A picture can suggest a scene, action and mood, but it does not specify the musical choices you want. For a stronger image-to-music brief, describe what is visibly in the image, choose the emotional reading you intend, then state the genre, groove, instruments, dynamics and vocal preference directly.
What an image can—and cannot—tell a music generator
Subjects, setting and activity give a generator visual context to draw on. A misty shoreline may suggest solitude; a crowded street may suggest energy. But mood is an interpretation, not an objective property of the image: the same runner could feel triumphant, frightened or playful.

Nor does visible motion determine musical tempo. A person running does not, by itself, establish a brisk beat, just as a still landscape does not require slow music. Treat the image as evidence for a scene or story, and give the generator the musical direction separately.
Google DeepMind’s Lyria prompting guide advises considering who or what is shown, where the scene takes place and what is happening. It also recommends specifying musical elements such as genre, tempo, instruments and dynamics.

Build the brief in five steps
- Record what you can see. Note the people or animals, posture, setting, background, action, light and color. Keep those observations distinct from your interpretation of them.
- Choose the emotional reading. Say whether you want the result to feel, for example, hopeful, uneasy, playful or reflective. If the image could suggest several feelings, pick one rather than leaving the model to decide.
- Translate that feeling into musical choices. Name a genre or blend, mood, instruments, tempo or groove, and dynamics. Describe a progression if it matters, such as starting sparsely and building gradually.
- Make the image’s role clear. Explain that it is a mood or story reference, then specify the sound you want. For example: “Use the misty dawn setting as a quiet, hopeful mood reference; make a slow instrumental folk piece with fingerpicked acoustic guitar, soft strings and a gradual lift. Do not treat visible motion as a literal beat.” This is an illustrative prompt, not a tested recipe or a guarantee.
- Revise one musical choice at a time. Listen for whether the mood, groove, instrumentation and dynamics fit your intention. Changing one dimension per iteration makes it easier to tell what helped. Google DeepMind encourages experimentation, while Udio’s prompt guide recommends trying multiple versions and refining details such as instruments or tempo.
A reusable prompt frame
Use a concise visual description, then spend the rest of the prompt on the sound the picture cannot specify for you:
The image shows [observable subjects, setting and action]. Use its [specific visual evidence] as inspiration for a [chosen emotional reading] track. Make it [genre or style], [tempo or groove], with [instruments]. The dynamics should [progression]. Make it [instrumental or vocal, with voice and language details]. [Optional lyric theme or exact lyrics.]

Check the tool’s image and prompt controls
Image input is not a universal feature of music generators. Google DeepMind’s current Lyria 3.5 product page describes image upload and tracks up to three minutes long. Google’s Gemini API documentation for Lyria 3.5 says users can provide up to 10 images alongside text, and gives the example prompt “An atmospheric ambient track inspired by the mood and colors in this image.” These are product-specific capabilities, not limits or promises that apply to other tools or every model version.

Google’s Cloud Lyria guide frames prompts around genre and style, mood, instrumentation, tempo and rhythm, vocal style and language, and lyrics. It recommends using “instrumental” when you want to exclude vocals. Udio’s cited guidance can inform how you write and refine text prompts; it does not establish that Udio accepts image input or shares Lyria’s capabilities.
