Android battery health explained: how to check it and when to replace your battery

Android does not have one battery-health menu that works on every phone. The correct check depends on the manufacturer, model and Android version: Pixel 8a and newer have a Battery health screen, Pixel 6 and newer have Battery Diagnostics, and Galaxy phones can run a Battery status test in Samsung Members. A health estimate describes remaining capacity compared with a new battery; it does not promise a particular number of hours. Use the result together with battery-usage data and symptoms before paying for a replacement.

What “battery health” means on Android

Battery health is an estimate of how much charge the battery can hold now compared with when it was new. A lower capacity generally means less runtime between charges, but the percentage is not a direct runtime forecast. Screen brightness, mobile reception, games, camera use, background syncing, temperature and software can all change how quickly the phone reaches zero.

Android has no single, cross-manufacturer health page or universally authoritative percentage. A missing menu is not proof that the battery is healthy, and a warning is not, by itself, proof that the cell is the only cause of rapid drain. Start with the diagnostic that your phone supports, then review battery usage and the symptoms described later in this guide.

Which Android check should you use?

Phone and eligibility Exact route What the result represents What to do next
Google Pixel 8a and later Settings > Battery > Battery health Status (Normal, Reduced or Unavailable) and an estimated capacity Use the estimate and Google’s model-specific replacement guidance
Google Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold Settings > Battery > Battery Diagnostics Troubleshooting diagnostics, not the Battery health capacity estimate Follow the suggested checks or seek support if a warning appears
Samsung Galaxy Samsung Members > Support > Phone diagnostics > Battery status A Samsung battery-condition diagnostic Follow the result and Samsung’s service recommendation
Other Android phones Use the maker’s model-specific support page or diagnostic app Varies by manufacturer and software version Do not treat a third-party app as a universal authority

These outputs are not numerically interchangeable. A Pixel capacity estimate, a Pixel troubleshooting report and a Samsung diagnostic status answer different questions.

How to check battery health on a Google Pixel

Pixel 8a and newer: Battery health

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery health.
  4. Read the status and open Battery capacity for the estimated remaining capacity.

Google lists three statuses: Normal, Reduced and Unavailable. “Reduced” means the estimated remaining capacity is below 80 percent. Google recommends considering battery replacement at that point. “Unavailable” means the phone cannot provide the health estimate; it is not a declaration that the battery is new or healthy. The Battery health page is not available on Pixel Tablet. Google’s Pixel battery guidance lists the supported models and definitions.

Pixel 8a and later also expose a cycle count at Settings > About phone > Battery information. A charge cycle represents cumulative use of 100 percent of the battery’s capacity, not necessarily one uninterrupted charge from empty to full. Use the count as context for the estimate and symptoms, not as a standalone replacement trigger.

Pixel 6 and newer: Battery Diagnostics

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery Diagnostics.
  4. Run the relevant battery check and follow the on-screen recommendation.

Battery Diagnostics is available on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. It investigates battery problems, but it is a different feature from the Battery health capacity estimate. Pixel 6, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro do not show the Battery health status page. Do not interpret that missing status as a clean bill of health; use Battery Diagnostics and battery-usage information instead. Google also says a question mark on the battery icon is a reason to seek inspection or support. See Google’s Pixel battery troubleshooting guidance.

How to check battery condition on a Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open the Samsung Members app.
  2. Tap Support.
  3. Choose Phone diagnostics.
  4. Select Battery status and run the test.

Samsung’s menu names and available tests can vary by device and software version. Galaxy phones running Android 12 or later also have diagnostics in Device Care. If Samsung Members is not installed or the labels differ, open the support or Device Care area supplied with the phone rather than assuming that another Android menu will provide the same result. Samsung describes the test and service path in its Galaxy diagnostics instructions.

What to do if your phone is not a Pixel or Galaxy

There is no documented Android-wide path that guarantees a health percentage on phones from every other manufacturer. Check the phone maker’s support site for your exact model and software version, and look for a built-in battery diagnostic or service test. Some phones expose only battery usage, temperature or charging information; those screens can still help identify a power-hungry app but do not necessarily measure maximum capacity.

