What each game is trying to be
Among the Trolls: a Finnish-mythology survival mystery
Among the Trolls is described as a first-person narrative-adventure game with survival elements. Anna arrives in Finland looking for her vanished grandfather. The investigation leads through forests shaped by Finnish mythology, where supernatural beings, harsh weather and natural hazards are as important as the human mystery.

Its Steam tags identify the intended mix: story rich, mythology, atmospheric, exploration, single-player, supernatural, nature, first-person, survival, narrative and crafting. Those labels point to a game in which gathering materials and staying alive support exploration and storytelling rather than replacing them with an endless building project.
The official description also names the Väki and Lykky systems. They connect the world’s magic and luck to survival, giving the folklore setting a mechanical role instead of treating mythology as background decoration. The developer’s premise similarly frames the game as a quest to find a vanished grandparent while learning to survive in the wilderness.
Sons of the Forest: an open-ended survival-horror sandbox
Sons of the Forest begins with a search for a missing billionaire on a remote island. The island is a cannibal-infested hellscape, and the game’s answer to that threat is broad player freedom: you can craft, build, fight, explore and decide how to approach danger alone or with friends.
Its survival-horror identity is more combat-forward. Mutants and cannibals create pressure around your shelter and expeditions, while weapons such as pistols, axes and stun batons give you several ways to respond. The world extends above and below ground, so exploration includes caves and underground spaces as well as the surface.
The game’s seasonal cycle, food storage, shared items and cooperative defenses make the sandbox feel like an ongoing settlement rather than a single path from one story scene to the next. You can pursue the central mystery, but the systems are designed to support self-directed goals such as improving a base, stocking supplies or preparing for the next hostile encounter.
Solo play: which game is better alone?
Choose Among the Trolls for a focused solo journey
Among the Trolls is listed as single-player, so its design is unambiguously centered on one person’s experience. The missing-grandfather premise gives exploration a clear narrative reason, and the Finnish setting supplies a consistent theme for supernatural encounters, weather and wildlife.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This structure suits players who want survival tasks to reinforce a story. You gather and craft because the forest is dangerous and the journey has consequences, not because the main objective is to create the largest possible compound. The authored mystery can also make each discovery feel more directed than a purely systemic sandbox.
Its trade-off is scope. A single-player, narrative-adventure structure generally gives you fewer social and emergent possibilities than a co-op sandbox. If you finish the mystery and want an indefinitely evolving base-building project, the game’s contained format may be less satisfying than Sons of the Forest.
Choose Sons of the Forest for a self-directed solo sandbox
Sons of the Forest supports single-player as well as co-op, so playing alone does not remove its core building and survival systems. You can design structures, collect and store food, prepare for seasonal changes and decide whether to engage, evade or outmaneuver hostile creatures.

Solo play makes the island’s workload more demanding because there are no partners to gather materials, watch a perimeter or revive a downed player. That pressure can be exactly what survival-horror fans want, but it also means that construction and supply management take longer. The game’s strength alone is agency rather than a tightly paced mystery.

If “better solo” means a story with a defined protagonist and folklore-driven investigation, pick Among the Trolls. If it means a large set of systems you can manipulate at your own pace, Sons of the Forest is the stronger fit.
Co-op and playing with friends
What Sons of the Forest supports
Sons of the Forest explicitly supports online co-op and in-game chat. Players can share items, work on the same structures and bring backup when exploring surface areas or underground locations. Cooperative defenses turn a base into a group project: one player can gather or build while another watches for mutants and cannibals.
Co-op also changes the difficulty curve. A group can divide resource collection, cover more territory and recover from mistakes more easily than a lone survivor. The social value is not an add-on; shared construction, supplies and defense are named parts of the game’s design.
What Among the Trolls supports
Among the Trolls is listed as single-player. There is no documented online co-op mode in the listed features, so you should buy it expecting a solo adventure rather than a game for a regular group session.
That limitation is decisive if your purchase depends on playing together. A story-focused solo game can still be atmospheric and mechanically rich, but it cannot provide shared bases, group expeditions or in-game team communication.
Story, setting and tone
Folklore and atmosphere in Among the Trolls
The Finnish forest is the defining character of Among the Trolls. Anna’s search for her grandfather is intertwined with secrets in the landscape and creatures from Finnish mythology. Supernatural encounters, nature and severe weather create tension without requiring every threat to be a combat arena.
This makes the tone more mysterious and contemplative than a conventional monster shooter. Exploration is valuable because it reveals the forest’s mythology and advances a personal investigation. Players who enjoy environmental storytelling, folklore and a sense of place should find the premise more distinctive than a generic wilderness setting.
Island horror in Sons of the Forest
Sons of the Forest uses a remote island, cannibal tribes and mutants to establish immediate physical danger. Its story objective is clear—find the missing billionaire—but the game gives you considerable freedom in how you survive and when you pursue discoveries.

