On Android, a headphone can show as paired yet not be the active media output, and its Bluetooth profile can be connected without the Media audio switch enabled. Once playback is reaching the intended device, you can use an equalizer or hearing-personalization feature for preference-based changes. Codec controls in Developer options are compatibility tools, not universal sound-quality upgrades.
Menu names differ by phone maker, Android release, One UI version, region and headphone model. The paths below are common examples; if a label is missing, search Settings for terms such as Bluetooth, Media audio, audio device type, equalizer or codec.

What Android settings can actually change
“Better sound” can mean several different outcomes. A routing setting determines where audio plays. A volume setting determines how loud it is. An equalizer changes the balance of frequencies to suit your taste, while hearing-personalization tools tailor output to an individual hearing profile. Spatial-audio and device-type settings can expose features supported by particular phones and headphones. Bluetooth codec settings govern how the phone and headphones exchange audio and can affect compatibility or connection stability.

If music is being sent to the phone speaker, an equalizer will not solve the problem. If a codec connection is unstable, raising bass will not make it reliable. - 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
1. Confirm media volume and the active output
Android has separate sliders for media, calls, rings and notifications. Only the media slider controls music and video playback.
- Start playing a track or video.
- Press a volume button and expand the volume panel if necessary.
- Raise the Media slider. Do not assume the ringtone or notification slider changes music volume.
- Open the media controls from the notification shade or lock screen and select Play media to (wording varies). Choose the intended Bluetooth headphones rather than the phone speaker or another paired device.
- If the headphones have their own volume buttons or touch controls, set their level as well. Some models maintain a separate device-side level.
When several Bluetooth outputs have been paired, Android may keep one connected for calls while another is selected for media. Selecting the output in the media panel is therefore a more useful first test than repeatedly pairing the headphones.
2. Check the Bluetooth profile and device type
Make sure Media audio is enabled
- Open Settings → Connected devices (or Settings → Bluetooth).
- Tap the gear, settings icon or device name beside the paired headphones.
- Confirm that Media audio is switched on. Leave Phone calls enabled only if you also want the headphones to handle calls.
- Start playback again and verify the headphones are selected in the media output control.
A device can be paired and show as connected while its media-audio profile is disabled. This explains many “connected but no music” reports without any need to change codecs.

On Android versions that expose it, the same device page includes Audio device type. Choose Headphones when that is the accurate category. Google says device type can affect support for spatial audio and for hearing-health or loudness-measurement features; it is not presented as a blanket improvement for every pair of headphones.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Google’s Android Help also cautions that “Some of these steps work only on Android 15 and up.” If your phone does not show an audio-device-type control, that can be a version, manufacturer or hardware limitation rather than a fault.
3. Use equalizer and hearing-personalization controls deliberately
Samsung Galaxy example
On supported Galaxy phones, open Settings → Sounds and vibration → Sound quality and effects. Depending on the model, software release and connected headphones, you may see an Equalizer, Adapt sound or other effects.
- Equalizer: raises or lowers frequency bands. Use it to correct a preference such as too much bass or insufficient treble.
- Adapt sound: applies a hearing-personalization profile when the device offers that feature. Follow the on-screen listening procedure rather than assuming a preset suits everyone.
- Other effects: availability and behavior vary by Galaxy model, One UI version and accessory.
Change one control at a time, use familiar recordings and listen at a safe level. These settings optimize an individual preference; they do not establish an objective fidelity gain for every listener or every headphone.
Do not treat wired-only features as Bluetooth fixes
Samsung’s current US guidance describes UHQ upscaling for wired headphones. Do not interpret that option as a general Bluetooth enhancement. It may be absent, unavailable or irrelevant when the output is a Bluetooth headset.

4. Understand Bluetooth codec controls before opening Developer options
A Bluetooth codec is the audio format used between the phone and headphones. Both ends must support the selected codec, and Android’s available choices depend on the phone hardware and installed implementations. A codec listed on the phone is not proof that the headphones can use it.
What the advanced controls include
Android’s Developer options can expose Bluetooth Audio Codec, Bluetooth Audio Sample Rate, Bluetooth Audio Bits Per Sample, Bluetooth Audio Channel Mode and, on compatible combinations, LDAC quality or connection preferences. Exact entries differ by device.
| Control | What it changes | Dependency | Safer approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth Audio Codec | The negotiated audio format | Phone and headphones must both implement it | Leave the default unless diagnosing a specific compatibility issue; test one alternative at a time |
| Sample rate | The audio sampling rate requested by Android | Hardware and codec implementation | Keep the system value when there is no concrete problem |
| Bits per sample | Sample precision requested by the connection | Both devices and the active codec | Do not assume a larger number sounds better in every connection |
| Channel mode | How channels are negotiated | Headphone and codec support | Use the default unless a device-specific guide requires a change |
| LDAC quality or connection preference | A quality-versus-connection preference where LDAC is available | LDAC support on both ends and a compatible implementation | Prioritize a stable connection; reconnect after changes |
When changing a codec is justified
Use these controls only for a defined problem, such as a headphone that fails to connect under one negotiated format or a connection that drops in a particular environment. Change one option, disconnect and reconnect the headphones, then compare both sound and stability with familiar content. If the connection becomes unreliable, restore the previous value.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is no universally best codec or highest-numbered setting. Selecting the highest codec shown by the phone can silently fall back, fail to connect or reduce stability when the headphone does not support it. Codec support alone also does not prove audible superiority. A compatible headphone upgrade is an optional purchase only when your existing hardware lacks a codec or feature you specifically need; all checks in this guide are free.

