Survive the opening hours by treating Ancestors as a cautious learning game, not a race across the map. Establish a safe camp near water and a sleeping spot, use your senses before every move, practice climbing and landing in familiar trees, and repeat low-risk actions until neuronal abilities become reliable. Only then take longer expeditions, change generations, or attempt an evolutionary leap.
What Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is asking you to do
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a third-person open-world survival game from Panache Digital Games. You guide a hominid clan beginning in Africa 10 million years ago. The Steam listing describes a journey spanning 10 million to 2 million years ago, while the publisher summarizes the core loop as “Explore, Expand, Evolve to advance their clan to the next generation.” Your progress is therefore both personal and collective: one ape learns an action, the clan develops neuronal abilities, generations carry those abilities forward, and Evolution Feats push the timeline toward later hominid stages.

The game does not give a first-time player a conventional mission list that explains every danger. It expects you to observe, experiment, and remember what went wrong. A safe route, a dependable food source, and a practiced escape can be more valuable than a spectacular discovery made too early. Your main objective in the first several hours is to create a repeatable survival routine before you chase distant landmarks or dangerous predators.

1. Make water and sleep your anchors
Keep the starting settlement close to a dependable water source and a sleeping spot. Before leaving, make sure the ape you are controlling is fed, hydrated, and rested. Water and rest are not merely conveniences; they determine how much margin you have when a route takes longer than expected or a fight leaves you injured.
Use the settlement as a known reset point. Short trips let you learn nearby trees, branches, rocks, plants, and paths without risking a long return journey. If your stamina or health begins to fall noticeably, turn back while the route is still familiar. Returning early is a successful expedition, not wasted time.
2. Activate your senses before crossing unknown ground
Use the game’s sensory view before moving into a new area. Identify edible resources, usable objects, landmarks, and signs of predators. Pausing to inspect the surroundings gives you information that movement alone cannot provide: you can choose a route with more branches, notice a potential threat, and mark a place worth revisiting.
Make a habit of sensing from a secure branch or the ground near camp before climbing farther. If a location contains several useful objects, remember its position relative to a landmark so that you can return without wandering while exhausted.
3. Practice movement where a mistake is survivable
Falls are among the fastest ways to turn a routine outing into a clan emergency. In familiar trees, practice climbing, branch transitions, jumps, and landings before attempting a long canopy route. Learn the timing of each movement rather than holding a direction and hoping the ape catches the next branch.
Early practice should happen close to camp, with a clear return path below. A successful jump teaches you the movement pattern; a failed jump teaches you the height and angle to avoid. Do not treat a new ability as proof that every tree is now safe. Terrain, branch spacing, fatigue, and landing position still matter.
4. Build neuronal development with ordinary objects
Inspect, gather, and modify safe objects repeatedly. Food handling, basic tool work, sensory use, and movement all contribute to neuronal development. Use common materials near the settlement so that an experiment does not cost a valuable adult or strand an infant far from protection.

When you discover an interaction, repeat it until you understand what it changes and how reliably you can perform it. The purpose of early crafting is not to fill an inventory; it is to turn unfamiliar actions into dependable skills that will help on later expeditions.

5. Keep vulnerable clan members close
Infants and exposed clan members should remain near camp until the surrounding area is understood. Their presence can make a risky route harder to manage, and losing a vulnerable member removes future population and learning capacity. Take experienced, healthy adults on reconnaissance and return before fatigue or injury makes the trip dangerous.
Once a nearby route is safe, expand outward in small stages. Each new safe area becomes another platform for future gathering and exploration.
Why early deaths happen and how to interrupt the spiral
The opening hazards are interconnected. Falls, predator attacks, bleeding, poison, hunger, thirst, exhaustion, and untreated injuries can combine until an otherwise survivable problem becomes fatal. A fall can leave you injured; an injury slows or weakens the return trip; the delayed return causes thirst or exhaustion; and the weakened ape is then easier prey.
| Hazard | Typical warning | Immediate response | Prevention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fall or bad landing | Sudden injury, loss of health, or a broken route | Stop climbing, assess the return path, and retreat by the safest familiar surface | Practice branch timing and landings near camp; avoid blind jumps |
| Predator attack | Threat presence, chase, or forced encounter | Use a known escape route and avoid extending the fight while injured | Sense before entering cover or unfamiliar ground; travel with a prepared adult |
| Bleeding or venom | Health decline after an attack or dangerous plant/animal contact | Leave the area, seek safety, and prioritize recovery instead of exploration | Do not experiment with unknown hazards during a long expedition |
| Stomach trouble or poison | Food-related illness or worsening condition | Stop testing questionable items and return to known safe resources | Introduce unfamiliar foods in small, controlled experiments near camp |
| Hunger or thirst | Depleted needs and shrinking endurance | Abandon the objective and head for known food or water | Begin fed and hydrated; keep trips short enough to include the return |
| Exhaustion | Low stamina, slower recovery, or inability to escape | Rest at a secure sleeping spot before attempting another route | Turn around while you still have stamina to climb, run, or evade |
The practical rule is to retreat before the meter becomes critical. A half-empty health or stamina state can be enough to make the next branch, predator, or climb fatal. The game’s learning loop rewards information gained from a failed attempt, but it does not require you to repeat the same emergency with another clan member.
How to avoid falls while exploring
Read the route before committing
Use your senses and camera position to identify the next several handholds or branches. If you cannot see a safe continuation, stop on the current surface rather than jumping into uncertainty. A route that looks fast from the ground may contain gaps that are difficult to judge while moving.
Separate climbing practice from expedition travel
Do not learn a new movement pattern at the far end of an unexplored region. Spend a deliberate session near camp practicing the action until you can perform it without hesitation. This also develops neuronal abilities, so practice serves both survival and progression.
Keep a return route in mind
Before climbing higher or crossing a new canopy, identify how you will get back. If the only visible route forward requires a difficult jump, the safest choice may be to descend and approach from another direction. Exploration is successful when you return with knowledge, not merely when you reach a new branch.

