Android app archiving vs. uninstalling: what happens to your data and settings?

Archive an Android app when you want to reclaim space but keep its on-device data for a possible return. Android removes the installed software, permissions, temporary files and notifications, while retaining the app’s icon and data. Uninstalling removes the app and its app-specific files, preferences and databases. Photos, downloads and documents saved in shared storage can remain, and cloud-backed information depends on the app’s own account and backup policy.

Archive or uninstall: the practical difference

The choice is mainly about whether Android should preserve the app’s local data. Archiving is a reversible removal of the program itself. Uninstalling is a removal of the program and the data Android classifies as belonging specifically to that app.

What happens Archive Uninstall
Installed app software Removed to recover storage. Removed.
Icon Stays on the launcher in a dimmed state so you can identify and restore the app. Normally disappears as an installed app. If the icon is gone, Google says the app may have been deleted.
App data and local settings Google says app data is retained. App-specific files, preferences and databases are removed under Android’s documented storage behavior.
Temporary files Removed as part of archiving. Removed with the app’s app-specific storage.
Permissions and notifications Permissions are removed and notifications stop while the app is archived. The app is no longer installed; its installed-app permissions and notifications do not remain active.
Shared photos, media and documents The archive documentation does not define identical treatment for every shared file. Files stored outside app-specific locations can remain on the device.
Getting the app back Tap the faded icon, open the app’s App info page, or use its Play Store details page. The store, listing and free storage are required. Reinstall the app if it is still available. Reinstallation alone does not restore data removed by uninstalling.

Neither action should be treated as a universal rule for cloud accounts, subscriptions, server-side progress or online profiles. Those are controlled by the individual app. If the information matters, check that app’s account, backup or sync settings before uninstalling.

What Android removes when you archive an app

The program is removed, not the app’s local data

Archiving removes the installed software package so it can give storage back. Google describes the app’s data as retained, which is why an archive is useful for an app you expect to use again. The retained material is the app data on the device, not a promise that every item ever associated with the app is preserved.

The icon remains as a restoration shortcut

The launcher icon is dimmed rather than removed. It identifies the archived app and provides a visible way to bring it back. A dimmed icon is therefore not a broken installation: it is Android’s indication that the program is currently absent and can be downloaded again when the restoration requirements are met.

Permissions and notifications stop

Android removes the archived app’s permissions and stops its notifications. An archived messaging, shopping or social app cannot continue using its granted camera, location or other permissions while its software is absent, and it cannot deliver normal notifications until restored.

Temporary files are discarded

Google’s archive description includes temporary files among the material removed. This helps explain why archiving can save space even though the app’s data is retained: disposable working files are not part of the preserved installation state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoration may require permission review

Because permissions are removed during archiving, review the app’s permission page after it returns. The app may need access granted again before camera uploads, location features or other permission-dependent functions work as expected. The exact prompts depend on the app and your Android version.

What Android removes when you uninstall an app

App-specific storage is deleted

Android Developers documents the rule plainly: “When the user uninstalls your app, the files saved in app-specific storage are removed.” That includes files kept in locations reserved for the app rather than in storage shared with other apps or the user.

Preferences and databases are removed

Android’s storage documentation also lists an app’s preferences and databases as removed on uninstall. These commonly hold local settings, offline records, cached account state, downloaded indexes and other information the app needs to reconstruct its local environment. The exact contents vary by app, but you should assume app-private settings and databases will not survive.

Reinstalling is not a recovery operation

If you later install the same app again, Android gives it a new local installation. The app may recover information from its own online account or backup, but that is an app-specific behavior, not something guaranteed by Android’s uninstall process. Do not uninstall first and investigate backup options afterward if the local data is important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstall does not necessarily erase every trace of the app

Files in shared storage can be left behind even though the private installation is gone. That is why a phone can still contain a folder, photo or downloaded document associated with an uninstalled app. The remaining file is not evidence that the app’s preferences or database survived; those private records can already be deleted.

App-specific data is different from shared files

The word “data” covers several storage locations. Android’s uninstall rule applies to app-specific files; it does not mean every file the app ever opened is automatically erased.

App-private files

Files in app-specific storage, along with the app’s preferences and databases, are the material most at risk from uninstalling. These can include offline content, local drafts, internal indexes and settings that never leave the phone. Archiving is the safer choice when you need to preserve this local state.

Shared photos, videos and documents

Photos, videos, downloads and documents saved in shared storage can remain after an uninstall. Their continued presence does not guarantee that the old app will still recognize them or display them in the same way. A replacement app, a file manager or another compatible program may be needed to open them, and the app’s own catalog or database may have been deleted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before uninstalling a photo editor, scanner or document app, open a file manager and identify where the originals and exports are stored. Copy anything important to a location you recognize independently of that app. This protects the file itself even if the old app’s index, albums or editing history are removed.