A third-party battery app may display an estimate based on charging history, but the official guidance reviewed here does not establish one app as authoritative for every manufacturer. Treat such readings as clues, not a reason by themselves to order a replacement cell. If the manufacturer provides no health estimate, rely on its service diagnostic and the phone’s real-world symptoms.

How to interpret the result

Normal or a high capacity estimate

Normal means the supported diagnostic does not currently identify an abnormal capacity condition. It does not guarantee all-day runtime: a recently installed app, weak cellular signal, high brightness or a software update can still drain a healthy battery quickly. Check the battery-usage screen if your runtime changed suddenly.

Reduced or below 80 percent on a supported Pixel

On Pixel 8a and later, Google defines Reduced as estimated capacity below 80 percent and says to consider replacement. That is a manufacturer recommendation for those Pixel models, not a universal Android rule. Confirm that the estimate is accompanied by the runtime or shutdown symptoms you are experiencing, then use Google’s approved repair or support route for your model.

Unavailable, missing or inconsistent information

An Unavailable status, a missing Battery health page or an inconsistent reading can result from model eligibility, software support or a diagnostic that cannot calculate capacity. It is not a reliable “healthy” or “replace now” verdict. Run the available diagnostics, review battery usage and contact the manufacturer if the phone also shows charging faults, unexpected shutdowns or a question-mark battery icon.

Samsung Battery status warnings

Samsung’s Battery status result is a diagnostic outcome rather than a Pixel-style percentage. Follow the action it gives you. Samsung says a degradation alert should lead to inspection at a Samsung service center rather than a do-it-yourself battery swap.

When is a battery replacement worth considering?

Pixel’s model-specific capacity and cycle guidance

Google says Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold batteries are designed to retain up to 80 percent capacity for about 800 charge cycles. Pixel 8a and later are designed for about 1,000 charge cycles. These are approximate rated-cycle figures, not a guarantee that every phone reaches exactly that point or that runtime becomes unacceptable immediately afterward. The replacement recommendation remains tied to the phone’s reported condition and symptoms. The figures and the Reduced definition are documented in Google’s Pixel battery-health support page.

Pixel family Approximate design guidance How to use it
Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold Up to 80% capacity for about 800 charge cycles Context for an aging battery; not a universal replacement deadline
Pixel 8a and later Up to 80% capacity for about 1,000 charge cycles Compare with the Battery health estimate, cycle count and symptoms

Because these numbers are manufacturer-specific, do not apply 80 percent or 800 cycles to a Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi or other Android phone unless that maker publishes the same guidance for that model.

Samsung symptoms that justify an inspection

Samsung identifies fast drain soon after charging and unexpected shutdowns, especially in cold conditions, as common signs of battery aging. If Samsung Members or Device Care reports degradation, arrange an inspection through Samsung’s service route. Those symptoms are prompts to investigate, not proof that the cell is the only fault; software, reception and temperature can produce similar behavior. Samsung’s replacement guidance is at this support page.

Symptoms that should not wait for a capacity percentage

  • The phone shuts down while the displayed charge is still substantial.
  • It becomes unusually hot during ordinary charging or light use.
  • Charging repeatedly stops, disconnects or takes far longer than it used to after you have ruled out the cable and charger.
  • The back cover or screen is lifting, indicating possible swelling.

The last symptom is a physical safety issue. Stop normal use and follow the swollen-battery instructions below instead of waiting for a health estimate.

Why a phone can drain quickly even when the battery is healthy

Find the biggest consumers first

Open your phone’s Battery usage view and inspect which apps and system components consumed power over the period in which the problem occurred. Compare foreground use with background use. A navigation, video, camera or game session can legitimately dominate the list; an app that remains near the top with little visible use deserves investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Update or remove an app that began using excessive background power.
  • Restrict background activity where your phone offers that control, while recognizing that notifications or syncing may be delayed.
  • Check display brightness, always-on features, hotspot use, location and Bluetooth accessories.
  • Test in a location with stronger cellular reception; a weak signal can make the modem work harder.

