Android keyboard shortcuts are commands sent by a physical keyboard. Depending on the device, app, and accessibility service, a shortcut can edit text, move around Android, open an app function, control a browser, or operate screen-reader features. They are not one universal list shared by every phone, tablet, and app.
On supported tablets, view the general list at Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard > Keyboard shortcuts. TalkBack shortcuts are managed separately in TalkBack settings, while individual apps can provide their own commands. If “where they are stored” means a single file or database containing everything, Android does not document one central location.

What Android keyboard shortcuts can do
A physical keyboard gives Android three broad kinds of shortcuts. The same key combination may behave differently in each context, so treat a shortcut as belonging to the system, the active app, or an accessibility service rather than assuming it is universal.
| Shortcut area | What it controls | Typical examples |
|---|---|---|
| System and text editing | Common editing and navigation actions across supported Android interfaces | Copy and paste commands such as Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V |
| App-specific | Commands implemented by the foreground app | A browser can use Ctrl+T for a new tab; mail and productivity apps may expose their own commands |
| Accessibility | Screen-reader navigation and physical-keyboard assistance | TalkBack navigation commands, plus features such as Sticky Keys or Mouse Keys on supported Android releases |
Whether a command works depends on the connected keyboard, its layout, Android version, device maker, current app, and any service that has focus. A shortcut documented for a browser is not a promise that another browser or an ordinary text field will implement it.

Where to view the general shortcut list
Google’s tablet instructions place the built-in list in the physical-keyboard settings. Use this path on a supported device:
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Open Keyboard.
- Tap Physical keyboard.
- Under the available options, tap Keyboard shortcuts.
The final item opens a list of useful shortcuts recognized by that Android installation. Google labels this control “Keyboard shortcuts: Tap to display a list of useful keyboard shortcuts.” The exact wording or nesting can differ on another manufacturer’s tablet, an older Android release, or a different form factor.
Related physical-keyboard options
The same settings area can expose controls that affect how shortcuts are interpreted:
- Modifier keys: Change the behavior of Caps Lock, Ctrl, Alt, and other physical modifier keys. This matters when a keyboard’s printed labels do not match the modifier behavior you expect.
- Keyboard layout: Select the language and physical arrangement that match the keys you are pressing. A mismatched layout can make a shortcut appear broken because Android receives a different character or symbol.
- Connection and pairing: Confirm that the Bluetooth or other supported physical keyboard is actually selected and connected before testing commands.
These controls describe the keyboard currently selected by Android. They do not create a universal remapping layer for every app.

How app shortcuts differ from system shortcuts
Apps receive keyboard events and can assign commands to them. Android Help’s examples distinguish system editing commands from commands in Chrome, Gmail, and other Google productivity apps. For example, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V are common editing operations, while Ctrl+T opens a new browser tab in an app that supports that command.
To discover an app’s commands, first open that app and check its Help, keyboard-shortcut dialog, or menus. The app is the authority for its own bindings. A command can be unavailable when a text field, dialog, web page, or different app component has focus. Some apps also reserve combinations for their own functions, so an app command can take precedence over a general editing shortcut.
Practical test for an app shortcut
- Connect and select the physical keyboard in Android settings.
- Open the app in which you want to use the command.
- Place focus on the relevant area, such as a text box or browser page.
- Use the app’s documented key combination exactly, including its modifier key.
- If nothing happens, repeat the test in a simple text field. This separates a keyboard or Android problem from an app-specific limitation.
TalkBack shortcuts have their own settings
TalkBack does not simply reuse the general physical-keyboard list. It maintains its own keymap and command assignments for screen-reader navigation.

Modifier and reassignment controls
TalkBack settings let you choose the TalkBack modifier and reassign commands. Depending on the selected keymap and keyboard, the modifier can be Alt or Action. The guide describes Windows-key and Command-key mappings for Action on those keyboard types. Because the available modifier depends on the keymap and hardware, do not assume that a shortcut written for one keyboard will use the same physical key on another.
To change a TalkBack command, open TalkBack settings, select the keyboard-shortcut or keymap controls, choose the command, and assign the desired key combination when the interface offers that option. A reassignment affects TalkBack; it does not rewrite an app’s shortcut table or the general Android list.
Physical-keyboard accessibility in Android 16 and later
Google documents additional physical-keyboard accessibility features for Android 16.0 and later. They address accidental repeats, pointer control, modifier entry, and keys that are triggered too easily or not easily enough.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Feature | Purpose | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Bounce Keys | Ignores rapid repeated presses | Useful when an involuntary tremor or a key bounce produces duplicate characters |
| Mouse Keys | Uses keyboard controls to move the pointer | Useful when a touchpad or touchscreen is difficult to use |
| Slow Keys | Requires a key to be held for a specified time before accepting it | Reduces accidental presses |
| Sticky Keys | Lets modifier keys activate one at a time instead of being held simultaneously | Helps users who cannot comfortably press a modifier and another key together |
The physical-keyboard accessibility page also documents Action+Alt combinations for enabling some features. Use the combinations shown for your Android version rather than relying on a shortcut from another release. These features are separate from TalkBack’s keymap and from an app’s own shortcuts.

