Among the Trolls Beginner’s Guide (2026): Exploring, Crafting, and Surviving

Your safest first session in Among the Trolls starts at the cabin, not in the wilderness. Search the cabin and yard, practise the bow at the target range, collect sticks and stone on every trip, and keep food, water, warmth, and sleep ahead of empty. Craft from Anna’s backpack using recipes in her journal, then build bridges rather than attempting the Deep Sea. This routine gives you ammunition, shelter, tools, and a reliable route to the next island while leaving room to investigate the mystery of your missing grandfather.

What Among the Trolls is and what you are trying to do

Among the Trolls is a single-player, first-person narrative adventure for PC. It is set in Finnish forests and follows an investigation into the disappearance of the protagonist’s grandfather. Exploration is constantly interrupted by practical problems: harsh weather, wild animals, scarce resources, supernatural encounters, and the need to keep several survival meters from collapsing.

The game’s setting draws on Finnish mythology, ancient shamanistic magic, and creatures associated with Kalevala traditions. Two named forces shape the experience. Väki represents magic, while Lykky represents luck. They are not merely background terminology: the official game description presents them as forces that affect survival and the way supernatural danger unfolds.

The current official release date is 14 October 2026. The Steam listing identifies the release as a single-player PC game. Your practical objective during the opening is therefore twofold: make the cabin area sustainable, then use crafting and bridge-building to reach more of the archipelago and continue the story.

Your first-session route, in order

Follow this sequence before you begin long-distance exploration. It minimizes the chance that a depleted meter or broken weapon ends your first outing.

  1. Search the starting cabin and yard. Look through the immediate area before committing to a distant path. The cabin is your safest reference point and the place from which your first gathering and crafting loop begins.
  2. Visit the target range behind the cabin. Fire practice shots there to learn the bow without spending the arrows you may need for hunting and hostile encounters.
  3. Collect sticks and stone while walking. Sticks become arrows, and wood and stone support your first tools, structures, and other recipes. Treat loose resources as future repairs, not clutter.
  4. Check your needs before leaving the local area. Eat and drink while you still have a margin. Hunger, thirst, sleep, and temperature continue to operate while you travel.
  5. Open Anna’s journal and review unlocked recipes. Craft in the backpack while the world remains visible. Knowing what a new recipe needs prevents a wasted trip.
  6. Prepare a fire and shelter plan. Cold conditions and night become urgent when you are far from the cabin. Do not start a long route without knowing where warmth and cover will come from.
  7. Return with a purpose. Bring back enough materials for ammunition, tools, food, shelter, or a bridge rather than wandering until every meter is critical.

Make the cabin your operating base

The cabin is more than the opening location. It is the point from which you can safely learn the bow, sort materials, consult the journal, and decide whether the next trip is for survival supplies, story progress, or a crossing. A short loop around the cabin is valuable because it lets you test the survival system without risking a long expedition.

Search before you roam

Clear the cabin and its yard first. This gives you an inventory baseline and reveals what the immediate environment can provide. Once you know which basic resources are nearby, you can judge whether a proposed trip is worth its cost in food, water, arrows, and time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the target range for free practice

The target range behind the cabin is the right place to become comfortable with the bow. Practise aiming and releasing there instead of turning early hunting attempts into an ammunition shortage. The range lets you learn the weapon before a real animal or enemy is deciding the pace of the encounter.

Keep a return threshold

Set a personal rule that sends you back before a meter reaches empty. The exact depletion rate is not given in the available game information, so the safe strategy is to preserve a buffer rather than calculate a universal number. A full inventory does not compensate for arriving home exhausted, thirsty, cold, or without arrows.

How the survival meters change your decisions

Four needs run continuously: hunger, thirst, sleep, and temperature. They are not separate chores that can be ignored until a warning appears. A trip that is safe for one meter may still be dangerous because another is falling.

Need What to watch Practical response before a risky trip
Hunger Food supply and the remaining margin before depletion Eat before departure and carry at least one useful meal when entering a dungeon or portal.
Thirst Available drink and how long the route will keep you away from safety Drink before leaving the cabin; do not rely on finding a solution after the meter is already critical.
Sleep Accumulated fatigue during extended exploration Plan a return or shelter stop instead of adding another detour when tiredness is rising.
Temperature Exposure to cold conditions and the loss of warmth away from shelter Keep a fire and shelter plan ready before night or cold weather becomes the immediate threat.

