Android Auto vs. Apple CarPlay: Which Is Easier to Customize?

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Apple CarPlay is the better-documented choice for changing the visible in-car interface. Apple documents controls for rearranging eligible app icons, adding and ordering widgets, changing wallpaper and appearance, and toggling Dashboard suggestions and album art. Google’s Android Auto guidance documents the launcher, dashboard and quick controls, plus dark theme and accessibility adjustments such as bold or outlined text and reduced animations, but it does not describe an equivalent layout editor or widget system.

That is a feature-breadth conclusion, not a measured claim that every driver will find CarPlay easier. Neither platform’s official help material provides a head-to-head usability test, time-on-task result or universal winner for ease. The practical choice depends on whether you want to redesign the car screen, adjust readability, or simply reach compatible apps quickly.

What “customize” means in this comparison

People use customize to mean several different things. A driver may want to change the order of app icons, add glanceable information, alter colors and wallpaper, enlarge or emphasize text, reduce motion, or decide which controls appear first. Those are changes to the projected in-car interface, not changes to the phone’s ordinary home screen.

Keeping those meanings separate prevents a misleading verdict. Android Auto can expose a launcher, recent-app area, dashboard, status area and quick controls, and Google documents display and accessibility choices. CarPlay goes further in Apple’s documentation by exposing icon management, widgets, wallpaper, appearance and Dashboard options. The documentation does not show how many seconds a typical driver needs to find each setting, so “more documented controls” should not be rewritten as “universally easier.”

Quick verdict by the kind of change you want

Customization goal Platform with the clearer documented path What the documentation establishes
Reorder the car-screen app icons Apple CarPlay Eligible Home icons can be moved; some can be removed and later restored from iPhone Settings.
Add or arrange glanceable information Apple CarPlay Widgets can be added, reordered and removed. Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions are available, and the number of stacks depends on the vehicle display.
Change wallpaper or in-car appearance Apple CarPlay CarPlay Settings includes wallpaper and appearance controls, plus switches for Dashboard suggestions and album art.
Use a dark display theme Android Auto and CarPlay have different documented controls Google documents a dark theme for Android Auto. Apple documents appearance controls in CarPlay but does not describe them using the same Android Auto terminology.
Make text more prominent or reduce motion Android Auto’s documented accessibility route Google describes bold text, outlined text and removing animations through phone accessibility options.
Find compatible apps Both provide an app route Android Auto has an app launcher and Google explains that compatible apps are available through the Play Store when the user is signed in and personalization is enabled. CarPlay’s documented icon controls manage the Home screen.

How much control Apple CarPlay gives you

Rearrange the Home screen icons

CarPlay lets you change the order of eligible icons before the next connection. The change is made from the iPhone rather than by dragging icons while driving.

  1. Park the vehicle and open Settings on the iPhone.
  2. Open the CarPlay controls for the vehicle you want to configure.
  3. Use the Home-screen arrangement control to move eligible icons into the order you prefer.
  4. If an icon has Apple’s remove control, remove it when you do not want it on the Home screen.
  5. To bring an eligible icon back, use the same control to add or restore it.
  6. Connect the iPhone to CarPlay again. Apple says the changes appear the next time CarPlay connects.

The eligibility rule matters: Apple does not say every icon can be removed. If a particular icon has no remove control, its presence is not something this setting lets you change. That is a useful boundary when comparing CarPlay with a general-purpose tablet launcher.

Add, order and remove widgets

Widgets are CarPlay’s most substantial documented personalization feature. Apple allows you to add widgets, change their order and remove them. You can also enable Smart Rotate or Widget Suggestions, which affect how the available widget information is presented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Do this while you are not driving. Open Settings on the iPhone.
  2. Open the CarPlay controls for the vehicle.
  3. Choose the widget-management area.
  4. Add the widgets you want, then reorder them so the most useful information appears first.
  5. Remove widgets you do not want and decide whether Smart Rotate or Widget Suggestions should be enabled.
  6. Reconnect to CarPlay and check the widget view on the vehicle display.

Screen size is a real constraint rather than a software fault. Apple says the number of widget stacks depends on the vehicle’s display. Two cars using the same iPhone may therefore expose different amounts of glanceable information. If a widget does not appear, check both its availability and the display’s stack capacity before assuming the setting failed.

Change wallpaper and appearance

CarPlay has an on-screen Settings area with controls for wallpaper and appearance. The same group of settings includes switches for Dashboard suggestions and album art.

