To enable Android’s developer mode, open Settings, find Build number, and tap it seven times. Enter your PIN or password when prompted. Android then displays “You are now a developer!” and adds a Developer options screen. The exact location of Build number and the new menu varies by manufacturer and Android version, but the seven-tap method applies to Android 4.2 and later.
What enabling developer mode actually does
Android does not usually label the feature “developer mode” in its menus. The setting is called Developer options. Tapping Build number seven times makes that settings screen visible; it does not automatically activate every option on the screen, connect your phone to a computer, or turn on USB debugging.

Developer options contains controls intended for development, testing, device communication and troubleshooting. Most people reach it because a separate task requires USB debugging or, on supported phones, wireless debugging. If you only need to reveal the menu, stop after it appears. Do not change settings whose purpose you do not understand.

- Android version: The seven-tap procedure is documented for Android 4.2 and later.
- Screen lock credentials: Android may request the device PIN or password after the taps.
- Phone access: You must be able to open the Settings app and view About phone or its equivalent.
- No cable required: A USB cable is not needed merely to reveal Developer options. A cable is relevant only if you later choose a wired connection to development tools.
Enable Developer options in seven taps
- Open Settings.
- Open the section containing device information. It is commonly named About phone, although the surrounding menu can differ.
- Locate Build number.
- Tap Build number seven times in quick succession.
- If Android asks for your PIN or password, enter it.
- Wait for the confirmation message: “You are now a developer!”
- Return to the main Settings screen and look for Developer options, usually near the bottom of a System or Settings screen.
The taps must be on the Build number entry itself, not on the Android version, model name or another line in About phone. Once the confirmation appears, the menu remains available until you turn its master switch off or otherwise reset the device’s settings.

Where to find Build number on common phones
There is no single path that covers every current Android handset. Google’s documented examples show why you should use the path that matches your model.
| Phone example | Path to Build number | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel | Settings > About phone > Build number | Tap Build number seven times, then authenticate if prompted. |
| Samsung Galaxy S8 and later | Settings > About phone > Software information > Build number | Build number is one level deeper inside Software information. |
| Other Android phones | Use Settings search for “Build number” or check the manufacturer’s support instructions. | Menu names and locations can differ by device and Android version. |
These paths are examples rather than a promise that every Pixel or Samsung model uses exactly the same labels. If your phone has a customized Settings app, search is usually faster than opening every category manually. Search for the exact phrase Build number; if the result opens the entry, continue with the seven taps.
Open the new Developer options screen
After the success message, press Back until you reach the main Settings list, or reopen Settings. Scroll toward the bottom and check under System or directly in the Settings list for Developer options. Some manufacturers place it elsewhere or use a slightly different label, so use Settings search for “Developer options” if you do not see it.

Opening the screen does not require a computer, a USB cable or an internet connection. You can leave the options untouched and continue using the phone normally. The menu is a collection of independent controls; enabling the screen does not mean all of those controls are active.
Turn on USB debugging only when you need it
USB debugging is a separate switch inside Developer options. Android describes it as the control that lets Android Studio and other Android SDK tools communicate with the phone. Enabling Developer options alone does not grant that communication.
Android 9 and later
- Open Settings.
- Open System.
- Open Advanced, if that entry is collapsed.
- Tap Developer options.
- Find USB debugging and switch it on only for the task that requires it.
Google documents different menu paths for Android 8.x and Android 7.1 and earlier. On those releases, use the Developer options screen you exposed and look for USB debugging there; the exact surrounding labels depend on the phone.

When a computer connection is not part of your task, leave USB debugging off. Developer options is useful without it, and the separate switch lets you choose whether development tools should communicate with the handset.

Choose between wired and wireless debugging
| Connection method | Version and setup requirement | What you need | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired USB debugging | USB debugging enabled in Developer options; menu path varies by Android release. | A suitable data-capable USB cable and compatible connectors on both the phone and computer. | Use when a direct physical connection is convenient or wireless pairing is unavailable. |
| Wireless debugging | Supported on Android 11 and later; pair the phone with the workstation. | Phone and workstation connected to the same network. | Useful when you want Android development tools without keeping a USB cable connected. |
A cable is optional for the wired workflow in the sense that it is not needed to expose Developer options, but it is required for an actual USB connection. Choose a data-capable cable rather than one intended only for charging, and check the connector on each end: do not assume every Android phone or computer uses USB-C.
Wireless pairing on Android 11 and later
On a supported Android 11-or-later device, open Developer options and select Wireless debugging. Pair the phone with the workstation using the pairing controls shown there. Both devices must be on the same network for pairing. If a workstation should no longer have access, use the Wireless debugging settings to forget the paired workstation; Android also provides a way to revoke debugging authorizations.

Wireless debugging is an alternative connection method, not an additional step required to activate Developer options. If your phone is older than Android 11 or does not show Wireless debugging, use the wired method when your task requires computer communication.

Build number is not visible
- Open Settings search and enter Build number.
- Check About phone and, on some models, a nested software-information page.
- Confirm that you are looking at the phone’s own Settings app rather than a carrier or accessory app.
- Consult the manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model if search returns nothing.
Android’s documentation explicitly allows for device variation, so a different path is not evidence that the feature is unavailable.

- Tap the actual Build number row seven times; tapping a nearby version or model field will not activate the feature.
- Continue until Android displays “You are now a developer!” rather than stopping after a partial progress message.
- Enter the requested PIN or password. The activation is not complete until authentication succeeds.
- Return to Settings and search for Developer options instead of relying on its position in the list.
Developer options appears, but USB debugging is not where expected
USB debugging is inside Developer options, but the path around that screen changes across Android versions and manufacturers. Android 9 and later use Settings > System > Advanced > Developer options > USB debugging in Google’s documented path; Android 8.x and Android 7.1 and earlier use different arrangements. Search within Settings or inspect the full Developer options list for the USB debugging switch.

The computer does not connect
- For a wired connection, verify that the cable supports data and that both connectors fit the phone and computer.
- For wireless debugging, verify that the phone and workstation are on the same network and that pairing was completed.
- Check that USB debugging or Wireless debugging—the method you selected—is actually enabled inside Developer options.
- If the workstation was previously trusted but should be treated as new, revoke debugging authorizations or forget its wireless pairing, then pair again when appropriate.
How to use Developer options safely
Think of the screen as a toolbox, not a checklist. The only control you need to change should be the one required by your specific development or troubleshooting task. In particular, revealing the menu does not require turning on USB debugging, and USB debugging does not require enabling unrelated animation, rendering or networking controls.
When finished with a computer-based task, switch off USB debugging or Wireless debugging if you no longer need that connection. If you merely opened Developer options to inspect it, no further action is necessary. The exact reset behavior and available controls can differ by device, so follow the instructions for the task you are performing rather than changing several switches at once.
