An “Atomic Cannon” Could Help Test Einstein’s Theory of Gravity

Researchers have produced a directed beam of muonium, a short-lived, electrically neutral atom that could let physicists test whether gravity affects a second-generation particle in the same way it affects ordinary matter. The beam is a new tool for a planned gravity experiment—not evidence that Einstein’s theory has failed or that a fifth force exists.

What is the “atomic cannon”?

It is a metaphor for a new muonium beam source developed by researchers affiliated with ETH Zurich, the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Their paper, “Generation of a high-intensity, superthermal muonium beam for gravity and laser spectroscopy experiments,” was published online in Nature Physics on 14 September 2026. It reports producing a directed beam by extracting muonium from a thin layer of superfluid helium. Read the paper in Nature Physics.

The cannon comparison refers to the mechanism, not a physical weapon. The team sends antimuons produced at PSI into superfluid helium, where they slow down and encounter free electrons. An antimuon can bind with an electron to form muonium. The atom’s positive chemical potential helps drive it out of the liquid; as it emerges at the surface, it forms an upward-moving beam. Lead author Jesse Zhang described the chemical potential as “an atomic cannon” in ETH Zurich’s report.

Why use muonium to study gravity?

Muonium consists of an electron bound to a positive muon—an antimuon in the beam-production process. Because the atom is electrically neutral, it is less vulnerable than a charged particle to stray electromagnetic fields, which can obscure gravity’s much weaker influence in an experiment.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The muon is a second-generation particle, unlike the electron in ordinary atoms, and it decays after 2.2 microseconds, according to ETH Zurich’s 2026 report. That short lifetime makes efficient production and carefully timed measurement essential. The experiment’s question is whether muonium responds to gravity as ordinary matter does, testing the universality of free fall and the equivalence of gravitational and inertial mass.

What is different about this beam?

Earlier muonium sources produced atoms moving in many directions and across a broad range of speeds. The reported source instead produces a directed, superthermal beam with a narrower velocity distribution. Those qualities matter because an interferometer needs atoms with controlled motion to make a useful measurement. PSI explains the beam’s significance.

How would the gravity test work?

The researchers are developing an atom interferometer. In this kind of experiment, atoms behave as waves and can form an interference pattern. Gravity is expected to shift that pattern; measuring the displacement would let the team estimate muonium’s gravitational response.

ETH Zurich reported in September 2026 that the researchers hoped to test the method with the beam during 2026, with a gravity experiment potentially following two or three years later. Those dates describe a reported plan, not a completed test or a guaranteed timetable. The available reports provide no measured gravitational acceleration for muonium.

Would a result challenge Einstein?

A measured difference between muonium and ordinary matter would challenge the assumption that gravitational and inertial mass are equivalent across these systems. It could prompt investigation of new physics, including a hypothetical fifth force. But no such deviation has been reported: producing the beam establishes an experimental capability, not a result about gravity. ETH physicist Anna Soter described the goal as measuring “for the first time, whether the equivalence between gravitational and inertial mass also applies to the second generation of particles.”
