-device policy. Work through these checks in order rather than resetting the phone.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →1. Search the phone’s own Settings
Open Settings and search for lock screen, customize lock screen and shortcuts. Read the results for a path containing lock-screen customization. Menu labels can differ even between two phones from the same manufacturer.
2. Confirm the software and model
Open Settings > About phone and note the model name and Android version. Compare both details with the support guide you are reading. The Motorola path above is specifically documented for the moto g stylus 5G (2024) on Android 14; it should not be presented as a universal Motorola route.
3. Check whether an administrator controls the phone
Work, school and kiosk phones may have a policy that fixes the corner shortcuts or removes customization. Samsung’s Knox documentation is an example of an administrator setting both corners. On a managed device, the administrator—not the end user—may have to make the change.
4. Distinguish a missing shortcut from a missing app
The shortcut picker can only offer actions that the software supports. If you are looking for a particular third-party app and it is not listed, the phone may limit corner assignments to built-in actions. Do not assume that installing another app will add a new lock-screen slot; the cited Pixel and Motorola instructions describe system-provided controls, not an open app registry.

5. Recheck after saving
Pixel requires Apply; Motorola’s documented editor saves automatically. Lock and unlock the phone once after changing the setting. If the old icon remains, return to the same editor and verify the selected side, then check whether a work profile or administrator policy has restored the previous assignment.
Shortcut versus lock-screen widget
A shortcut is a quick action or entry point assigned to a lock-screen corner in the Pixel and Motorola instructions. A lock-screen widget is a separate surface that can display controls or information. Seeing one feature documented does not prove that the other is available on your phone.
Platform availability is still evolving
Google’s Android Developers FAQ says Pixel Tablets already had lock-screen widgets and describes AOSP availability for tablets and mobile beginning with the release after Android 16 QPR1. Manufacturer rollout and the interaction used to reveal or trigger a widget can vary. That information does not establish a minimum Android version for Pixel corner shortcuts; the Pixel shortcut instructions and the widget platform timeline are separate matters.
Security requirements for widgets that launch activities
According to the developer guidance, a widget that launches an activity from the lock screen must require authentication or declare android:showWhenLocked="true". This is an app-development requirement, not a setting you can add to a normal corner shortcut. If a widget asks you to unlock before opening a protected activity, that behavior is expected security, not evidence that the widget failed.
Protect notification privacy after changing the layout
Adding a convenient corner action does not automatically change notification visibility, but lock-screen customization is a good time to review it. A shortcut can make the locked display something you reach more often, while notifications may still expose message previews or other sensitive information.

Pixel notification controls
Pixel settings let you control whether notifications appear on the lock screen and whether sensitive content is shown. Choose the level that matches the people who can see your phone while it is locked: full alerts, alerts with sensitive details hidden, or no lock-screen notifications.
Motorola notification controls
Motorola’s Android 14 guide describes options to show, limit or hide lock-screen notifications. The exact labels can vary by software version, so read the explanatory text beside each setting rather than relying on a screenshot from another model.
Use the least revealing setting that still works
If the phone is used in public or shared spaces, hide sensitive content while keeping a generic alert visible. If confidential notifications should never appear before authentication, disable lock-screen notifications entirely. These choices are independent of whether the corner shortcut is Camera, Flashlight, Wallet or another action.

On a Pixel, choose actions based on what you need before unlocking, not on how often you open the corresponding app after unlocking.
- Camera or Video camera: best when immediate image capture matters and you want separate still-photo and video entry points.
- Flashlight: useful for a physical light without navigating through the Home screen.
- QR code scanner: convenient for codes on signs, packages or another screen.
- Wallet: puts payment or pass access at a corner, subject to the phone’s own authentication and security behavior.
- Do not disturb or Mute: appropriate when changing sound or interruption state is more valuable than opening an app.
- Home: useful if the Home control is part of your normal lock-screen routine.
There is no universally best pair. Consider which two actions save the most steps and which ones you are comfortable exposing on a visible locked display.
Google’s design goal and the limits of a universal recipe
In an Android announcement dated October 12, 2023, Sebastian Bauer, Senior Director, Android Design, described the feature this way: With our new custom quick shortcut feature, you can personalize what you want to access directly from your lock screen.
The statement explains the purpose—personalized access—but not a single menu path for every Android phone. The documented Pixel and Motorola routes show why a universal recipe would be misleading: one uses Wallpaper & style and an Apply button, while the other uses Customize lock screen and automatic saving. Manufacturer software, Android release and device-management policy all influence what you see.

Practical checklist before you finish
- Identify the phone manufacturer, exact model and Android version.
- Use that model’s lock-screen customization path rather than assuming Pixel menus apply everywhere.
- Assign the left and right corners separately where the editor provides two controls.
- Save with Apply on Pixel; expect automatic saving in Motorola’s documented Android 14 editor.
- Lock the phone once and verify that each corner behaves as expected.
- Review whether notification previews or sensitive content are visible while locked.
- If controls are absent, check Settings search, the exact support guide and any work-device administrator policy.
- Do not confuse corner shortcuts with lock-screen widgets; they are separate features with different availability.
The bottom line
For a Pixel, use Wallpaper & style > Lock screen > Shortcuts, select the left or right action and tap Apply. For the documented Motorola moto g stylus 5G (2024) on Android 14, open Customize lock screen and tap the lower-corner shortcut widgets; changes apply automatically. Other Android phones may use different labels, offer different actions or place the controls under an administrator policy, so verify the model-specific path and check notification privacy before relying on the new shortcuts.
