Choose the Retroid Pocket 5 if you want the smaller Android handheld, more memory, faster listed storage and the strongest stated fit for PS2 and GameCube. Choose the ANBERNIC RG556 if you prefer a larger battery, built-in six-axis motion sensing, USB-C display output or the lower observed catalog price. For inexpensive, compact classic gaming, the Linux-based ANBERNIC RG35XX H is the sensible budget choice, but it is not a substitute for either Android model’s higher-end emulation.
What the comparison actually covers
“ANBERNIC vs Retroid” is a brand-level question, but these products are not one-to-one competitors across every price tier. The closest current Android comparison is the ANBERNIC RG556 versus Retroid Pocket 5. The RG35XX H belongs in the discussion as a lower-cost, Linux-based alternative for older systems.

ANBERNIC RG556: strengths and limits
Hardware and display
ANBERNIC’s RG556 specification page, accessed in 2026, lists a 5.48-inch AMOLED display with 1080×1920 resolution. The tall panel is well suited to Android menus, portrait-oriented apps and systems that benefit from a larger viewing area. An AMOLED panel also gives the interface strong contrast, although the specification page does not establish brightness, color calibration or outdoor readability.

The console includes active cooling, Hall-effect joysticks and Hall triggers, which avoid the conventional contact-based sensing used by older analog controls.
Battery, motion and connectivity
The RG556 has a listed 5500mAh battery and an eight-hour battery-life claim from ANBERNIC. That is a manufacturer estimate rather than a standardized test result; screen brightness, emulator settings, wireless radios and game workload will change runtime. Its built-in six-axis gyroscope is useful for games or emulators that accept motion input, a feature the Pocket 5 specification does not list.
Wireless specifications are Wi-Fi 5-class 2.4GHz/5GHz connectivity and Bluetooth 5.0. The USB-C port is listed for 1080p DisplayPort output, so it can serve as a living-room system when paired with a compatible display and cable. The specification does not state whether every USB-C accessory or charging mode is supported, so check the manual for the particular adapter you plan to use.

Systems listed by ANBERNIC
ANBERNIC lists Android games, PlayStation 2, Wii, GameCube, Nintendo 3DS, PSP, Dreamcast, Saturn, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 64 and older platforms. This is a platform-support list, not a promise of full-speed emulation for every title. Demanding games may require per-emulator settings, resolution compromises or community-maintained software.
Retroid Pocket 5: strengths and limits
Hardware and display
Retroid’s current Pocket 5 page lists a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display running at 60Hz. Its 12GB of LPDDR4x RAM exceeds the RG556’s listed 8GB, while 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage is a newer, faster-listed storage class than the RG556’s UFS 2.2. A TF-card slot provides additional game and app storage.
The Pocket 5 uses Hall sticks and analog L2/R2 triggers. Retroid also lists active cooling, Android 13, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. The specifications supplied for this comparison do not list a gyroscope or USB-C DisplayPort output, so do not buy it assuming those features are present.

Battery and listed emulation focus
Retroid lists a 5000mAh battery. Capacity is 500mAh below the RG556’s figure, but capacity alone does not determine runtime: display settings, processor load and software configuration matter. Retroshelf’s comparison gives the Pocket 5 stronger listed coverage for PS2 and GameCube. Treat that as an indication of product positioning, not a guarantee that every game in either library will be playable.
Price shown at the time of research
Retroid’s page displayed a price of $179 with $209 crossed out when accessed in 2026. A displayed price can be a promotion, regional amount or temporary store value; verify the checkout total, shipping, taxes and stock before ordering.
ANBERNIC RG35XX H: the budget classic option
What you get
ANBERNIC lists the RG35XX H with a 3.5-inch 640×480 IPS display, an H700 quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, 1GB of RAM and Linux software. It includes 64GB of TF-card storage, two card slots and support for cards up to 512GB. Wireless connectivity is Bluetooth 4.2, and HDMI output is listed for external screens.
The battery is specified at 3300mAh with an eight-hour claim. As with the RG556, that figure is a manufacturer claim and not a standardized endurance measurement.
Where it fits
ANBERNIC lists PSP, PlayStation, Dreamcast, Nintendo DS and many 8-bit, 16-bit and arcade systems. The H700, 1GB memory and Linux interface place it in a different performance class from the Android models. It is attractive when low price, pocketability and straightforward classic play matter more than PS2, GameCube, modern Android apps or a large screen.

Portability: Pocket 5 versus RG556
Retroshelf reports that the Pocket 5 is about 22% smaller and 15% lighter than the RG556. The supplied comparison does not provide exact dimensions or gram weights, so those percentages are the most specific supported size comparison here. For commuting, travel or one-handed use, the difference should favor the Pocket 5; for extended sessions, the RG556’s larger body may be preferable if its ergonomics suit your hands.

The RG35XX H is the compact option by design, with a 3.5-inch screen and a simpler Linux environment. Its small display is excellent for low-resolution systems but less comfortable for text-heavy menus, touch-focused Android apps or modern 3D games.
Which one is better for PS2 and GameCube?
Based on the reviewed comparison, the Retroid Pocket 5 is the better starting point for a buyer specifically targeting PS2 or GameCube. Retroshelf gives it stronger listed coverage, and its 12GB RAM and UFS 3.1 storage are favorable specifications for an Android emulation setup.
The qualification matters: neither a platform badge nor a processor specification guarantees full-speed performance across an entire library. Emulation depends on the individual game, emulator version, graphics backend, resolution, frame-rate target and thermal behavior. Expect to test settings per title rather than assuming that a console labeled “PS2” or “GameCube” will run every game without adjustment.

