The argument follows Elliott’s estimate that the game had sold about 120,000 copies on Steam for nearly $7 million, with fewer than one million Steam copies potentially selling during 2026. Those are analyst estimates reported by Tech4Gamers, not official Microsoft sales figures or a count of the game’s total sales across platforms and Game Pass.
What did the analyst say about a PS5 release?
Tech4Gamers reported on October 1, 2026, that Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott thought Xbox should have launched Gears of War: E-Day on PS5 as well as Xbox and PC. His reported reasoning was that the game’s Steam performance raised concern about its sales prospects. This is Elliott’s business judgment, not an official Microsoft admission that its platform strategy was a mistake. Tech4Gamers’ report attributes both the sales estimate and the 2026 projection to him.
What do the reported sales figures actually measure?
Elliott’s reported estimate was about 120,000 Steam copies sold for nearly $7 million, and he projected that Steam sales might not reach one million copies during 2026. These figures are estimates, not audited results or official Microsoft disclosures. They concern Steam, not total sales across Xbox, Microsoft Store PC, or access through Game Pass. The projection is about 2026 and should not be read as a final sales result.
Steam performance can inform a discussion of reach, but it cannot by itself establish how the game is doing across all of its distribution channels. Nor do the reported figures establish how much additional revenue a PS5 version would generate: the sources do not quantify a port’s audience, development and publishing costs, or likely sales.

Which platforms and access options are confirmed?
Microsoft’s official game listing names Xbox Series X|S and PC via the Microsoft Store and Steam. It also lists inclusion at launch with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The current official platform listing does not name PlayStation 5, so a PS5 edition is not confirmed.
| Platform or access route | What the official listing says |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Listed as a platform; the official Gears page describes an Xbox physical-disc edition. Gears of War |
| PC | Listed through the Microsoft Store and Steam. Xbox |
| Game Pass | Listed for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at launch. Xbox |
| PlayStation 5 | Not listed on the current official platform page. No PS5 release date is confirmed there. Xbox |
That mix matters to the platform debate: some players can access the game through a subscription rather than buying a copy, while the Steam estimate counts only the Steam market as reported. It should not be treated as a proxy for all players or all revenue.

A later PS5 port is possible only in the broad sense that it has not been ruled out by the cited material; it is not an announced plan. Microsoft’s current listing does not include PS5, and the Tech4Gamers report’s discussion is an analyst’s recommendation rather than confirmation of a port, timing, or platform change. Anyone deciding whether to wait for a PlayStation version should treat its availability as unknown unless Xbox or the publisher makes an official announcement.
