An expert appraisal of an ancient coin starts with attribution and comparison, then weighs the evidence from its strike, surfaces, style, metal, weight and provenance. The result may be three separate opinions: what the coin appears to be, whether it is authentic, and what it might bring in a particular market. Those conclusions require different levels of examination, so an identification service is not automatically an authentication or valuation service.
What an ancient coin appraisal actually covers
“Appraisal” is often used to describe several different jobs. Before sending a coin anywhere, decide which answer you need:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Identification or attribution: the issuing culture or category, ruler or issuer, approximate date, denomination, composition, designs and other cataloguing details.
- Authentication: an opinion about whether the object is ancient and genuine rather than modern, altered or counterfeit.
- Market valuation: an estimate of what the coin could sell for under stated conditions, such as a private sale, auction or insurance purpose.
A museum may identify an object without authenticating it or assigning a price. The British Museum’s Money and Medals Department states: “We do not provide valuations or certificates of authentication – if you require this advice, please consult a dealer or auctioneer.” It also says it may decline to comment on some ancient coins with uncertain provenance or provenance that conflicts with national or international law. Ask every provider to define the service in writing rather than assuming that “identification” includes the other two conclusions.

How specialists examine an ancient coin
1. Attribution: establishing what the coin is
The first stage is comparison with established types and references. An attribution may record the broad category or issuing culture, date, ruler or issuer, metal, denomination, weight, obverse and reverse designs, distinguishing features and pedigree. These are the kinds of fields described in NGC Ancients’ attribution guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Attribution is not always a single permanent label. More than one attribution can be current, and scholarship can revise a date, mint, ruler or interpretation. A careful report identifies the reference used and explains why the coin fits that type. If the evidence supports only a broad culture or period, a responsible specialist should say so instead of forcing a precise ruler or date.
2. Strike, surface and style: the “Three S’s”
Ancient coins were struck by hand with engraved dies, so specialists assess three related characteristics:
- Strike: how completely and evenly the designs transferred from the dies to the blank. Weak areas can result from the striking process and do not, by themselves, prove a coin is fake.
- Surface: the texture and preservation of the metal, including effects of circulation, burial, recovery and later conservation. Scratches, deposits, smoothing, tooling, polishing, edge work and other alterations can affect both authenticity and value.
- Style: whether the portraits, lettering, symbols and overall execution resemble appropriate examples from the proposed series. Because each die was hand engraved, genuine coins can show considerable variation within one issue; comparisons must use relevant dies, mints and periods.
These observations work together. A convincing style cannot erase suspicious surfaces, and an attractive surface cannot compensate for a design that does not match the proposed issue. Specialists normally compare the coin with documented examples rather than relying on a single visual impression.

Weight is recorded in grams and can help with attribution, authenticity assessment and academic study. A scale reading is one piece of evidence, not a verdict: a counterfeit can be made to match a published weight, while a genuine coin can lose metal through wear, corrosion or later damage. Record the coin’s weight and diameter for the specialist, including the measuring conditions if practical. Do not treat a matching number as proof of genuineness.

4. Metal and other scientific evidence
Non-destructive elemental and isotope analysis can sometimes add information about a coin’s metal, possible source and date context. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes these methods as research tools for ancient coins. They are specialized examinations, not routine guarantees, and they cannot answer every authenticity question for every coin. A provider should explain what test is proposed, what it can establish, and what uncertainty remains before any analysis is performed.
5. Provenance and documentation
Provenance is the documented ownership and publication history of an object. Gather old tickets, invoices, auction references, collection records, export or import papers and other ownership documentation. These records can help place a coin in context, trace its history and support a pedigree on a professional label.
Documentation is not a guarantee of authenticity or legality. The American Numismatic Society’s collecting guidance warns readers to scrutinize vague or unverified collection claims. NGC Ancients notes that pedigree discovery or verification is not included in its grading fee and that submitters generally need to provide the documents needed for a pedigree to appear on a label. A story such as “from an old European collection” is not equivalent to a dated, checkable record.

Ancient counterfeits can be sophisticated. The Swiss National Museum notes that recognizing them requires detailed knowledge of historical minting and that modern counterfeiters may themselves possess strong numismatic knowledge. Plausible weight, attractive patina or an apparently old appearance is therefore not enough. The specialist looks for a coherent combination of die style, fabric, striking characteristics, surface behavior, metal evidence and documented history.