ANBERNIC explicitly lists PS2 and GameCube on the RG556, while the RG35XX H’s H700 and 1GB configuration are aimed at much older platforms.
Classic systems, Android apps and storage
For PS1, N64 and earlier libraries
Both Anbernic models’ official lists include PS1 and Nintendo 64, with the RG556 adding a larger AMOLED screen and Android’s broader software environment. The RG35XX H is the economical route when your library is mainly 8-bit, 16-bit, arcade and other classic systems, and you do not need the RG556’s higher-end hardware.
For Android applications
The RG556 and Pocket 5 both run Android 13, so they can use Android-compatible front ends, streaming clients and games. The Pocket 5 has the higher listed memory allocation at 12GB, while the RG556 offers 8GB. App compatibility can vary by developer, Android version and controller support; verify requirements for any essential app before purchase.

For large libraries
The RG556’s official page states TF expansion up to 2TB. The RG35XX H specifies two card slots with support up to 512GB. Retroid confirms TF-card expansion for the Pocket 5 but the supplied specification does not state a maximum capacity. Use a reputable, correctly formatted card and keep a backup of saves; a larger capacity does not protect against card failure.

Hall-effect sticks are listed for both Android models and can reduce the wear mechanism associated with traditional analog sticks, although no durability test is established here. The RG556 additionally lists Hall triggers and a six-axis gyroscope, making it the more clearly specified choice for motion-controlled games.
For big-screen play, the RG556 lists USB-C DisplayPort output at 1080p, while the RG35XX H lists HDMI. The Pocket 5’s supplied specification page does not state a video-output feature. Confirm the exact cable, adapter and display requirements before treating any model as a docked console.
Price evidence and what to verify
| Price reference | What it means |
|---|---|
| RG556: roughly $175; Pocket 5: about $202 | Retroshelf’s 2026 comparison reports these observed catalog prices. They are not guaranteed current checkout prices. |
| Pocket 5: $179 shown, with $209 crossed out | Retroid’s product page displayed this amount when accessed in 2026; promotion, region, tax and shipping can change the final total. |
| RG556: $219.99 after a stated $50 reduction | GamesRadar+ reported this Amazon deal in 2025. It is a historical deal reference, not a current price promise. |
Before ordering, check the seller, region, import charges, return policy, warranty process, included charger and current stock. Handheld prices move quickly, and a lower headline price can be offset by shipping or taxes.
How to choose without overbuying
- List the systems you will actually play. If the list stops at 16-bit, arcade, PS1 or similar classics, start with the RG35XX H. If PS2, GameCube, Android games or streaming apps are central, compare the two Android models.
- Decide whether size or screen area matters more. Pick the Pocket 5 for the reported smaller, lighter Android form factor. Pick the RG556 when its larger AMOLED presentation and bigger battery are more valuable.
- Mark any special hardware requirement. Motion control and USB-C DisplayPort output point to the RG556 based on the listed specifications. A stated need for 12GB RAM, UFS 3.1 or Wi-Fi 6 points to the Pocket 5.
- Budget for storage and protection. Confirm the card capacity you need, then add a compatible case and screen protector only after checking the exact model cutouts.
- Check current pricing at checkout. Treat the catalog figures above as dated observations, not permanent MSRP.
Setup checklist after delivery
- Inspect the hardware before signing into accounts. Confirm the screen, sticks, triggers, buttons, card slot and charging port work without pressure or unusual heat.
- Install available system updates. Use the device’s Android or Linux update path and keep it connected to reliable power during an update.
- Prepare storage carefully. Format a compatible TF card using the device’s documented method, copy files from a verified backup and leave free space for saves and updates.
- Configure controls per emulator. Test the analog sticks, triggers, shoulder buttons and any motion input in a menu before launching a game.
- Start with conservative graphics settings. Use native resolution and a stable frame-rate target first; increase rendering resolution only after a title is reliable.
- Use legally obtained software. The consoles do not grant rights to commercial game files. Follow the laws that apply where you live and keep personal backups organized.
- Test external display output separately. For the RG556, use a compatible USB-C DisplayPort setup; for the RG35XX H, use the documented HDMI connection. Do not assume a generic cable supports video.
Common buying mistakes
- Reading platform lists as guarantees: “PS2” or “GameCube” indicates intended support, not uniform performance across every title.
- Comparing battery numbers without workload context: 5500mAh, 5000mAh and 3300mAh are capacities; actual hours depend on brightness, wireless use, cooling and emulation load.
- Ignoring the operating system: Android offers broader app flexibility, while Linux on the RG35XX H keeps the device focused on classic play.
- Assuming every USB-C port carries video: only the RG556’s supplied specification explicitly lists 1080p DisplayPort output.
- Buying a card by capacity alone: verify the model’s supported maximum, formatting method and card reliability, and maintain a backup.
- Using old price screenshots as current quotes: the Pocket 5’s displayed $179 and the historical RG556 deal are time- and seller-specific.
Verdict by buyer type
| Buyer profile | Recommended model |
|---|---|
| Wants the most portable of the two full Android handhelds | Retroid Pocket 5 |
| Prioritizes PS2/GameCube experimentation | Retroid Pocket 5, with game-by-game performance expectations |
| Wants a larger battery, gyroscope and specified USB-C video | ANBERNIC RG556 |
| Wants a large-screen Android retro device and finds the RG556 cheaper at checkout | ANBERNIC RG556 |
| Wants inexpensive, pocketable classic emulation | ANBERNIC RG35XX H |
The practical choice is therefore workload-led: Pocket 5 for portability and the stronger stated high-end Android profile, RG556 for battery capacity, motion sensing, display output and observed value, and RG35XX H for focused classic gaming at the lower end.