  1. Connect the iPhone to the vehicle and open CarPlay’s Settings screen.
  2. Choose a wallpaper from the choices presented by CarPlay.
  3. Adjust the appearance setting to the look you prefer.
  4. Decide whether Dashboard suggestions should be shown.
  5. Decide whether album art should be displayed.
  6. Return to the CarPlay Home screen to confirm the result.

These controls change the projected CarPlay interface. They do not imply that every app’s internal screen can be redesigned. The documented options concern the shell around your apps: the background, overall appearance, Dashboard suggestions and album-art display.

What the CarPlay controls do not promise

  • Apple’s instructions limit removal to icons that expose the remove control.
  • Widget quantity varies with the vehicle display, so the same configuration is not guaranteed to fit every dashboard.
  • The documentation describes available controls, not a universal way to customize every third-party app.
  • Apple’s material does not provide a measured comparison showing that users complete these tasks faster than Android Auto users.

What Android Auto lets you adjust

Use the launcher, dashboard and recent-app areas

Google’s Android Auto screen guide identifies the main places you navigate: the app launcher, microphone, recent-app area and status area. It also describes a dashboard button and a setting for quick controls while another app is full-screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the Android phone to Android Auto and open the app launcher to see the available Android Auto apps.
  2. Use the recent-app area to return to an app you recently opened.
  3. Use the dashboard button to reach the dashboard view.
  4. When another app occupies the full screen, use the quick-controls setting described by Google if you want those controls available without leaving that app.
  5. Use the status area and microphone controls as provided by the interface.

This is navigation customization in the broad sense: you decide which Android Auto function to reach and how quickly to switch among the documented areas. Google’s guide does not describe a broad editor for dragging launcher icons into any arbitrary layout, nor does it establish a widget-stack system equivalent to CarPlay’s.

Find compatible apps without confusing availability with layout control

Android Auto supports apps and services for music, messaging, news and more. Google says that seeing all compatible apps in the Play Store requires being signed in and having personalization enabled.

  1. Sign in to the Google account used with the Android phone.
  2. Ensure personalization is enabled if you want the Play Store to show the full compatible-app selection described by Google.
  3. Look for Android Auto-compatible music, messaging, news and other services.
  4. Open the Android Auto app launcher in the car to see what is available for use there.

Adding a compatible app expands what you can do, but it is not the same as creating a custom launcher layout. App availability and icon placement are separate questions. The official guidance establishes the former more clearly than the latter.

Apply dark theme and accessibility changes

Google’s accessibility guide documents a dark theme and phone-level display options for bold text, outlined text and removing animations. These choices are valuable if readability, contrast or motion is your main concern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Park before changing settings. Android Auto’s accessibility guidance includes driving-safety constraints.
  2. Open the Android Auto settings available on the phone or in the connected interface.
  3. Choose the dark theme when that option is presented.
  4. Open the phone’s accessibility settings and enable bold text if heavier lettering is easier to read.
  5. Enable outlined text if that presentation improves legibility on your display.
  6. Use the option to remove animations if motion is distracting or you prefer a more static interface.
  7. Reconnect or return to Android Auto and check the result while parked.

These settings affect the way information is displayed; they are not evidence of an Android Auto Home-screen editor. In particular, bold or outlined text and reduced animations should be evaluated as readability and motion controls, not as replacements for CarPlay’s icon and widget management.

Android Auto vs. CarPlay: feature-by-feature comparison

Area Android Auto Apple CarPlay
App and Home layout Google describes the app launcher, recent apps and dashboard. Its guide does not describe a broad layout editor. Eligible Home icons can be rearranged; some can be removed or restored through iPhone Settings.
Widgets Google’s cited Android Auto pages do not establish an equivalent widget-stack customization system. Add, reorder and remove widgets; Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions can be enabled. Stack count depends on the car display.
Wallpaper and appearance A dark theme is documented. Wallpaper and appearance controls are documented, along with Dashboard-suggestion and album-art switches.
Text and motion Bold text, outlined text and removal of animations are documented as phone accessibility options. The cited CarPlay controls focus on appearance, icons, widgets and Dashboard options rather than these Android accessibility labels.
App discovery Compatible music, messaging, news and other apps can be found through the Play Store when signed in with personalization enabled, then accessed through the launcher. The cited controls manage the CarPlay Home screen; they do not establish a general catalog rule for every app.
Vehicle variation The cited pages do not provide a comprehensive cross-vehicle customization matrix. Apple expressly ties the number of widget stacks to the vehicle display.
Measured ease of use No head-to-head usability test or time-on-task measure is supplied. No head-to-head usability test or time-on-task measure is supplied.