These meters are best managed as a single expedition budget. If food is low, shorten the route. If warmth is uncertain, do not spend the last daylight on a distant island. If sleep is poor, avoid turning a routine resource run into a dungeon attempt. The game’s danger comes from the combination of needs, weather, terrain, and encounters rather than from combat alone.

Gathering priorities for the opening

Early gathering should support three outcomes: keeping you alive, keeping your bow supplied, and unlocking construction. Pick up basic materials on ordinary walks so a later recipe does not require a dedicated emergency trip.

Resource or supply Why it matters early How to use the priority
Sticks They become arrows and support early crafting. Collect them whenever you pass them; arrows are easier to preserve when practice happens at the target range.
Stone It supports early tools and structures. Keep a reserve instead of spending every piece immediately on one recipe.
Wood and other bridge materials They enable shelters, structures, and crossings. Gather with the next bridge or building project in mind, then return to craft before the route becomes urgent.
Food and drink They keep hunger and thirst from ending a run in the forest. Carry enough for the planned distance, with a margin for detours and encounters.
Healing supplies They reduce the cost of mistakes in combat and dangerous areas. Reserve at least some healing capacity for dungeons and portals rather than using it casually on minor damage.

Think of every gathering trip as collecting future ammunition and repairs. This mindset matters because the bow’s handle remains in your inventory when the weapon breaks. Rebuilding therefore uses resources found during exploration; you do not lose the entire weapon and start from nothing.

The backpack-and-journal crafting loop

Crafting is the game’s progression system, not a side activity. Recipes cover weapons, ammunition, tools, buildings, shelters, bridges, cooking, and magical potions. Anna crafts inside her backpack while the world remains visible, so you can make a decision without treating the inventory screen as a separate workshop.

Use the journal as your recipe index

Recipes come from Anna’s journal. Whenever a recipe unlocks, check the journal before leaving the area. This tells you what the new option is for and which materials you should collect on the next loop. It also prevents the common mistake of carrying a full load of unrelated items while missing one basic component for the thing that actually advances you.

Craft in response to a route

Choose the next destination first, then craft for its demands. A hunting trip needs arrows and food. A cold-weather route needs a fire and shelter plan. A bridge project needs the required wood and supplies. A dungeon or portal run needs arrows, healing supplies, and at least one useful meal. Crafting everything available may leave you with no reserve for repairs or the next crossing.

Use potions as preparation, not decoration

Magical potions are part of the crafting system and can help with dungeons, enemies, and the effects of bad Lykky. If the journal offers a potion that matches the danger ahead, treat it as a planned tool. Do not wait until an encounter has already consumed your arrows and healing supplies to decide that preparation would have been useful.

Bow use, ammunition, and repairs

The bow gives you a way to hunt and respond to threats at range, but arrows are a limited practical resource during an early outing. The target range exists specifically to separate learning the weapon from spending ammunition needed elsewhere.

Preserve arrows for meaningful encounters

Practise behind the cabin, then carry arrows for hunting, hostile animals, and supernatural encounters. If an encounter would consume more arrows and time than it is worth, running is a valid response. Not every fight is a mandatory objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair with the handle you keep

When the bow breaks, its handle remains in the inventory. Gathered materials can therefore restore your ranged option without replacing the complete weapon. This is another reason to pick up sticks and other basic materials even when your current equipment appears healthy.

Carry a reserve into enclosed danger

Dungeons and portals remove some of the flexibility you have in the open forest. Enter only when your survival meters are comfortably above emergency levels and your inventory includes arrows, healing supplies, and a meal. If the preparation cost is too high, leave the entrance marked by your route and return after a gathering cycle.

Bridges are the way through the archipelago

The islands are connected by progression gates. Bridges are not optional scenery: they open routes, expose new resources and crafting possibilities, and carry the story forward.

Crossing type Role Correct approach
Normal bridge Provides a regular crossing between reachable parts of the archipelago. Gather the wood and other supplies required by the recipe, then build it rather than searching for a dangerous shortcut.
Magic bridge Repairs or enables some broken routes through magical means. Use the journal to identify the recipe and collect its materials before committing to the crossing.

Do not swim the Deep Sea

Trying to swim across the Deep Sea is identified as a costly beginner mistake. Build the intended bridge instead. The crossing is a progression problem solved by gathering and crafting, not a test of how long you can remain in the water.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan bridge runs as supply runs

Before setting out, inspect the journal recipe, count what you already own, and gather the shortfall. Bring enough food, water, and warmth for the return journey as well as the construction site. Once the bridge is complete, use the newly opened island immediately: the point of the expense is access to the next story area, resources, and crafting options.