Allow for post-update activity

Google notes that a Pixel can use somewhat more power after a software update while it downloads and optimizes software. If the drain started immediately after an update, monitor it through that optimization period and check Battery usage before concluding that the battery has aged. Persistent abnormal drain after background work settles warrants diagnostics or support.

Consider temperature

Cold conditions can contribute to unexpected shutdowns on aging Galaxy batteries. Heat accelerates battery wear and can make charging behavior change temporarily. Remove the phone from direct sun or a hot car, avoid charging under bedding, and let it return to a normal temperature before judging capacity.

Battery-care practices that are supported for Pixel

Google recommends keeping Pixel phones cool and limiting heat exposure. It describes roughly 25°C (78°F) as a cool charging environment. Under specified conditions, such as prolonged charging at high temperatures, a Pixel may automatically limit charging to roughly 70–80 percent to protect the battery. This behavior is Pixel-specific; do not assume that every Android phone uses the same limit or temperature thresholds. The recommendations are summarized in Google’s Pixel battery-care guidance.

For any phone, use the charger and cable appropriate for the model, keep charging ports free of debris, and avoid judging health from a single hot or cold charging session. Battery protection features can reduce stress but cannot restore capacity already lost to aging.

What to do if the battery is swollen

A swollen battery can lift a phone’s screen or back, creating openings through which dust or liquid can enter and exposing the cell to more damage. Do not press the cover glass or back into place. Do not pry open the phone, puncture the battery or attempt a do-it-yourself repair. Power the device down if it is safe to do so, keep it away from heat and flammable materials, and arrange device-specific professional repair or local battery-recycling guidance. Google’s safety instructions are included in its Pixel battery-health documentation; the physical precautions apply whenever an Android battery is visibly swollen.

A practical replacement decision process

  1. Identify the exact model and software version. Eligibility for a health page and the meaning of a warning are model-specific.
  2. Run the official diagnostic. Use Pixel Battery health or Battery Diagnostics, Samsung Members or Device Care, or the maker’s equivalent.
  3. Record the result and symptoms. Note the estimate or status, unexpected shutdowns, charging behavior, temperature and the battery-usage leaders.
  4. Rule out software causes. Review recent app installs, updates, background activity, signal conditions and post-update optimization.
  5. Use the manufacturer’s service route. A Pixel Reduced result, a Samsung degradation alert or persistent diagnostic failure should be handled through the model’s approved repair channel.
  6. Back up before service. Battery work can require the phone to be opened or reset; preserve photos, authenticator data and other important information first.

Do not buy a generic battery or kit solely because its advertised capacity matches your phone. Batteries, adhesives, connectors and calibration procedures are model-specific, and an incompatible part can create charging or safety problems.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching for a universal menu: Android’s settings differ by manufacturer and model.
  • Treating a missing Pixel status as “good”: several Pixel 6–8 models simply do not expose the Battery health page.
  • Confusing diagnostics with capacity: Pixel Battery Diagnostics can investigate a problem without reporting the Battery health percentage.
  • Applying Pixel’s 80-percent figure everywhere: the threshold and cycle guidance are Google’s Pixel documentation, not an Android-wide standard.
  • Blaming the cell for every fast-drain complaint: inspect Battery usage, apps, reception, temperature and update activity.
  • Pressing a swollen phone closed: pressure or prying can damage an already compromised cell.

The short answer for each major situation

  • Pixel 8a or newer: use Settings > Battery > Battery health. Consider replacement when Google reports Reduced (below 80 percent), especially if runtime has also declined.
  • Pixel 6 through Pixel 8 Pro or Pixel Fold: use Settings > Battery > Battery Diagnostics; the absence of Battery health status on these models is expected.
  • Samsung Galaxy: run Samsung Members > Support > Phone diagnostics > Battery status, or use Device Care diagnostics on Android 12 and later.
  • Another Android phone: follow the manufacturer’s model-specific diagnostic instructions; there is no guaranteed universal health percentage.
  • Any phone with swelling: stop pressing or opening it and obtain professional repair or recycling guidance.
