Google has not announced a month or day. The timing comes from a banner activated in the Digital Wellbeing beta, so it represents a reported, planned deprecation rather than a completed shutdown.
What is happening to Heads Up?
Heads Up is an opt-in feature inside Android’s Digital Wellbeing suite. It detects when you are walking while your phone’s display is unlocked and displays a reminder to pay attention to your surroundings. A banner found in Digital Wellbeing beta version 1.49.99 says, “Heads Up will stop working in 2027.” The message does not specify when in 2027 the change will take effect.
The wording is significant: it says the feature will stop working, not merely that Google plans to hide a setting. However, the notice was found in beta software rather than in a formal Google announcement. Google could change the schedule or messaging before a public release, so 2027 should be treated as the expected timeframe currently reported.
How the warning was discovered
Android Authority reported the in-app banner on October 15, 2026, after activating it in Digital Wellbeing beta 1.49.99. The discovery follows an earlier APK teardown published on September 24, 2026, of Digital Wellbeing version 1.48.975819457.beta. That earlier build contained the strings “⚠️ Walking detection is going away soon” and “Be careful while walking.”

What Heads Up actually did
Heads Up was designed for a narrow but useful situation: walking with an unlocked screen. The feature primarily used the phone’s motion sensors to infer that the user was moving. Users could optionally grant location access, allowing Digital Wellbeing to distinguish indoor pacing from being outside on the street.

It first launched on Pixel 2 and newer Pixel phones before expanding to other Android devices. Because availability depended on the phone and Digital Wellbeing software version, not every Android handset necessarily offered identical behavior or settings.
When exactly will Heads Up stop working?
No exact date is known. The current evidence supports only “sometime in 2027.” Neither the reported banner nor the earlier deprecation strings identify a month, day, rollout phase or minimum Android version. The feature may disappear through a Digital Wellbeing update, a server-side change, or both; the available reports do not establish which delivery method Google will use.

The activated banner makes the plan more concrete than an unused string, but it is still beta evidence. Until Google publishes a formal support notice, users should regard the shutdown as expected rather than guaranteed on a specific date.
Is Google replacing the walking detector?
No official replacement has been identified. The newer banner directs users to explore other Digital Wellbeing tools “to help you stay present and maintain a healthy balance with your phone.” That is a general suggestion, not a named successor that detects walking and issues the same type of alert.
Other Digital Wellbeing controls may help reduce distraction, but they should not be assumed to reproduce Heads Up’s motion-based behavior. A genuine substitute would need to match several details: detection while the screen is unlocked, alert timing during movement, device coverage, battery use and any location permission requirements. None of those replacement specifications has been published in the reports describing the deprecation.

Why might Google be discontinuing it?
Google has not published a reason in the reported material. The beta strings and banner explain that walking detection is going away, but do not cite low usage, technical limitations, privacy concerns, battery impact or another rationale. Any explanation beyond that would be speculation.
What Android users should do now
- Check your current status: Open Digital Wellbeing and look for the Heads Up setting or its walking-detection controls. The menu can vary by device and software version.
- Keep expectations realistic: If the feature is present today, it may continue until a future Digital Wellbeing update removes it, but there is no guaranteed end date beyond the reported 2027 window.
- Review permissions: Heads Up could use motion sensors and, when granted, location access. If you no longer want that data used, review Digital Wellbeing’s permissions in Android Settings.
- Use broader attention controls: Digital Wellbeing’s remaining tools may help limit interruptions or encourage screen breaks, but they are not confirmed replacements for walking detection.
- Watch for an official notice: Google’s release notes or support documentation will be the authoritative source for the final date, affected devices and any successor feature.
What this means for the feature’s future
Heads Up is not documented as already removed. The strongest current conclusion is that Google is preparing to retire it and has told beta users that it will stop working in 2027. Until a public announcement supplies a date and a replacement, users should plan for the walking reminder to disappear without assuming another Android tool will automatically take its place.