Where Android shortcuts are actually stored
“Stored” can mean three different things: where you view a list, where you change behavior, or where software keeps the definitions internally. Android’s public documentation supports separate locations and owners, not one all-purpose shortcut database.
| Shortcut owner | Where a user encounters it | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Android physical-keyboard settings | Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard > Keyboard shortcuts | The settings surface displays useful shortcuts and includes modifier-key controls. The exact menu can vary by device and release. |
| Individual apps | The app’s menus, Help, or shortcut dialog | The app defines and handles its own commands. There is no guarantee that another app uses the same bindings. |
| TalkBack | TalkBack settings, keymap selection, and command-assignment screens | TalkBack maintains its own keymaps, modifier choice, and reassignments. |
| Developer-defined metadata | Inside an app’s implementation | Android APIs represent shortcut labels, keys, and modifier sets; apps can register groups of shortcuts. |
| Settings implementation | System software rather than a normal user file | Android’s open-source Settings configuration contains a keyboard_shortcuts_helper preference entry, which corroborates the settings screen but does not reveal a file containing every shortcut. |
The KeyboardShortcutInfo API represents a shortcut with a label, a key or base character, and a set of modifiers. It was added in API level 24. Android’s Compose documentation also describes registering groups of keyboard shortcuts for an app. Those are developer interfaces for describing or exposing commands; they are not instructions to edit a user-accessible, system-wide shortcut file.
Consequently, searching a Settings database, keyboard-layout file, or shared configuration for “all Android shortcuts” will not produce a complete answer. System settings, applications, and accessibility services own different parts of the behavior.

How to change the behavior you need
Change modifier behavior
- Go to Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard.
- Open Modifier keys.
- Select the physical key whose behavior you want to change, such as Caps Lock, Ctrl, or Alt.
- Choose the available replacement behavior and test it in a text field and in the target app.
Change a TalkBack command
- Open TalkBack settings.
- Choose the keymap, Default or Enhanced, that matches your navigation needs.
- Set the TalkBack modifier offered for your keyboard.
- Open shortcut or command assignments and select the command to reassign.
- Press the new combination, then test it in both ordinary text and web navigation if those are important to you.
Change an app command
Use the app’s own shortcut settings or Help. Android’s system settings cannot reliably replace a command that an app has registered internally. If the app provides no remapping control, your options are usually its documented binding, a different keyboard layout, or an accessibility feature that meets the same need.

Why a shortcut may not work
- The wrong keyboard is selected: In physical-keyboard settings, verify that Android recognizes the connected keyboard you are pressing.
- The keyboard is disconnected: Reconnect or re-pair it, then confirm that keystrokes appear in a text field.
- The layout is wrong: Select the layout matching the keyboard’s printed language and arrangement.
- A modifier was remapped: Check Modifier keys and TalkBack’s modifier choice before testing again.
- The app does not implement the command: Test the same combination in another supported app and consult the first app’s Help.
- Focus is elsewhere: A dialog, text box, browser page, or system panel may receive the key event instead of the area you intended.
- TalkBack owns the combination: A TalkBack command can take precedence over an app command while TalkBack is active. Check the selected keymap and assignment.
- The Android release lacks the feature: Physical-keyboard accessibility additions such as Bounce Keys, Mouse Keys, Slow Keys, and Sticky Keys are documented for Android 16.0 and later.
Pixel Help specifically advises checking the selected physical keyboard when shortcuts fail. That check is important because Android can have more than one input method or previously paired keyboard available, and the shortcut list describes the selected physical keyboard rather than every device you have ever connected.
What to look for when choosing a physical keyboard
A keyboard does not automatically provide a universal Android shortcut-remapping system. Choose one based on the parts that Android can configure and the way you work.
| Decision | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Device compatibility | Android must recognize the keyboard and expose its physical-keyboard settings | Confirm compatibility with the exact tablet or phone model and Android release |
| Connection type | Pairing and input behavior differ by connection method | Check Bluetooth support or the other supported connection required by your device |
| Physical layout and language | Incorrect layouts change symbols and modifier behavior | Match the keyboard’s printed layout to the layout selected in Android |
| Modifier-key behavior | Caps Lock, Ctrl, Alt, and Action-related commands may be arranged differently | Confirm which keys Android lets you change and whether the keyboard uses Windows- or Command-style keys |
| Touchpad | A pointing surface can reduce the need to reach for the screen | Decide whether you need an integrated touchpad and whether Android recognizes it |
Check the device and keyboard documentation before buying. Compatibility, layout, and modifier behavior are more consequential for shortcuts than the presence of a marketing claim about “Android shortcuts.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe practical answer to “where are they stored?”
For viewing, start with the physical-keyboard Keyboard shortcuts screen. For an app command, use that app’s own documentation. For screen-reader commands, use TalkBack’s keymap and assignment settings. For accessibility behavior introduced in Android 16, use the physical-keyboard accessibility settings. If you are looking for a single file containing every command, Android’s documented architecture does not provide one: shortcut definitions are distributed among system settings, apps, and accessibility services.