Do not let a discovery override your condition
A distant landmark or unusual resource can wait. If your ape is tired, injured, thirsty, or carrying an unresolved hazard, mark the location mentally and retreat. Returning later with a healthier adult often converts a fatal attempt into routine travel.

Predators and dangerous encounters
Predator avoidance starts before the encounter. Sense from cover or a stable branch, identify where the threat is, and decide whether the route has multiple exits. Entering unknown vegetation or a narrow space without an escape plan gives you fewer options when an attack begins.
Choose evasion over pride
The official description highlights improving evasive tactics against predators. In practice, an encounter is a decision about clan risk, not a test of courage. If you are alone, injured, carrying an infant, or far from camp, disengage whenever a safe retreat is available. A resource or landmark is not worth sacrificing a trained adult.
Use prepared routes
When you learn that a nearby area is dangerous, note a route that uses climbable surfaces and clear landmarks. Reaching the same resource through a known path is safer than improvising around a threat every time. Keep vulnerable members at the settlement until you have proved the route under ordinary conditions.

An encounter that ends without death can still leave bleeding, venom, fatigue, or fear-related complications. Return to safety, address the immediate condition, eat or drink as needed, and sleep before attempting another expedition. Continuing because the predator has moved away can turn a temporary escape into a delayed loss.
Neuronal skills: what to learn first
Neuronal abilities are developed through action rather than selected from an abstract technology list alone. Exploration, movement, sensory use, food handling, and tool work all teach the clan. The best early “skill order” is therefore a sequence of reliable behaviors rather than an objectively ranked list; no authoritative source establishes one universal optimum.
Start with information and movement
- Sense and observation: practice identifying resources, landmarks, and threats before moving.
- Basic locomotion: reinforce climbing, branch transitions, jumping, and landing in familiar terrain.
- Food handling: learn which nearby resources are safe and how to process them without taking a long trip.
- Simple tool interactions: inspect, gather, and modify ordinary objects repeatedly.
- Evasion: develop movement patterns that let you disengage from predators rather than prolonging a fight.
These categories support one another. Better sensory information reduces bad routes; better movement makes information useful; safe food and water preserve stamina; and tools expand what you can gather or process. Repeat an action until it is dependable before taking it into an unfamiliar region.
Reinforce before risking
When an ability appears, treat it as an invitation to practice, not a signal to attempt the most dangerous version immediately. Reinforcement near camp gives the clan a stable foundation and makes a later generation change less disruptive. If a skill is only reliable under perfect conditions, it is not yet reliable enough for a predator zone or a long return route.