5. Match device type to spatial-audio and hearing features
The Audio device type field is easy to overlook because it sits in the paired-device settings rather than in the sound-effects menu. When Android provides it, selecting the accurate category helps the system expose features designed for that type of accessory. Google specifically associates device type with supported spatial-audio behavior and hearing-health or loudness-measurement functions.
This setting does not turn ordinary stereo headphones into a spatial system, nor does it promise better frequency response. If a spatial option remains unavailable after the type is correct, the phone, Android release, application or headphones may not support the required feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Check accessibility processing separately
If the problem appears only while using Sound Amplifier or another accessibility audio feature, troubleshoot that feature rather than repeatedly changing Bluetooth codecs. Google warns that some Bluetooth headphones can introduce delay or lower quality with Sound Amplifier.
- Turn Sound Amplifier off briefly and play the same content through the same headphones.
- If quality or timing returns to normal, reopen Sound Amplifier and review its output and processing controls.
- Try another Bluetooth pair if available. If the delay persists, test wired headphones, which Google lists as an alternative for this issue.
A feature-specific delay is a processing and compatibility matter, not evidence that the headphones need a different equalizer preset.

“Can’t hear music”: a practical troubleshooting path
| Symptom | First checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No sound from the headphones | Media volume, Play media to output, and Media audio | Disconnect other outputs, reconnect the headphones and reselect them |
| Sound comes from the phone speaker | Media output picker and paired-device page | Select the headphones as the active media route |
| Headphones connect for calls but not music | Media audio toggle | Enable the profile, then start playback again |
| Sound is quiet | Phone media slider and headphone-side volume | Raise both gradually; check whether a hearing-safety limit is active |
| Audio cuts out after a codec change | Last Developer-options change | Restore the previous codec or defaults, reconnect and retest |
| Delay or reduced quality only with Sound Amplifier | Accessibility feature state | Disable it for comparison, then try another Bluetooth pair or wired headphones |
Restarting Bluetooth or the phone can clear a temporary connection state, but do it after recording which output, profile and codec were selected. Otherwise you may lose track of the change that fixed—or caused—the problem.
A safe order for tuning your headphones
- Route: play content and select the intended headphones in Play media to.
- Level: set the phone’s media volume and the headphone’s own volume.
- Profile: verify Media audio on the paired-device page.
- Classification: choose Headphones under Audio device type when Android offers that field.
- Preference: adjust one equalizer or hearing-personalization control and compare familiar material.
- Compatibility: use Developer options only for a specific codec or stability problem, changing one item at a time.
- Accessibility: if the issue occurs only with Sound Amplifier, test that feature independently.
This sequence separates routing faults from tonal preferences and from Bluetooth negotiation problems. It also gives you a known-good baseline before experimenting.
Which setting fits your goal?
| Desired outcome | Setting to inspect | What must be true |
|---|---|---|
| Hear music through the correct pair | Media output picker and Media audio | The headphones are paired and selected as the media route |
| Change bass, treble or personal balance | Equalizer or hearing-personalization controls | Your phone and software expose the feature |
| Use a spatial or loudness-related feature | Audio device type | The phone, Android version, app and headphones support it |
| Resolve codec negotiation or dropouts | Developer-options codec and connection settings | Both devices support the codec and the change is tested after reconnecting |
| Reduce accessibility-related delay | Sound Amplifier and its output path | The feature is the trigger; another Bluetooth pair or wired headphones may be needed |
When a different headphone is the only practical option
Settings cannot add hardware support. If a phone and headphones do not share a codec or a required spatial or accessibility capability, software menus cannot create that compatibility. In that case, look only for a headphone category that explicitly supports the feature your phone also supports—for example, LDAC when both devices implement LDAC. Treat that as a compatibility requirement, not a promise of better sound. No exact model or current listing is necessary to complete the checks above.

For most Android Bluetooth sound problems, the useful order is output selection, media volume, the Media audio profile and the correct device type. Equalizers and hearing-personalization tools are optional taste controls. Developer-options codec settings are advanced, hardware-dependent troubleshooting tools, and Sound Amplifier can introduce its own Bluetooth delay or quality limits. Verify the basics before changing anything that affects negotiation.
