Among the Trolls requires a 64-bit Windows 10 Home PC, 16 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1070 or RX 5600 XT at minimum. The official recommended target is considerably higher: 32 GB of RAM, an RTX 2080 Ti or RX 7700 XT, and a Core i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 4800H. You need 30 GB of free space, DirectX 12, and an SSD is preferred in both configurations.

The single-player first-person narrative adventure launched on PC through Steam on October 14, 2026. It follows Anna through the Finnish wilderness as she searches for her missing grandfather, gathers resources, crafts equipment, and encounters Finnish mythology and supernatural creatures. The requirements below are the official Steam requirements; no official average-FPS benchmark has been published, so a particular frame rate cannot be promised from the component list alone.

Official Among the Trolls PC requirements

Steam lists separate minimum and recommended configurations. Meeting the minimum means your hardware reaches the stated entry point; it does not guarantee a particular resolution, preset, or frame rate. The recommended column is the more useful target if you want additional headroom for higher image quality or heavier scenes.

What the requirements mean for your PC

Windows and DirectX

The listed operating system is Windows 10 Home 64 bit. A 64-bit installation is essential because a 32-bit edition is outside the published requirement. DirectX 12 is required in both tiers, so update Windows and your graphics driver before troubleshooting. The listing does not establish support details for other Windows editions or operating systems.

Processor

The minimum CPUs are an Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600. The recommended class rises to an Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 4800H. These are reference models, not a guarantee that every processor with a similar name will behave identically. Check your exact model, generation, clock behavior, and whether your desktop or laptop can maintain its rated power under load.

Memory

Among the Trolls needs 16 GB of system memory at minimum and 32 GB for the recommended configuration. If your machine has 8 GB, it is below the published requirement. On a 16 GB system, close browsers, launchers, recording tools, and other heavy applications before starting the game so that the game and Windows are not competing for the same memory. A matched 32 GB kit is the clearest memory upgrade when you are targeting the recommended tier; verify whether your motherboard uses DDR4 or another memory type before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Graphics card and VRAM

The minimum graphics tier is a GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon RX 5600 XT. The recommended tier is a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or Radeon RX 7700 XT. Steam supplies no resolution-specific performance figures and no VRAM guidance. When comparing a replacement card, first determine whether it reaches one of those official tiers, then check its available VRAM for the resolution you intend to use. A card that is below the minimum may still launch the game, but settings reductions cannot turn it into a supported configuration or guarantee stable play.

Storage and SSD

Reserve at least 30 GB of free space. That is the published capacity, not a recommendation to fill a drive to its limit: leave additional room for Windows, shader caches, updates, save data, and other applications. Steam marks an SSD as preferred for both configurations. An NVMe SSD can help reduce asset-streaming delays in some systems, but no measured loading-time improvement for this title has been published. Install the game on an SSD when possible and keep the drive from becoming nearly full.

Network and audio

The minimum listing does not specify a network connection, while the recommended listing calls for broadband internet. The game is described as single-player, so the table does not establish a multiplayer bandwidth requirement. A DirectX-compatible sound card is listed in both tiers. If you use USB audio, HDMI audio, or an integrated motherboard device, keep its driver current and select the intended output in Windows and in-game.

Can your current PC run Among the Trolls?

Use this checklist before purchasing or changing hardware:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows System Information or Settings and confirm that the operating system is a 64-bit Windows installation.
  2. Write down the exact CPU model, not just the brand or family name.
  3. Check that the GPU is at least a GTX 1070 or RX 5600 XT for the minimum target, or at least an RTX 2080 Ti or RX 7700 XT for the recommended target.
  4. Confirm that the system has 16 GB of RAM for minimum compliance or 32 GB for the recommended target.
  5. Check the drive where you will install the game and make sure 30 GB is free before accounting for future updates and normal system overhead.
  6. Verify that DirectX 12 is available and that your graphics driver is current.
  7. For a laptop, check whether its GPU uses a lower-power implementation than the desktop model named in a comparison; model names alone do not establish equal performance.

If every minimum item is met, begin with a conservative resolution and graphics preset and adjust upward. If the GPU is below the minimum tier, treat the machine as unsupported rather than assuming a few settings changes will produce a stable result. If the CPU, RAM, or storage is below specification but the GPU is adequate, address the specific shortfall first and test again.

Best upgrade order for smoother performance

1. Identify whether the GPU is the limiting part

The largest jump in the published tiers is the graphics requirement: GTX 1070/RX 5600 XT at minimum versus RTX 2080 Ti/RX 7700 XT recommended. For low frame rates at an appropriate resolution, compare your card against those classes first. Before buying, check the card’s physical length, power connectors, power-supply capacity, motherboard slot, case airflow, and monitor connection. The official requirements do not provide a frame-rate target, so choose a card based on your display resolution and other games as well as this title.

2. Move from 16 GB to 32 GB when memory is constrained

Because the official recommendation doubles RAM, memory is the most direct upgrade for systems that already have a suitable GPU and CPU but experience paging or hitching while other programs are open. Use a compatible matched kit, observe your motherboard’s maximum capacity and supported speed, and install modules in the board’s recommended paired slots. Do not assume that adding a single unmatched module will deliver the same result as a matched kit.