| System | What changes | When to use it | Main risk of rushing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neuronal skills | Actions become learned abilities through exploration, movement, senses, food, and tools | Continuously, especially during safe practice near camp | Taking an untested ability into a dangerous area |
| Generation change | Children move toward adulthood and older members retire, carrying reinforced development forward | After securing the abilities, adults, infants, and safe settlement you need | Advancing with too few healthy adults or without reinforcing useful abilities |
| Evolutionary leap | The clan advances along the broader hominid timeline through completed Evolution Feats | From a safe sleeping spot after preparing the clan and completing meaningful feats | Moving the timeline forward before your practical survival base is ready |
Prepare for a generation change
Before changing generations, reinforce the neuronal abilities that support your current strategy. Check that the clan has enough healthy adults to gather, defend, and explore, as well as infants and children who can carry the group into the next cycle. Confirm that the sleeping location is safe and that nearby water and food remain accessible.
A generation change is not a substitute for learning. It moves the clan’s life stages forward, but it cannot rescue a settlement that lacks safe routes, reliable resources, or practiced movement.
Understand Evolution Feats
Evolution Feats come from discoveries, locations, abilities, and purposeful accomplishments. They add years and accelerate movement toward later hominid stages. Track feats as goals that emerge from play: discovering a place, mastering an ability, or completing a deliberate survival accomplishment can all contribute.
Use a simple order: learn a capability, reinforce it, complete several related feats, then change the generation or take the evolutionary leap from safety. This prevents the timeline from advancing faster than your clan’s practical knowledge.
Know the destination without chasing it blindly
The stated destination is Homo Ergaster, commonly associated with “Turkana boy.” Reaching that stage is a long-term result of accumulated discoveries and feats, not a reason to endanger the starting clan during the first expedition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide between exploration, gathering, and rest
When two actions compete, score the choice against four questions. The point is not to calculate a number; it is to expose the risk you might otherwise ignore.
| Question | Choose the riskier action only when… | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate survival | You already have enough water, food, rest, healing time, and a return route | Secure the missing need first |
| Skill growth | The action can be repeated in a familiar area without risking a key clan member | Practice the same category near camp |
| Clan logistics | Infants, births, adults, and sleeping locations remain protected | Leave vulnerable members at the settlement and shorten the outing |
| Progress security | Important abilities are reinforced and relevant feats are complete before a transition | Delay the generation change or leap and prepare |
If an action fails two or more of these checks, postpone it. A delayed expedition costs little; a lost adult can remove the ability, population, and safe route that the expedition was supposed to create.
Clan logistics after a death or failed expedition
Individual death is part of the learning loop and is not automatically game over. The severe failure state is a complete clan loss. After a death, do not immediately repeat the same route with the next available ape.
Best Value
- Return survivors to safety. Stop the expedition and stabilize anyone injured, poisoned, bleeding, hungry, thirsty, or exhausted.
- Recount the clan. Check how many healthy adults, children, and infants remain and whether the settlement still has a workable food and water routine.
- Identify the failed assumption. Was the route too long, the landing unpracticed, the threat unseen, or the return attempted with too little stamina?
- Rehearse a lower-risk version. Practice the movement, sensing, or tool action near camp before revisiting the location.
- Rebuild numbers and knowledge. Stabilize births and daily needs, reinforce the relevant ability, and only then expand the route.
This turns a loss into information without gambling the rest of the clan. If the same hazard remains unexplained, treat it as a route-design problem rather than bad luck.
A practical progression roadmap
Phase 1: Establish the nest
- Locate water, food, and a sleeping spot close together.
- Learn the immediate terrain with sensory checks.
- Practice basic climbing and landing in safe trees.
- Keep infants and exposed members at camp.
Phase 2: Build dependable abilities
- Repeat safe gathering, inspection, and modification actions.
- Test unfamiliar foods in controlled conditions near the settlement.
- Learn an escape route before entering a predator-prone area.
- Return before stamina, health, hunger, or thirst becomes critical.
Phase 3: Expand in short loops
- Take a healthy, experienced adult along a known route.
- Mark landmarks and identify alternate returns.
- Complete nearby discoveries and purposeful accomplishments.
- Bring knowledge back to camp before attempting the next extension.
Phase 4: Secure a transition
- Reinforce abilities that the clan will depend on.
- Confirm enough healthy adults and a protected younger population.
- Check that food, water, and sleep remain available at the settlement.
- Change generations or take an evolutionary leap only from a safe sleeping spot.
Common beginner problems and fixes
“My ape dies before I reach anything interesting.”
The route is probably longer than your current stamina, or you are leaving without enough preparation. Shorten the trip, identify a nearer resource, and return while the ape is still healthy. Build a chain of safe landmarks instead of trying to cross the whole area in one outing.
“I keep falling even though I unlocked movement abilities.”
An unlocked ability is not the same as mastered timing. Practice the exact branch transition or landing near camp. Slow down when the next surface is obscured, and choose a route with more continuous handholds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Predators keep turning a small injury into a death.”
You are likely continuing after the first escape. Leave the area, recover, and sleep before exploring again. Do not carry infants or an injured adult into another uncertain encounter.
“I changed generations and felt weaker.”
Generation changes retire older members and move children toward adulthood; they do not replace preparation. Reinforce key abilities beforehand and ensure the clan has enough healthy adults to perform essential work.
“I advanced the timeline but cannot handle the new area.”
Evolution Feats accelerate the timeline, but they do not guarantee that your practical routes and movement skills are ready. Return to safe training, complete related feats deliberately, and expand from a secure base rather than forcing the next landmark.
Release and scope notes
PlayStation lists the PS4 release date as December 6, 2019. The publisher describes digital availability on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, while platform editions can differ in controls and interface labels. The survival principles in this guide are platform-agnostic: prepare near water and sleep, sense before moving, practice movement safely, protect vulnerable members, and secure progression before transitions.