Cloud accounts and synchronized progress

Android’s storage documentation does not establish how a particular service retains server-side information. An app may synchronize notes, game progress, messages or preferences to an account, or it may keep them only on the phone. Look for the app’s sign-in, backup, export or sync controls and confirm that synchronization has completed before uninstalling.

Being signed in is not the same as knowing every item is synchronized. Some apps keep drafts, downloaded material or device-only settings locally even when an account is present. If the app offers a last-sync indicator, backup history or export file, check it before choosing Uninstall.

How much space does archiving free?

Google does not provide a universal percentage or fixed amount of storage reclaimed by archiving. The result depends on the installed software and its temporary files. Archiving removes the program and temporary files while retaining app data, so the freed space can differ substantially from one app to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the app is restored, the software must be downloaded and installed again. Keep enough free space for that download and installation; preserving data does not reserve the space needed for the program itself. If the phone is nearly full, you may need to manage other storage before restoration can complete.

How to archive an app manually

Google’s documented manual route is in Android Settings. Labels can vary by manufacturer, but the sequence is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select the app you want to archive.
  4. Tap Archive.

If Archive is not shown, that control may not be supported for the app, the device or the Android release. Google notes that some archive controls require Android 15 or later and compatible hardware, so a missing button is not proof that you are looking in the wrong place.

After archiving, the app’s icon should appear dimmed. Opening it starts the restoration process rather than launching the program immediately. If you have unsaved work open, save or export it before archiving; archiving preserves app data, but it is not a substitute for a separate backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to restore an archived app

Use the dimmed icon

Tap the faded launcher icon. Android will attempt to download and reinstall the app while retaining the archived data. This route is the quickest when the icon is still on your home screen or in the app drawer.

Use App info

Open the archived app’s App info page from Settings and choose the available restore or install action. The wording can differ by device software.

Use the app’s Play Store details page

Find the app in Google Play and start the install or restore action from its details page. Restoration requires all of the following:

  • The app store must be installed on the device.
  • The app must still be offered in the store for that device and region.
  • The phone must have enough free storage to download and install the software.

If storage is too low, manage space first. An archive preserves data, but it cannot install software without room for the download and installation. If the developer has withdrawn the listing or it is no longer compatible with the device, the normal restore path may not be available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How automatic archiving works

Google Play can automatically archive unused apps when the feature is enabled. Google’s documented control is:

  1. Open Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Open General.
  5. Find Automatically archive apps and change the setting as needed.

To exclude one app from automatic archiving, Google says to open that app’s entry in Settings and turn off Manage app if unused. Menu wording and availability can differ by device. If an app is archived without you deliberately choosing it, check both the Play Store setting and that per-app control before assuming the data was uninstalled.

Automatic archiving is still an archive, not an uninstall: the icon and app data remain according to Google’s archive behavior, while the software, permissions, temporary files and notifications are removed. Restore the app before relying on it for alerts or offline access.

How to uninstall without losing what you need

Uninstalling is appropriate when you no longer need the app or deliberately want its app-private data removed. Before confirming, use this checklist:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sign in and verify that important information has synchronized to the app’s account, if the app offers one.
  • Use the app’s export or backup command for notes, projects, saves or other local work.
  • Copy shared photos, videos and documents to a location you can identify independently of the app.
  • Record any settings or account details that are not stored online.
  • Check whether the app is still available in Google Play if you might need it again.

Then uninstall through the device’s normal app-management control. The exact button and confirmation wording vary by Android manufacturer, so read the confirmation carefully and distinguish Uninstall from Clear storage.

For a work or school app

If the app is managed by an employer, school or device administrator, its backup and retention rules may be different from a personal app. Confirm where documents are stored and whether the account can be reactivated before removing the installation. Android’s local uninstall rule still applies to app-specific files, but the service’s online policy determines what can be recovered from its account.

Do not confuse archiving with “Clear storage”

Archiving and clearing storage solve different problems. Google says Clear storage permanently deletes all app data, while archiving preserves the app data and removes the installed software. If your goal is to free space while keeping local drafts, settings or offline records, clearing storage is the destructive option. If the app is malfunctioning and you intentionally want a clean start, clearing storage may be appropriate, but treat it as data deletion rather than a reversible archive.

Which option fits your situation?

Choose archive when you expect to return

Archive an app you use occasionally, need to remove temporarily, or want to keep ready for a later trip or project. It preserves the app’s on-device data while removing the software and background notifications. Plan for a download when you reopen it and keep enough storage available for that reinstall.