Which system is easier for your specific goal?

Choose CarPlay when you want to redesign what you see

CarPlay is the stronger fit if your definition of customization includes moving icons, hiding eligible icons, arranging widgets, changing wallpaper or controlling Dashboard suggestions and album art. Those actions are explicitly documented and cover both structure and appearance.

It is particularly suitable when you want a repeatable setup across drives: arrange the Home screen once from iPhone Settings, configure widgets, choose the appearance you prefer and let the settings apply on the next connection. The vehicle display still determines how many widget stacks fit.

Choose Android Auto when readability and motion are the priority

Android Auto is a sensible fit if your main objective is a dark theme, heavier or outlined text, fewer animations, or a straightforward route to the launcher, dashboard and recent apps. Those are meaningful adjustments even though they do not amount to a broad layout editor.

For a driver who does not care about widgets or wallpaper, CarPlay’s larger documented feature list may not translate into a practical advantage. A dark theme or improved text treatment can matter more than moving an icon.

Use the platform that matches your phone and vehicle

Customization is only useful when the phone and vehicle support the relevant platform. The material cited here does not provide a complete vehicle-by-vehicle compatibility matrix, and it does not establish that every car exposes every control identically. Treat the display in your own vehicle as the final check, especially for widget capacity and the location of Android Auto controls.

How to test customization without buying anything

The documented tasks are software settings. They do not require a new adapter, cable, replacement head unit or other physical purchase to unlock the controls described here.

  1. Park safely and connect the phone using the normal CarPlay or Android Auto setup already supported by the vehicle.
  2. For CarPlay, spend a few minutes in iPhone Settings arranging eligible icons and widgets.
  3. Reconnect and verify that the icon order and widget choices appear on the car display.
  4. Open CarPlay Settings and try wallpaper, appearance, Dashboard suggestions and album-art controls.
  5. For Android Auto, open the launcher, dashboard and recent-app areas to see whether that navigation model suits you.
  6. Try the dark theme and the documented phone accessibility options for bold or outlined text and reduced animations.
  7. Judge the result by the changes you actually need, not by the number of settings a platform lists.

Common problems and what to check

A CarPlay icon did not disappear

Check whether Apple provides the remove control for that icon. Only eligible icons can be removed. If the icon was moved or restored, reconnect the iPhone; Apple says changes appear the next time CarPlay connects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The widget arrangement looks different in another car

Apple ties widget-stack count to the vehicle display. A smaller or differently configured screen may show fewer stacks even when the iPhone settings are the same.

Android Auto does not show every app

Confirm that you are signed in to the Play Store and that personalization is enabled, as Google specifies for seeing all compatible apps. Also remember that an app must support Android Auto; installing a phone app alone does not establish that it will appear in the car launcher.

Text or animation changes are hard to notice

Bold text, outlined text and reduced animations are accessibility adjustments, not layout changes. Check them while parked and compare the connected display, rather than expecting icons or app positions to move.

A setting is unavailable while driving

Stop before changing configuration. Apple’s widget instructions specifically direct users to make changes from iPhone Settings when not driving, and Google’s accessibility guidance includes driving-safety constraints. The safest workflow is to configure both systems before setting off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the official guidance can—and cannot—answer

The evidence supports a clear comparison of documented controls. CarPlay has explicit settings for Home icons, widgets, wallpaper, appearance, Dashboard suggestions and album art. Android Auto has documented navigation areas, a launcher, quick controls, dark theme and phone accessibility choices.

It does not support a numerical score, a claim that one interface always takes fewer taps, or a universal statement that one platform feels more intuitive. No named statistic, benchmark or usability quotation accompanies these product instructions. The honest answer to “which is easier?” therefore has two parts: CarPlay is easier to customize if you mean more visible layout and appearance choices; Android Auto may be easier for someone whose desired changes are limited to theme, text, animation and quick access to apps.

A practical decision rule

  • Pick CarPlay if widgets, icon order, wallpaper, appearance, Dashboard suggestions or album-art visibility are central to your setup.
  • Pick Android Auto if dark theme, bold or outlined text, reduced animations, launcher access and dashboard navigation cover your needs.
  • Do not treat app installation as layout customization. Android Auto’s compatible-app catalog expands available services; it does not, by itself, prove that you can arrange the launcher freely.
  • Check the actual vehicle display. CarPlay widget capacity varies by screen, and the cited Android Auto guidance does not provide a complete cross-vehicle matrix.
  • Do not buy hardware solely for these settings. The documented controls are reached through phone settings or the in-car interface.