3. Install on an SSD

An SSD is preferred in both official configurations. If the game is on a hard disk, move it to an SSD with at least 30 GB free plus room for updates. An NVMe model may reduce asset-streaming delays compared with slower storage, but there is no published Among the Trolls measurement that quantifies the difference. Check the motherboard’s M.2 interface, available lanes, and heat clearance before purchasing an NVMe drive.

4. Check the CPU and platform together

If your processor is below the Core i5-10400/Ryzen 5 1600 minimum, a graphics upgrade alone may leave the system CPU-limited. Reaching the recommended CPU class can require a new motherboard, memory standard, or cooling solution, particularly when moving between desktop and laptop platforms. Confirm socket compatibility, firmware support, cooler mounting, power delivery, and case clearance before ordering parts. The named Ryzen 7 4800H is a mobile processor, so it is not a drop-in desktop replacement for the Core i7-10700K.

Settings and troubleshooting procedure

Change one variable at a time and record the resolution, preset, and behavior you observe. That makes it possible to identify the change that helped instead of guessing.

  1. Update the basics. Install the current graphics driver supplied for your GPU, apply pending Windows updates, restart the PC, and close unnecessary background workloads such as browsers, capture software, and launchers.
  2. Start with a lower resolution. Steam Support recommends lowering video resolution when performance is inadequate. Reduce resolution before making many other changes, then test the same scene or activity again.
  3. Use a lower launch mode if necessary. Steam Support also recommends lower launch modes for inadequate performance. Use the launch options exposed by Steam for the game, then remove them once you have established a stable baseline.
  4. Reduce demanding graphics options. Lower the overall preset or the options that have the greatest visual cost in your configuration. Because no title-specific benchmark has been published, measure the result on your own system rather than relying on a claimed FPS gain.
  5. Move the installation to an SSD. If hitching occurs during exploration or new areas loading, confirm that the game is on an SSD with adequate free space. Storage changes may help streaming delays but cannot compensate for a GPU below the minimum.
  6. Check memory use. Watch Windows memory usage while the game is running. Close avoidable applications, and consider a 32 GB upgrade if the system regularly exhausts 16 GB.
  7. Retest after each change. Keep a short note of the setting, location, and observed behavior. Restore the previous value if a change makes image quality or stability worse.

When low FPS persists

Confirm that the game is using the dedicated GPU rather than an integrated graphics processor, especially on a laptop. Connect the display to the graphics card’s output on a desktop, set the game to the intended GPU in Windows graphics settings, and check that the GPU is not overheating or power-limited. If the card is below GTX 1070/RX 5600 XT class, upgrading the GPU is more dependable than continually lowering settings.

When stuttering or hitching persists

Check free storage, background memory use, driver status, and whether the game is installed on an SSD. If the system has 16 GB and other applications remain open, close them and retest before buying hardware. An SSD can reduce streaming delays, but the official sources do not establish a guaranteed fix or a numerical improvement.

When the game will not launch

Recheck the 64-bit Windows requirement, DirectX 12 availability, graphics-driver installation, and free disk space. Verify that the installed GPU is not below the published minimum. A launch failure can have causes unrelated to raw performance, so do not infer that a higher FPS-capable card alone will resolve an operating-system or driver problem.

How to compare upgrade options

Use the official tiers as a compatibility filter, then evaluate the rest of the system around the part you plan to buy.

Comparison question Why it matters
Does the part meet the minimum or recommended tier? This tells you whether the finished PC reaches the published target, rather than merely improving on your current part.
How much VRAM does the graphics card provide? Steam does not specify VRAM, so compare capacity with your intended resolution and other software requirements.
Will it fit and run in your system? Check power-supply wattage and connectors, motherboard compatibility, case dimensions, cooling, and laptop upgrade limits.
How much SSD capacity remains after installation? The game needs 30 GB, but updates and normal operating-system use require additional free space.
What is the total upgrade cost? A CPU change may also require a motherboard, memory, cooler, or power-supply change; compare the complete platform cost.

What the official information does not promise

  • No official FPS average, 1% low, resolution target, or graphics-preset benchmark is published in the cited Steam materials.
  • The requirements do not state a specific VRAM amount.
  • The 30 GB figure is an available-space requirement, not a claim that the installed folder will never grow.
  • SSD is marked preferred, not mandatory, in both configurations.
  • Broadband is listed only in the recommended network field; the minimum field says not listed.
  • The published operating-system line names Windows 10 Home 64 bit and does not provide a separate compatibility statement for other editions.

Practical target for a new or upgraded PC

For the least-risk configuration, build around the recommended row rather than the minimum: a Core i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 4800H-class processor, RTX 2080 Ti or RX 7700 XT-class graphics, 32 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, and an SSD with substantially more than 30 GB free. Confirm that the power supply, motherboard, cooling, and case support the selected parts. This approach gives you the hardware class Steam identifies as recommended, but it still does not establish a guaranteed frame rate because no official benchmark accompanies the requirements.

A minimum-spec machine can be a reasonable entry point if you accept the need to start at lower resolution or settings and tune from there. Keep drivers current, reduce background workloads, install on an SSD when possible, and test after each change. Those steps address common causes of poor performance without pretending that unsupported hardware has become equivalent to the recommended tier.