Choose uninstall when local data has no value

Uninstall when you have finished with the app, have verified the backup or export you need, or intentionally want its app-private files, preferences and databases removed. This is also the clear choice when retaining the local state would create an unwanted privacy or storage burden.

Pause before either action when the app is the only copy

If you cannot identify where a draft, save, document or account record is stored, do not uninstall. Archive first if the control is available, then investigate the app’s backup or export options. Archiving is not a substitute for a backup, but it avoids the immediate deletion of app-private data.

Use a simple example to decide

For a travel app you will use next month, archiving keeps its local state while removing the installed program until you need it. For a game whose progress is confirmed in an online account, uninstalling may be acceptable, but verify the account first. For a scanner containing unsent documents, export or copy the documents before uninstalling; the files may be shared, while the app’s index and drafts may be private.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common problems and precise fixes

There is no Archive button

Check the Android version and device compatibility. Google notes that some archive controls are limited to Android 15 and later or require compatible hardware. The app itself may also lack support for the control. In that case, do not use Clear storage as a substitute; decide whether ordinary uninstalling is acceptable after checking your backup.

The archived icon will not restore

Verify that Google Play is installed, the app still has a store listing for your device and region, and free storage is available. If any condition fails, Android cannot download the missing software even though the archived data remains on the phone.

The app disappeared instead of becoming dimmed

A missing icon may indicate that the app was uninstalled rather than archived. Look for it in Settings and Google Play. If it was uninstalled, recovery depends on the app’s own backup or synchronization; Android does not promise that reinstalling will recreate deleted app-private files.

Files remain after uninstalling

Remaining photos, downloads or documents may be in shared storage rather than app-specific storage. Their presence does not mean the app’s preferences or database survived. Review them with a file manager or another suitable app before deleting anything further.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Notifications stopped unexpectedly

An archived app cannot send normal notifications because its software and permissions have been removed. Restore it if you need alerts; changing notification settings alone will not replace the missing installation.

The restored app looks different

The app may update to a newer version during restoration. Its online service may also apply current account settings, while any local data that was not synchronized remains unavailable after an uninstall. If a restored archive does not show expected content, check the app’s account and backup controls before clearing storage or reinstalling again.

A safe decision checklist

  • Need the app again soon? Archive it rather than uninstalling.
  • Need its local drafts, offline data or settings? Archive, or export and back up before uninstalling.
  • Only need photos or documents? Confirm they are in shared storage and copy them independently.
  • Rely on an online account? Verify the app’s sync or backup status; Android does not define that service’s retention policy.
  • Want a completely clean reset? Clear storage or uninstall deliberately, understanding that app-private data can be permanently removed.
  • Was the app archived automatically? Check Play Store’s automatic-archive setting and the per-app Manage app if unused control.
  • Need notifications or offline access today? Restore the app first; an archive cannot deliver alerts or run its installed features.

The short version is simple: archive to remove the software while preserving the app’s local data; uninstall to remove the app and its app-specific data. Treat shared files and cloud information separately, because their fate depends on where they are stored and what the app’s own services do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does archiving an Android app delete its data?

No. Google says archiving retains the app’s data while removing the installed software, permissions, temporary files and notifications. The icon remains dimmed so you can restore the app.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Will uninstalling remove photos and documents used by the app?

Not necessarily. App-specific files, preferences and databases are removed, but photos, downloads and documents in shared storage can remain. The old app’s catalog or database may still be gone, so copy important files independently first.

Can I restore an archived app without Google Play?

Google’s documented restore routes use the faded icon, App info or the app’s Play Store details page. The store must be installed, the app must still be offered for the device and region, and enough free storage must be available.

Why is there no Archive option in Settings?

Some archive controls require Android 15 or later and compatible hardware, and support can vary by app or device. A missing button does not mean you should use Clear storage; check your Android version and backup options first.

Does an archived app still send notifications?

No. Archiving removes the app’s permissions and stops its notifications until the software is restored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop Google Play from automatically archiving one app?

In that app’s Settings entry, turn off Manage app if unused. You can also review Play Store → profile picture → Settings → General → Automatically archive apps. Menu names can vary by device.

Will reinstalling an uninstalled app bring back my settings and progress?

Not by itself. Uninstalling removes app-specific files, preferences and databases. Recovery depends on the app’s own account, backup or synchronization service, so verify those options before uninstalling.

Is archiving the same as clearing storage?

No. Archiving preserves app data and removes the software. Google says Clear storage permanently deletes all app data, so use it only when you intentionally want a clean reset.

The Bottom Line

Archive when you want space without immediately sacrificing local app data. Uninstall only after checking backups, exports and shared files, because Android removes app-specific storage, preferences and databases. Shared media and cloud records follow separate rules, and restoring an archive requires the app’s store listing, Google Play and enough free storage.
