Short answer: Android 16 mainly improves notification handling, hearing-device support, security protections and large-screen windowing. Android 17, as described for Nothing phones, adds a new split between Notifications and Quick Settings, expanded privacy controls, redesigned Recents, richer sharing and several Nothing OS 5.0 changes to the home screen, Glyph controls and Essential features.
The practical result depends on your exact Nothing model, region, carrier rollout and whether you are running the stable release or an Open Beta. Google’s Android feature announcements describe platform capabilities; Nothing’s Nothing OS 5.0 page is the relevant source for Nothing-specific features and timing.

Android 16 and Android 17 are not the same layer on a Nothing phone
A Nothing phone combines Google’s Android platform with Nothing’s own Nothing OS interface and applications. That distinction matters when comparing versions. Android 16 features such as Live Updates, automatic notification grouping, Advanced Protection and desktop windowing are platform features announced by Google. Nothing OS 5.0 features such as the refreshed home screen, Glyph Timer and Essential Space changes are Nothing’s additions delivered alongside Android 17.

What Android 16 changes in daily use
Google announced Android 16 on June 10, 2025. Its changes are most noticeable in notifications, accessibility, security and devices with larger screens. The details below come from Google’s Android 16 announcement, not from a Nothing-specific compatibility test.
Live notifications and automatic grouping
Android 16 introduces Live Updates for compatible delivery and rideshare applications. Instead of repeatedly opening an app to check a courier or driver, a supported app can keep an active status in the notification area. Compatibility is controlled by the app, so an Android 16 phone cannot create a Live Update for an app that has not implemented the required support.
Android 16 also groups notifications from a single app automatically. A busy messaging, shopping or travel app can therefore occupy less vertical space while still allowing you to expand the group and inspect individual alerts. The exact appearance can vary with Nothing OS’s notification styling and the application itself.

Better hearing-device calls and controls
For supported hearing devices, Android 16 improves call handling and adds native controls. Google describes an option to use the phone’s microphone during a call, which can make the caller’s voice clearer in noisy surroundings than relying only on a hearing aid’s microphones. The feature requires a compatible hearing device and phone implementation; it is not a universal improvement for every Bluetooth headset.
Advanced Protection and Identity Check
Advanced Protection is Google’s package of stronger device protections. Availability can vary by manufacturer and model, so its presence in Android 16 does not establish that it is enabled on every Nothing phone. Android 16 also lists Identity Check among its security features. These are protections at the Android platform level, while Nothing’s Android 17-era privacy controls change how permissions and indicators are presented to you.
Desktop windowing on compatible large screens
Android 16 brings desktop-style windowing to compatible tablets and other large-screen devices. Supported applications can run in resizable windows rather than one full-screen pane. This is significant for an Android tablet used as a workstation, but it is generally not a phone feature: a standard Nothing phone’s display does not become a desktop workspace merely because it receives Android 16.
Other platform changes
Google also lists HDR screenshots and adaptive refresh rate among Android 16 features. HDR screenshots can preserve a wider brightness and colour range when the display, screenshot viewer and sharing destination support it. Adaptive refresh rate lets the system vary refresh behaviour according to activity and power needs. Google’s platform list is not a promise that every item appears on every manufacturer’s build.

