What is Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey?
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a third-person, open-world survival game from Panache Digital Games, published by Private Division. It begins in Neogene Africa approximately 10 million years ago and follows a clan across generations rather than placing the player in a conventional modern setting.
The game is built around three connected priorities:
- Explore: investigate an unfamiliar African environment, discover resources and identify dangers.
- Expand: establish territory, grow the clan and bring new members into the group.
- Evolve: preserve discoveries and abilities by passing them to later generations.
Individual choices affect which attributes and knowledge survive into the next generation, so two clans can develop along different paths.

What do you actually do in the game?
Manage everyday survival
Survival is an active responsibility. Clan members must eat, drink and sleep while avoiding predators and dangerous weather. Resources and hazards are part of the routine, not just occasional combat encounters.
Build a social group
Players form bonds and families, recruit new clan members and control different individuals within the clan. Reproduction and family relationships matter because the group’s future depends on which knowledge, traits and abilities are carried forward.
Explore and handle predators
Expeditions take the clan into unfamiliar territory. The announcement specifically highlights intimidating predators, giving players a way to manage threats during exploration rather than treating every encounter as a straightforward fight.

Make discoveries that outlast one character
The central progression system is generational. A discovery or useful ability can influence the next generation, while poor decisions or an unprepared clan can limit what is retained. That structure makes the clan—not a single hero—the long-term focus.

Patrice Désilets co-founded Panache Digital Games and leads the studio as its creative director. Take-Two’s May 23, 2019 publisher release identifies him as the “original creative director of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.”
That background explains why the Switch 2 announcement is attracting attention, but Ancestors is not an Assassin’s Creed sequel or spin-off. Its premise is a prehistoric survival and evolution simulation focused on experimentation, social organization and generational change. Désilets described Panache’s aim as providing “an experience no player has ever lived before.”