The result is a more aggressive tone. Weapons, defensive structures and underground expeditions are practical responses to enemies that can attack your plans. The island’s changing seasons add a recurring environmental rhythm, while the open world lets players create their own stories between major discoveries.
Building, crafting and survival systems
Among the Trolls: survival supports exploration
Among the Trolls includes crafting and building alongside weather, wildlife and limited resources. Scarcity means that decisions about what to collect and carry matter, while changing conditions can make a familiar route less safe. The Väki and Lykky systems add a supernatural layer to the usual survival loop.
The published information does not describe an equivalent catalog of freeform construction pieces or a co-op settlement system. Therefore, treat building here as part of the narrative-survival toolkit rather than assuming it offers the same architectural freedom as Sons of the Forest.
Sons of the Forest: construction as a central activity
Sons of the Forest emphasizes freeform structures. You can decide where to establish a base, how to organize defenses and which resources to store for later. Food storage and shared items support longer expeditions, while cooperative construction lets several players improve one settlement together.
Crafting has a similarly practical role. Pistols, axes and stun batons provide different answers to hostile creatures, and preparation becomes more important as seasons change. A shelter is not just a checkpoint; it is a defensible workspace, a stockpile and a launch point for surface and underground exploration.
Which has better building and crafting?
Pick Sons of the Forest if “better” means more freedom to design, expand and defend a base, especially with friends. Pick Among the Trolls if you want crafting and survival choices embedded in a story and mythology-led expedition. The available descriptions establish different priorities, not a common feature set that can be scored on a single scale.
Combat, danger and exploration
Threats in Among the Trolls
The documented threats in Among the Trolls include supernatural creatures, wild animals, harsh weather and limited resources. Danger comes from the environment as well as from enemies, so planning a trip involves more than choosing a weapon. The game’s first-person perspective and atmospheric presentation support close-up exploration of the Finnish wilderness.

Sons of the Forest makes hostile inhabitants a constant concern. Cannibals and mutants can challenge an exposed camp or an expedition, and the available weapons range from pistols and axes to stun batons. Defensive construction gives you a way to shape encounters instead of treating every attack as a simple chase.
Exploration is deliberately broad: the store description calls out both above-ground and below-ground areas. With friends, that creates a natural reason to split responsibilities or bring backup; alone, it turns every cave trip into a larger risk-management decision.

Reception: what the current Steam snapshot says
At the time checked, Steam showed Among the Trolls with 40% positive from 49 all-time user reviews. That is a small sample, and the game released on October 14, 2026, so the percentage can move substantially as more players post reviews.
Sons of the Forest showed 88% positive from 118,961 English-language reviews. Its recent-review figure was 90% positive from 3,052 reviews. The much larger total gives that percentage more statistical stability than the early Among the Trolls sample, although user reviews still reflect player opinion rather than an independent benchmark or critic score.

Checking whether your PC is suitable
- Open your Windows system information and record the exact CPU model, installed RAM and Windows edition.
- Check your graphics card model and dedicated video memory in Windows display settings or your GPU driver utility.
- Compare every component with the game’s minimum list, not just the graphics card.
- Reserve at least the listed storage space—30 GB for Among the Trolls or 20 GB for Sons of the Forest—plus additional room for Windows, updates and saved files.
- If your PC is close to the minimum, treat the result as uncertain because the published lists do not specify expected performance settings.
Among the Trolls asks for more memory and a stronger minimum graphics card on paper, while Sons of the Forest requires less listed storage and RAM. That does not make one universally easier to run: CPU generation, driver support, resolution and in-game settings all affect actual performance.
Which game should you buy?
Pick Sons of the Forest when…
- You need online co-op, in-game chat and shared progression with friends.
- You want to design a base, stock supplies and build defenses rather than follow a strictly directed route.
- Mutants, cannibals and weapon-based survival-horror combat are central attractions.
- You enjoy seasonal changes and repeated expeditions above and below ground.
- You prefer the reassurance of a large, established Steam review sample.
Pick Among the Trolls when…
- You will play alone and want a game designed around a single protagonist.
- A mystery about a missing grandfather is more appealing than an open-ended island sandbox.
- Finnish mythology, supernatural folklore and atmospheric forest exploration are your main reasons to play.
- You want weather, wildlife, scarce resources and crafting to serve a narrative journey.
- You prefer a more contained adventure instead of a long-term shared settlement project.
Choose based on your group, not only your hardware
If your regular group is ready to play together, the mode difference outweighs most specification differences: Among the Trolls is single-player, while Sons of the Forest is built to share. If you are buying strictly for yourself, decide whether your priority is authored mystery or systemic freedom before comparing graphics cards.

Sons of the Forest is the better overall recommendation for most survival players because it combines online co-op, freeform building, seasonal resource management and a far larger positive review base. Its island supports both short sessions with friends and long-running projects built around storage, defenses and exploration.
Among the Trolls is the better specialist choice for a solo player who wants Finnish mythology, supernatural atmosphere and a story-led search through the wilderness. Its early 40%-positive Steam snapshot is based on only 49 reviews, so that reception should be treated as preliminary rather than a settled judgment.
Match the purchase to the experience you will actually play: choose the island for shared survival and construction; choose the Finnish forest for a focused mystery and folklore-driven adventure.