Why appearance alone cannot establish authenticity
Photographs are useful for an initial opinion, but lighting, focus, color balance and image processing can hide important evidence. A physical examination allows the specialist to inspect surfaces at suitable magnification, assess the edge and fabric, take an independent weight and diameter reading, and compare the object with reference material. An image-only review should be labeled as preliminary and should not be represented as a certificate of authenticity.
Patina deserves particular caution. Natural burial products, stable corrosion, artificial patina and later chemical treatment can look similar in a photograph. Cleaning, smoothing or adding a coating may remove evidence and reduce value. Leave the coin as found until a qualified specialist has examined it.
Prepare the coin before contacting an expert
- Photograph both sides clearly. Use even, diffuse light, keep the camera parallel to the coin and include enough resolution for lettering and symbols. Keep the original files.
- Record measurements. Weigh the coin in grams with a digital gram scale and measure its diameter. Write down the readings rather than relying on memory.
- Transcribe visible evidence. Note any letters, symbols, portrait features, animals, buildings, borders or unusual marks. If you cannot read the script, describe its location and appearance.
- Collect paperwork. Assemble old tickets, invoices, auction listings, collection notes, photographs, inheritance records and ownership documents. Preserve the original wording, dates and seller names.
- Describe known history honestly. Separate what you personally know from what you were told. Do not fill gaps with an assumed famous collection or an estimated date.
- Do not clean or alter the coin. Polishing, scraping, chemical treatment or attempts to improve the patina can destroy diagnostic evidence and change the specialist’s assessment.
This preparation helps an expert decide whether an in-person examination is warranted; it does not replace that examination.

| Decision point | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Identification versus authentication versus valuation | Which conclusions are included, and which are expressly excluded? A museum identification may provide only an attribution. |
| Image review versus physical examination | Will the coin be handled and inspected, or will the opinion rely only on supplied photographs? |
| Reference basis | Which catalogues, die studies, metallurgical comparisons or comparable specimens support the attribution? |
| Condition and alterations | Does the report discuss strike, surfaces, style, cleaning, tooling, damage and conservation? |
| Provenance work | Is pedigree research included, or must you supply and verify the documents yourself? |
| Written scope and fees | What will you receive, what does it cost, and what happens if the coin is returned as undetermined or suspected counterfeit? |
| Specialist expertise | Does the examiner regularly handle the relevant culture, period, denomination and language? |
Fees and terms vary by provider and are not universal. Obtain them directly from the service, including shipping, insurance, return procedures and whether scientific testing requires separate authorization.
How to read the final report
A useful report separates observations from conclusions. Look for the proposed attribution, the references or comparators used, weight and measurements, a discussion of strike, surface and style, any noted alteration, the confidence or uncertainty of the opinion, and a clear statement about whether authentication and valuation were included.
If a report says “attributed to” or “consistent with,” that wording may indicate an identification opinion rather than a guarantee that the coin is genuine. “Genuine” should be understood within the provider’s stated terms and examination method. A market estimate should identify the assumed market and condition; it is not a timeless price and can change with venue, demand, legal restrictions and new information.
Provenance, ownership and legal caution
A traceable history is valuable because it documents context, but it does not prove authenticity. Conversely, a coin lacking paperwork is not automatically counterfeit; it simply carries less documented history. Do not invent or embellish a pedigree, and do not assume that a long-held family coin has unrestricted sale or export rights.

Ancient objects can be subject to national cultural-property laws, import rules and the policies of museums, dealers and auction houses. If the coin’s origin is uncertain, disclose that uncertainty to the examiner. Some institutions will not offer an opinion when the available history raises legal or ethical concerns.
Where to seek a valuation
For a price opinion, seek a specialist dealer, auctioneer or appraiser who handles ancient coins and states whether the estimate is for auction, private sale, insurance or another purpose. Ask whether the same person is also offering to buy the coin; a conflict does not automatically invalidate an opinion, but it should be disclosed so you can interpret the estimate appropriately.
For authentication, favor a service that physically examines the coin and explains its reference basis and treatment of uncertain cases. For a museum or academic identification service, confirm in advance whether it will address only attribution. You may need separate providers for identification, authentication and valuation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a plausible weight, patina or photograph proves the coin is genuine.
- Confusing a catalogue attribution with a market valuation.
- Paying for pedigree research without checking whether the service includes it.
- Cleaning or polishing the coin before examination.
- Repeating an unverifiable “famous collection” story as established provenance.
- Quoting a museum identification as an authentication certificate.
- Expecting a scientific test to provide a universal yes-or-no answer.
- Using a general modern-coin grading assumption when no universal ancient-coin grading scale has been established for the service.
The practical takeaway
The strongest appraisal is a documented chain of reasoning: a defensible attribution, appropriate comparisons, analysis of strike, surface and style, a recorded weight, consideration of metal and counterfeit indicators, and transparent provenance. Tell the specialist exactly whether you need identification, authentication, valuation or all three, and verify the scope before sending the coin. That approach produces a more useful answer than relying on appearance, a single measurement or an undocumented ownership story.
