Ancient DNA from bovine bone fragments found at Denisova Cave and nearby sites in Siberia has revealed a previously unknown yak-like mitochondrial lineage. The 2025 study does not describe a newly discovered intact animal or establish a new species; it identifies a branch of maternal genetic history distinct from the mitochondrial diversity of living yaks.
What did researchers find at Denisova Cave?
Researchers screened bovine bones from Denisova Cave in Siberia’s Altai region and nearby paleontological sites, then recovered mitochondrial genomes from some of the ancient material. They identified a yak-like lineage that the paper describes as a previously unknown sister lineage to present-day yak mitogenome diversity. “Sister” means the sampled lineage is a close evolutionary relative of the living-yak mitochondrial group, not that it was necessarily a direct ancestor of modern yaks.

The headline shorthand “extinct bovine” refers to this lost genetic lineage. The evidence comes from DNA in bone fragments, not a complete animal, and the study does not formally name a new species. The authors’ 2025 paper in Genome Biology and Evolution states: “The yak-like mitochondrial lineage identified in this study represents a previously unknown lineage sister to present-day yak mitogenome diversity.”
Which other bovine lineages appear in the study?
The ancient-DNA results also include bison assigned to mitochondrial clade X and rarer aurochs. In the study material, yak-like mitochondrial genomes were common, bison were represented next, and aurochs were less frequent. These are observations about the analyzed samples; they do not establish how abundant each animal was across the wider region or Ice Age landscape.

The researchers interpret the findings as evidence that all three taxa carried genetic diversity not represented in living populations. That conclusion concerns the lineages detected in their samples, not every bovine population that lived in mid-latitude Asia.
How old is the yak-like lineage?
The paper reports molecular tip-date estimates for 10 ancient yak-like mitogenomes. Their mean estimates span from about 300–243 thousand years ago, corresponding to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 8, to about 57–29 thousand years ago, corresponding to MIS 3. Those are ranges of molecular estimates, not a single date for the lineage or for every bone.

Molecular tip dating is one way to estimate when sampled genetic lineages existed or diverged. The paper also discusses direct radiocarbon dating and the cave’s stratigraphy, which are separate forms of age evidence. They should not be collapsed into one exact age for the newly identified lineage.

Mitochondrial DNA tracks a lineage passed through the maternal line. It can reveal that ancient bones belonged to a genetic branch missing from the mitochondrial diversity of living yaks, but it does not by itself describe the animal’s full genome, appearance, behavior, or exact species status. The study’s result is therefore a genetic discovery, not a complete biological reconstruction.

Nor is a cave sample a census of the region’s ancient herds. The bones analyzed represent the material recovered and studied at Denisova Cave and nearby sites. Their relative frequency in that sample cannot be treated as a direct measure of how common each bovine was throughout Siberia or mid-latitude Asia.

The findings show that bovine mitochondrial diversity in Ice Age mid-latitude Asia was broader than the lineages represented among living animals. Identifying those lost branches helps researchers reconstruct how animal populations and genetic diversity changed over time, while also highlighting the limits of what can be inferred from fragmented remains and mitochondrial evidence alone.
