Short answer: Android Auto does not mirror every speedometer app installed on your phone. A speed readout appears on the car screen only when the app is built for a permitted Android Auto category, has the required metadata and behavior, passes Google’s approval process, and receives its permissions on the phone. A GPS speedometer and a vehicle-data speedometer also measure different things, so their readings and accuracy can differ.
This guide explains which speedometer approaches can work, why a phone app may be missing from Android Auto, where to approve permissions, how GPS speed differs from cluster speed, and what to expect from mph and km/h settings.

What Android Auto can—and cannot—display
Android Auto is a projection system. It takes supported functions from a compatible Android phone and presents them through a compatible car infotainment system or aftermarket stereo. It is not a general-purpose mirror of the phone screen, and an app that works normally on the handset is not automatically available on the dashboard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle limits Android Auto apps to approved categories and requires appropriate metadata, predictable behavior, and safety compliance. Apps built for Android Auto must be submitted for approval before launch so they can be checked for safety and compatibility. A conventional phone-only speedometer can therefore remain invisible in the Android Auto launcher even when it has location permission and works perfectly on the handset.

Minimum phone and vehicle requirements
- The phone must run Android 9 (API level 28) or higher for Android Auto compatibility.
- The vehicle or aftermarket stereo must itself support Android Auto, either over USB or wirelessly according to that unit’s specifications.
- The speedometer application must be an Android Auto-approved app in a category that the platform permits. Installation from the phone’s app store is not proof that it is approved for the car display.
- Any location, vehicle-data, or overlay permission requested by the implementation must be granted before the readout can operate.
If the car connects successfully but no speedometer icon appears, the most likely explanation is platform approval or category support, not a defective GPS sensor.
Which speedometer approaches are possible?
There are three distinct paths people often call an “Android Auto speedometer.” They should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Approach | Data source | Where it normally appears | Permissions or approval | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPS speedometer app | Phone location/GPS measurements | Phone screen; only on the car if the app is approved for Android Auto | Location permission, commonly fine location | Signal quality, filtering, and app implementation affect the result |
| Vehicle or cluster speed app | Car-provided speed data through the car hardware APIs | Supported Android Auto or Android Automotive integrations | Platform car-speed permission and approved integration | Availability depends on vehicle, platform, and the API exposed |
| Aftermarket overlay | Usually phone GPS, sometimes another source | An overlay floating above Android Auto on a compatible aftermarket Android head unit | ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION and, for a floating window, SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW |
It is an overlay technique, not universal Android Auto projection, and should be configured while parked |
GPS-derived speed
A GPS speedometer calculates movement from successive location fixes. An open-source Android Auto Speed HUD example requests ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, uses LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, and requests SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW so its readout can float over Android Auto on supported aftermarket hardware. That example demonstrates a technical approach; it does not establish a universal accuracy guarantee or mean every GPS speedometer is approved for the dashboard.
Vehicle-provided speed
Car hardware APIs expose speed as a separate data path. The CarInfo API documents a speed listener, addSpeedListener, and distinguishes raw speed from display speed—the value shown on the car’s instrument cluster. Applications using this path need the platform’s car-speed permission. For Android Auto the documented permission is com.google.android.gms.permission.CAR_SPEED; Android Automotive OS uses android.car.permission.CAR_SPEED.
Those permission names are not interchangeable. An app written for projected Android Auto cannot assume it can use an Android Automotive OS permission, and a built-in Automotive app is not the same thing as a phone app projected to the car.