Separate Notifications and Quick Settings spaces
The most immediately visible navigation change is a split between Notifications and Quick Settings. Instead of treating the shade as one combined area, Nothing OS 5.0 provides separate spaces. That can make it faster to reach a Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth or brightness control without pushing past a long list of alerts, while notification review remains focused on messages and status updates.
Because this changes a core gesture and layout, expect a short adjustment period. Screenshots or instructions written for the previous combined shade may no longer match the controls on your phone.
More visible privacy indicators and permission controls
Nothing lists clearer privacy indicators and updated controls for camera, microphone and location access. The purpose is practical: you should be able to see more readily when sensitive sensors are in use and make permission decisions from a more prominent interface. The list does not establish that Android 17 is categorically safer than Android 16 on every Nothing model; security depends on the device build, enabled protections and app behaviour.
Quick Share with a QR-code or web-link route
Nothing’s Android 17 feature list describes Quick Share for nearby Android devices and a QR-code or web-link option for sharing with an iPhone or another device. Nearby Android transfers remain the direct route when both devices support Quick Share. The QR or link flow is useful when the recipient is outside that nearby-device setup, but it still depends on the recipient opening the link and accepting the transfer.
Screen recording, emoji, dark theme and audio changes
Nothing names improved screen recording, Noto 3D emoji, an expanded Dark Theme, separate Assistant volume and brighter HDR content. These are separate user-visible items rather than one single “Android 17 mode.” Screen recording improvements affect capture controls or output; the emoji and theme changes affect appearance; separate Assistant volume lets you adjust assistant speech independently from other audio; and brighter HDR content applies only where the display and content support HDR.
Redesigned Recents
The Recents screen is redesigned in Nothing OS 5.0’s Android 17 feature list. Recents is where you switch between or dismiss recently used apps, so the change affects muscle memory more than app compatibility. Android 16’s desktop windowing, by contrast, targets compatible large screens. On a Nothing phone, the redesigned Recents screen is the more relevant multitasking change.
Nothing OS 5.0 changes that are separate from Android 17
Nothing presents the following as Nothing OS 5.0 improvements delivered alongside Android 17. They should not be described as standard Android 17 features because another manufacturer’s Android 17 interface may not contain them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Home-screen design and editing
- A refreshed home screen uses wallpaper-aware colours.
- Tinted icons and transparent widgets change the visual relationship between wallpaper and controls.
- Typography, icons, layouts and motion are updated across the interface.
- New clock faces add additional lock-screen or home-screen presentation choices.
- Multi-app home-screen editing lets you change several app placements in one operation rather than repeating the same action for each icon.
These changes are cosmetic and workflow-oriented. They can make the phone feel different immediately after installation without changing the capabilities of the apps themselves.

Glyph controls and time management
Nothing lists a Glyph Timer and consolidated Glyph controls. The Glyph Timer is intended for timed actions using the phone’s rear light interface, while consolidated controls put related Glyph settings in one place. Nothing also names Collector and Away Time, two features tied to its own phone experience. Their availability can depend on the model’s Glyph hardware and software support.
Essential Space and Essential Voice
Essential Space and Essential Voice receive improvements in the Nothing OS 5.0 plan. Nothing says some Essential Space changes arrive separately through Google Play, so the operating-system update is not necessarily the only installation event. Nothing also says some features remain in development or limited beta. A phone can therefore show the Android 17 base while an individual Essential feature is still unavailable or changing.
Essential Apps Builder
Essential Apps Builder is another Nothing OS feature, not a general Android 17 capability. It is designed to let users create or configure Essential-style apps within Nothing’s software environment. Nothing’s page does not provide a universal compatibility matrix or a measured productivity gain, so treat it as an additional tool whose exact behaviour may evolve.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Nothing describes redesigned Bluetooth controls in Quick Settings, faster interaction and improved memory management. The Bluetooth redesign is a concrete navigation change. “Faster” and “improved memory management” are Nothing’s product descriptions, not an independent benchmark: the available official material does not provide a controlled Android 16-versus-Android 17 speed, battery-life or reliability measurement for Nothing phones.

Will your Nothing phone get Android 17?
Nothing’s published schedule is indicative, phased by region and carrier where applicable, and subject to change. The page states that timings are indicative and subject to change; the entries below do not include a year alongside each date, so they should not be silently converted into a calendar-year promise.
| Nothing model | Indicative Nothing OS 5.0 general release |
|---|---|
| Phone (3) | From October 12 |
| Phone (4a) Pro | Early November |
| Phone (4a) | Early November |
| Phone (3a) Pro | Early November |
| Phone (3a) | Early November |
| Phone (2a) | Mid-November |
| Phone (2a) Plus | Mid-November |
| Phone (3a) Lite | Late December |
| Phone (4b) | Mid-January |
| CMF Phone 2 Pro | Mid-January |
The schedule is not a same-day guarantee. A carrier-branded handset or a phone in a different region can receive the package later than the indicative window. Nothing also says Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 have reached the end of major software support and will not receive Nothing OS 5.0.
How to check and install the update
Use Nothing’s support guidance for the update path: Settings > System > System updates. Before starting, connect to Wi‑Fi and charge the phone to at least 50 percent, as Nothing Support recommends.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Select System updates.
- Let the phone check for an available Nothing OS 5.0 package.
- Read the version notes and confirm that the listed model and region match your phone.
- Download over Wi‑Fi, then install when the battery is at least 50 percent or the phone is connected to power.
- Allow the phone to restart and finish optimizing apps before judging battery life or responsiveness.
If no update appears, that usually means the staged rollout has not reached your device, carrier or region yet; it does not by itself prove that your model is unsupported. Check the model against Nothing’s schedule and try again later.

