A family preparing foundations for a house in Ninh Binh, Vietnam, uncovered ceramic jars buried about 30 centimetres below the surface on 11 October 2026. Specialists preliminarily identify the objects as Tran Dynasty household wares from the 13th–14th centuries (1225–1400). The provincial museum formally received six jars and several fragments, while a separate report from Tuoi Tre estimated that roughly 20 objects remained relatively intact.
Where and how the discovery happened
Do Van San’s family was probing soil for house foundations at the Cua Bac 2 resettlement area in Ninh Nhat 3 residential quarter, Hoa Lu ward, Ninh Binh province, when workers struck ceramic objects. The jars were approximately 30 centimetres beneath the surface.

The family voluntarily stopped construction, carried out preliminary cleaning and promptly notified local authorities and relevant agencies. That response allowed the Ninh Binh provincial museum and cultural-heritage specialists to inspect the find, document its location and take custody of the recovered material.

What the jars are and how old they may be
The Ninh Binh Department of Culture and Sports and museum specialists preliminarily identify the objects as household wares made during Vietnam’s Tran Dynasty. That dynasty dates from 1225 to 1400, placing the reported date in the 13th or 14th century.
The jars are fine stoneware fired at high temperature. Specialists recorded two principal forms:

Some pieces have incised lines or combed decoration. These observations support a preliminary period identification, but no published laboratory analysis or final archaeological dating has been reported. The Tran attribution should therefore be read as an expert assessment, not a definitive scientific result.

The published measurements are field records attributed to the Ninh Binh Department of Culture and Sports and the Vietnam News Agency in 2026. They describe the recovered pieces as documented, rather than providing a complete catalogue of every object that may have been present.

Why officials did not order an emergency excavation
Only soil was found inside the jars. Inspectors reported no associated architectural remains or other artefacts, and the objects lay above the natural soil layer. On that preliminary evidence, officials said the location did not then meet the conditions for an emergency archaeological excavation.
This decision does not establish that the deposit lacks historical importance. It means that, at the time of inspection, the evidence did not indicate a wider buried structure or intact archaeological context requiring immediate excavation. It also remains possible that further objects could appear as construction proceeds, which is why monitoring and heritage safeguards were proposed.

How many objects were found?
The formal museum record covers six jars and several fragments. A separate Tuoi Tre account described roughly 20 relatively intact objects in an area of about three square metres and said the jars appeared upside down and stacked. Those figures are not directly reconciled in the available reporting: the museum custody figure is the confirmed number received by officials, while the larger estimate describes what the newspaper observed or reported at the findspot.

The provincial museum took custody of the six recorded jars and fragments for documentation and safeguarding. The Department of Culture and Sports proposed that construction be allowed to resume while heritage specialists continued to protect the objects and monitor the site under Vietnam’s Law on Cultural Heritage.

No museum-display schedule, final conservation report or public catalogue entry has been announced. The available accounts also do not establish the jars’ original owner, their exact production kiln or the reason they were placed in rows.
Local historical context
The construction site is about 2 kilometres from A Nau Pagoda and about 1 kilometre from Duc Thanh Temple, locations associated in the reports with the Tran period. Their proximity helps explain why specialists considered a medieval date plausible, but no evidence links the jars directly to either monument.
Ninh Binh has an active archaeological record. A 2025 provincial heritage report mentioned excavations at Thanh Dền and Mán Bạc, but those projects are separate from this house-construction discovery and cannot be used as evidence about the jars’ provenance or date.

What is established—and what is still unknown
- Established so far: the find occurred during foundation work on 11 October 2026; the objects are ceramic stoneware; six jars and fragments entered museum custody; and specialists made a preliminary Tran Dynasty household-ware identification.
- Not yet established: a laboratory-confirmed date, a complete object count, the original function of the deposit, its provenance, any associated settlement or building, and whether additional artefacts remain underground.
The family’s decision to stop work and report the discovery preserved the objects for professional assessment. Further interpretation will depend on documentation, conservation and any additional evidence recovered under the applicable heritage rules.