Why a speedometer works on the phone but not Android Auto
This behavior is usually intentional. Android Auto filters applications according to safety and compatibility rules rather than exposing every phone activity.
Common causes
- No Android Auto support: The developer released a phone app without an Android Auto service or approved category.
- Pending or failed approval: The app may have an integration but not the required approval for distribution to the car display.
- Wrong metadata or unstable behavior: Android Auto requires the app to declare its supported functions correctly and behave consistently in a driver-focused interface.
- Unsupported platform: A feature intended for Android Automotive OS may not work when the same package is projected from a phone.
- Permission not granted: The app can launch on the phone but cannot obtain location or car-speed data until the permission is approved.
- Head-unit limitations: An aftermarket unit may support Android Auto but not the overlay mechanism used by a particular HUD implementation.
What you can check
- Update the phone to Android 9 or later and install the latest available Android Auto components for that phone.
- Verify that the exact vehicle or stereo model supports Android Auto; support for Bluetooth audio alone is not enough.
- Open the Android Auto app list on the phone and check whether the speedometer is listed as a supported car app. If it is absent, reinstalling it usually cannot bypass category restrictions.
- Open the app on the phone and review its own compatibility or Android Auto instructions. A phone-only mode and a car-display mode may be separate features.
- Grant the requested permissions on the phone, reconnect Android Auto, and test while parked.
Where to grant Android Auto speedometer permissions
Runtime permissions are approved on the phone. On devices running Android 15, the head unit cannot accept runtime permission dialogs, so waiting for a prompt on the car screen will not work.
Recommended Free Tools
Location permission for GPS apps
- Install the speedometer and open it on the phone once.
- When Android asks for location access, choose the option that matches the app’s stated requirement. A GPS implementation such as the Speed HUD example requests fine location.
- If you previously denied access, open Settings > Apps > [the speedometer app] > Permissions > Location and change the setting there. The exact wording can vary by phone manufacturer and Android release.
- Return to the app, confirm that it can obtain a location fix, then connect to Android Auto.
Do not grant background or “all the time” access unless the app explicitly requires it and you understand the privacy implication. A foreground-only permission can be sufficient for an on-screen readout, but the app’s own documentation determines what it needs.
Vehicle-speed permission
If the application uses the CarInfo speed listener rather than GPS, its car-speed permission must be declared and approved by the platform. The Android Auto permission is com.google.android.gms.permission.CAR_SPEED. Android Automotive OS uses android.car.permission.CAR_SPEED. Users may not see a normal location-style switch for this capability; support is controlled by the car platform and the approved application integration.
Overlay permission on aftermarket Android head units
An overlay implementation may require SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW. On many Android devices this is managed under Settings > Apps > Special app access > Display over other apps, although menu names differ by manufacturer. Enable it only for the intended HUD application, configure the position and size while parked, and disable it if the readout covers navigation, warnings, or controls.

How accurate is an Android Auto speedometer?
There is no single official accuracy tolerance that applies to every Android Auto speedometer. A claim such as “always accurate to exactly X km/h” is not supported as a universal rule.

- Satellite visibility can change in tunnels, urban canyons, forests, garages, and under heavy cloud cover.
- The phone’s antenna, the quality of the location fix, and the app’s smoothing or averaging algorithm affect the displayed value.
- GPS speed is derived from movement over time, so it can lag during acceleration or braking and fluctuate when the signal is weak.
- Different applications may update at different intervals or discard low-confidence fixes.
GPS speed can be useful as an independent estimate, but the cited Speed HUD implementation’s use of GPS_PROVIDER is an implementation detail, not a promise that all conditions produce the same result.
Why vehicle and cluster speed are different
A vehicle-provided value comes from the car’s own data network and may be available as raw speed or display speed. The display speed is specifically the value shown on the instrument cluster. Cars can intentionally calibrate the cluster to avoid understating speed, so a cluster-linked application and a GPS application may not match exactly even when both are functioning correctly.
For legal compliance and driving decisions, follow the vehicle’s certified speed display and local law. Treat a third-party projected readout as supplementary information, not a replacement for the cluster.
Does Android Auto show mph or km/h?
There is no documented universal mph/km/h switch that every projected Android Auto speedometer must provide. Unit behavior depends on the application, the vehicle, and the platform.