Should you install the Nothing OS 5.0 Open Beta?
Choose the Open Beta only if early access is more important to you than stability. Nothing labels the software pre-release and warns about possible bugs and effects on stability, battery life and performance. Beta features can also remain in development or limited release, particularly within Essential Space.
Back up before enrolling
Back up photographs, messages, authenticator data, files and any other information you cannot replace. Nothing warns that the rollback process can erase all phone data and that beta installation or rollback may require a factory reset. A backup is therefore a requirement for risk management, not an optional convenience.
When the stable release is the better choice
- Your phone is a primary work or safety device.
- You rely on dependable battery behaviour or Bluetooth accessories.
- You do not have a tested, restorable backup.
- You need a feature to work consistently rather than to experiment with it.
Wait for the general release if any of those conditions apply. The stable rollout can still be phased, but it avoids the additional bugs and rollback risk associated with pre-release software.
What the changes feel like in common situations
Checking a delivery while handling other alerts
On Android 16, a supported delivery app can expose a Live Update and notifications from that app can be grouped. On Android 17 with Nothing OS 5.0, you also have separate spaces for notifications and Quick Settings. You can check the delivery in the notification area, then open controls such as Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth without mixing the two tasks in one shade.
Sending a file to a friend with a different phone type
For a nearby Android recipient, use Quick Share. If the recipient is using an iPhone or another device outside the nearby Android flow, Nothing lists a QR-code or web-link option. Confirm the recipient can open the link and accept the transfer before leaving the sharing screen.
Making a call with hearing assistance
Android 16’s supported hearing-device improvements can provide native controls and an option to use the phone microphone in noisy locations. Check that both the hearing device and Nothing handset support the relevant profile; the Android version alone cannot guarantee the option.
Switching among several apps
Android 17-era Nothing OS 5.0 changes the Recents design, so the position and appearance of app cards may differ from Android 16. On a compatible large-screen device, Android 16 desktop windowing is the more consequential multitasking feature because it enables resizable windows. A phone user should not expect tablet-style windows simply from the Android 17 update.
Using Glyph and Essential features
The Glyph Timer, consolidated Glyph controls, Collector, Away Time and Essential improvements are Nothing OS features. They may be absent on models without the required Glyph hardware, delivered through Google Play at a different time, or limited while a feature remains in beta.
Best Value
What cannot be claimed from the available evidence
There is no independent, model-specific controlled comparison establishing that Android 17 is faster, lasts longer on a charge or is more reliable than Android 16 on Nothing phones. Nothing uses promotional language about smoother or faster interaction, but no comparative statistic is supplied. Your experience can vary with model, storage load, app versions, network conditions and background activity.
It is also not accurate to say that every Android 17 feature listed by Google will appear on every Nothing phone. Nothing’s page is the source for the features it plans to deliver in Nothing OS 5.0, while Google’s announcements describe the broader Android platform. Keep those scopes separate when troubleshooting or explaining an update to another user.
Common update problems and sensible fixes
The update is not listed
Confirm the exact model, region and carrier status, then compare it with Nothing’s indicative schedule. Keep Wi‑Fi enabled and check Settings > System > System updates again later. A phased rollout can make two otherwise identical phones show different availability.
A feature mentioned by Nothing is missing
Check whether it is a Nothing OS feature, an Android platform feature or an Essential component delivered through Google Play. Verify that the phone model has the required hardware, install pending Google Play updates and read the release notes for your build. Some features remain in development or limited beta.
Battery or performance seems different after installation
Allow the phone to complete its post-update app optimization and observe normal use before drawing conclusions. If you installed an Open Beta, remember Nothing’s warning about possible stability, battery-life and performance effects. Do not treat a short-term change as proof of a general Android 16-versus-Android 17 performance difference.
You want to leave the beta
Follow Nothing’s rollback instructions only after creating a complete backup. The rollback can erase all phone data and may require a factory reset. Make sure you can restore essential accounts and files before proceeding.
Bottom line for Nothing owners
Android 16 is the more consequential version for platform-level notification behaviour, hearing-device support, security protections and compatible large-screen windowing. Android 17’s Nothing implementation changes the daily interface more visibly: the notification shade is separated from Quick Settings, privacy controls are more prominent, Quick Share gains a QR or link route, Recents is redesigned, and Nothing OS 5.0 adds its own home-screen, Glyph, Essential and Bluetooth updates. Check your model and rollout status before expecting any specific feature, and choose the stable release unless you are prepared for beta bugs and a potentially data-erasing rollback.
