An old Android tablet gives you a large, always-available control surface for navigation, volume, app launching and text entry. It is not literally universal: Wi-Fi control depends on device support and a shared network, while older infrared-only equipment needs an IR transmitter.
Why an old tablet works so well as a room remote
A conventional remote is compact, but its buttons are easy to lose and awkward for typing. A tablet can display a full directional pad, volume controls, playback keys, app shortcuts and an on-screen keyboard together. A third-party Universal Remote app listing advertises those controls for supported Android TV, Google TV, Roku, Fire TV, Samsung and LG devices; that listing is developer documentation, so compatibility still depends on the exact tablet, app and target device.

The tablet’s physical size is an advantage in a living room. Put it on a stand or charging dock and everyone knows where the remote lives. Because compatible Wi-Fi remotes communicate over the network, you do not have to aim at the television or maintain line of sight.

How tablet control differs from a normal remote

Set up a Wi-Fi remote for an Android TV or Google TV
- Prepare the tablet. Charge it, install pending system updates if available, and remove enough unused apps or data to install a current remote app. If the tablet is unreliable, back up needed files and consider a factory reset before turning it into a dedicated remote.
- Join the correct network. Connect the tablet and the television or streaming device to the same Wi-Fi network. Guest networks, client isolation and separate 2.4 GHz/5 GHz networks can prevent discovery even when both appear to be online.
- Open Google TV or a compatible remote app. Google’s Android TV Help states: “You can use the Google TV app on your phone or tablet to navigate your Android TV.” Start the remote feature and allow the app to find devices on the local network.
- Select the discovered TV. Choose the matching device name, then enter the code shown on the television when the pairing prompt appears. Once accepted, test directional navigation, Back, Home, volume and playback.
- Give it a permanent home. Place the tablet where people naturally sit or pass, connect a charging cable, and use a stable stand. Keep the display timeout long enough for normal viewing but short enough to avoid unnecessary battery drain.
What happens with older IR-only equipment?
Wi-Fi control cannot operate a television, cable box, receiver or other device that exposes no compatible network protocol. Traditional infrared equipment needs a transmitter aimed at the component. Check the tablet’s exact specifications for a built-in IR blaster; many older tablets do not have one.
An IR Blaster app listing describes support for compatible Android devices, USB IR dongles and audio-to-IR adapters, along with several IR protocols. A USB accessory is not automatically compatible: verify the tablet’s USB connector and host support, Android version, the app’s supported hardware and the target device’s protocol before buying. A tablet without those checks may recognize the dongle as ordinary USB hardware and still be unable to send commands.

Sony’s documentation also describes IR control of cable or satellite boxes on certain Google TV and Android TV models, including setups that use an included IR blaster cable. That is model-specific, not evidence that every Android TV television can relay IR commands to every accessory.
A practical hybrid arrangement
Use Wi-Fi for smart devices
Keep the tablet’s main remote app configured for the smart television and streaming boxes. Wi-Fi removes line-of-sight restrictions and makes keyboard entry substantially easier.

Add IR only where it is necessary
For an older DVD player, receiver or set-top box, add a compatible USB IR transmitter or use a separate IR remote. Position the transmitter so its emitter faces the equipment; network control of the TV does not make unrelated IR components network-aware.
Keep a fallback
Retain the original remote or a simple spare for first-time setup, Wi-Fi outages, app failures and battery emergencies. A tablet is a convenient control hub, but it is still a computer that can lose power, disconnect or update.

Troubleshooting when the tablet cannot control the TV
- The TV is not found: confirm both devices are on the same non-guest Wi-Fi network, disable client isolation on the router, and restart the app and TV.
- Pairing code fails: select the correct discovered device, wait for a fresh code and enter it exactly as displayed. Several televisions with similar names can appear on one network.
- Controls work intermittently: check Wi-Fi signal strength near the TV, prevent the tablet from entering aggressive battery-saver mode, and keep the remote app updated where the old Android version allows it.
- Streaming works but an amplifier or cable box does not: those components may be IR-only or use an unsupported protocol. Confirm whether the tablet has an emitter or install a verified compatible dongle.
- The tablet is too slow: remove background apps, clear unnecessary storage and use it as a dedicated remote rather than a general-purpose tablet. If the remote app no longer supports its Android version, the hardware may have reached its practical limit.
When a conventional remote is the better choice
Choose a normal remote when you need instant operation without Wi-Fi, when the target equipment is entirely IR-based, or when guests and children need tactile buttons without unlocking a screen. It is also the safer fallback during router problems. The tablet earns its place when several compatible smart devices share a room and search-heavy streaming makes a keyboard valuable.