App-controlled units
Some GPS applications expose a unit selector in their own settings. Look for Units, Speed unit, Measurement system, or a choice between mph and km/h while the app is open on the phone. If the car display is a projected version of that app, the setting may carry over; the app developer must define that behavior.
Vehicle-controlled units
The CarInfo documentation includes READ_CAR_DISPLAY_UNITS in the Android Automotive permission table. That indicates that a built-in Automotive application can read the vehicle’s display-unit setting when the platform grants the capability. It does not promise a universal unit-setting interface for every phone-projected Android Auto app.
When the units look wrong
- Check the speedometer app’s unit setting on the phone.
- Check the vehicle’s regional or instrument-cluster unit setting.
- Disconnect and reconnect Android Auto after changing either setting.
- Confirm that the number is actually speed and not another metric such as distance, altitude, or an unlabelled raw value.
- If the app offers no unit control and does not follow the vehicle, ask its developer which source it uses; Android Auto itself does not force one universal choice.
Android Auto projection versus Android Automotive OS
These names describe different architectures.
| Characteristic | Android Auto | Android Automotive OS |
|---|---|---|
| Where the app runs | On the Android phone and projects an approved interface to the car | On the vehicle’s built-in Android system |
| Phone requirement | Yes; supported phones run Android 9/API 28 or later | Not necessarily; the vehicle supplies the operating environment |
| Speed permission | com.google.android.gms.permission.CAR_SPEED |
android.car.permission.CAR_SPEED |
| Unit access | Depends on the projected app and vehicle integration | The platform documents vehicle display-unit access, including READ_CAR_DISPLAY_UNITS |
| App availability | Subject to Android Auto categories and approval | Subject to the vehicle maker’s platform and Automotive app policies |
Confusing the two platforms is a frequent source of failed permission requests and missing features. Check which operating system actually hosts the app before troubleshooting.
Practical setup checklist
- Identify the platform: Determine whether you are projecting from a phone with Android Auto or using Android Automotive OS built into the vehicle.
- Confirm compatibility: Check Android 9/API 28 or later on the phone and verify Android Auto support for the exact car or stereo.
- Verify approval: Make sure the speedometer is an approved Android Auto app, not merely a normal phone application.
- Grant permissions on the phone: Approve location for GPS, and follow the app’s instructions for any car-speed capability.
- Handle overlays carefully: On an aftermarket Android head unit, grant overlay access only if the implementation requires it and configure it while parked.
- Select units: Set mph or km/h in the app when available, then check the vehicle’s own display-unit setting.
- Test the data source: Compare the readout with the cluster in an open area, noting whether the application says GPS, raw vehicle speed, or display speed.
- Revoke or correct permissions: If the app shows no data, revisit phone permissions, reconnect Android Auto, and check whether the car exposes the required API.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The app is missing from the Android Auto launcher
Check approval and category support first. Android Auto intentionally blocks unsupported phone activities. If the developer has not released an approved car experience, there is no phone-side permission switch that can make it appear.
The app appears but shows no speed
Open it on the phone, verify location permission and a current GPS fix, then reconnect. For a vehicle-data implementation, confirm that the car and platform expose the required car-speed permission. A projected phone app cannot use an Automotive OS permission simply because the names sound similar.
Best Value
The readout is delayed or jumps
This is consistent with GPS signal loss, location filtering, or update intervals. Test outdoors with a clear view of the sky. If the app is supposed to use vehicle speed, determine whether it reports raw speed or display speed; those are separate API values.
The number is in the wrong unit
Check both the app’s unit selector and the vehicle’s regional setting. If neither offers a control, the implementation may choose its own units; Android Auto does not impose one universal mph/km/h behavior.
The permission dialog never appears on the car screen
Approve runtime permissions on the phone. This is required on Android 15 because the head unit cannot accept runtime permission requests.
Safety and privacy considerations
Configure applications, overlays, and unit settings before driving or while safely parked. A floating HUD can obscure navigation instructions or warning messages, and repeatedly handling the phone while moving creates a distraction.
Location permission reveals movement information. Grant only the access level the application needs, review whether it runs in the background, and remove access when you no longer use the speedometer. Vehicle-speed permissions can expose car data beyond a simple GPS estimate, so use applications from developers that explain their data handling and platform support.
What to expect from a “compatible” speedometer
Compatibility is a combination of four separate checks: the phone and vehicle meet Android Auto requirements; the app has an approved car experience; the correct permissions are available on the platform; and the app’s data source works in that vehicle. Passing one check does not guarantee the others.
The most dependable interpretation of a projected speedometer is therefore conditional: a GPS app can provide an estimate when it has a good location fix, while a vehicle-integrated app can expose raw or cluster display speed when the car grants the appropriate API. Neither path has one universal accuracy number or one universal unit control across all vehicles and applications.