Exploring safely beyond the cabin

Exploration is most efficient when each trip has a declared purpose. Choose one of four goals: replenish survival supplies, gather a specific crafting material, reach a bridge site, or investigate a story location. A focused trip makes it easier to decide when to turn around.

Use short loops before long routes

Start with a loop that ends at the cabin. Learn how long your supplies last, which materials appear nearby, and how quickly weather or temperature changes affect your margin. Only then extend the route toward an island crossing or supernatural location.

Leave room for an unexpected encounter

Wild animals and supernatural encounters can consume arrows, healing items, and time. Do not fill every inventory slot with construction materials if the route passes through a dangerous area. A reserve gives you the choice to fight, retreat, or run instead of forcing a bad engagement.

Treat low Lykky as a warning

Low Lykky should change your behavior. It is a warning that the next stretch may be less forgiving, not decorative lore to ignore. Delay an optional dungeon, carry better supplies, or choose a shorter route when your luck is poor. The game describes Väki and Lykky as forces intertwined with survival, so use their state to decide how much risk to accept.

Fire, shelter, weather, and night

Cold conditions turn distance into danger. A route that is manageable in daylight can become a survival problem when warmth falls and the return trip takes longer than expected. Keep a fire and shelter plan ready before night arrives.

  • Before departure: confirm where you can warm up or take shelter if the trip runs long.
  • During the route: monitor temperature instead of waiting for a final warning.
  • When weather worsens: stop gathering optional materials and move toward the nearest safe plan.
  • At night: avoid extending a successful trip just to collect one more resource.

The safest shelter is the one you planned before leaving, not the one you hope to discover after a meter is empty. Construction materials gathered during ordinary walks make this preparation less expensive.

Dungeons, portals, and supernatural risk

Dungeons and portals are escalation points. They combine navigation, combat, survival management, and the effects associated with Väki and Lykky. Enter them when your basic needs are above emergency levels, not when you are already trying to recover from a long expedition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a pre-entry checklist

  • Food and water are sufficient for the route in and the return.
  • Sleep and temperature are not already near a critical state.
  • You have arrows for likely encounters and a plan for obtaining or rebuilding more.
  • You carry healing supplies and at least one useful meal.
  • Your journal has been checked for relevant weapons, tools, or potions.

Choose retreat over attrition

If an enemy is costing too many arrows, or the environment is draining your supplies faster than expected, retreat. Running is explicitly a valid response in Among the Trolls. Returning with resources and information is better than converting a single encounter into a failed expedition.

A practical first-session checklist

Use this list as a compact plan for your first several in-game trips:

  1. Search the cabin and yard.
  2. Visit the target range behind the cabin and practise the bow.
  3. Collect sticks and stone on every local walk.
  4. Keep food, drink, sleep, and temperature above emergency levels.
  5. Open Anna’s journal whenever a recipe unlocks.
  6. Craft arrows, tools, shelter, food, or potions according to the next route.
  7. Keep a fire and shelter plan ready before night or cold weather.
  8. Gather bridge materials instead of attempting to swim the Deep Sea.
  9. Build the normal or magic bridge required for the crossing.
  10. Enter dungeons and portals only with arrows, healing supplies, and a meal.
  11. Treat low Lykky as a reason to reduce risk.
  12. Run when combat costs more arrows and time than the objective justifies.

Common beginner mistakes and the fix for each

Leaving immediately after the opening

Problem: You miss the chance to establish supplies and learn the bow safely.

Fix: Search the cabin and yard, then use the target range before travelling far.

Entering a dungeon with no reserve

How the pieces fit together

The opening is designed as one connected loop. The cabin gives you a base; the target range teaches the bow without consuming hunting ammunition; sticks and stone support arrows, tools, and structures; the journal tells you what to craft; the backpack lets you make it without leaving the world; and bridges turn those supplies into access to new islands.

Story progress and survival progress therefore reinforce each other. Exploring reveals resources and mysteries, crafting converts resources into the equipment and crossings that make further exploration possible, and careful management of hunger, thirst, sleep, temperature, Väki, and Lykky keeps the journey from ending before the next discovery. Once that loop is established, the game’s Finnish folklore, supernatural encounters, and grandfather mystery have room to unfold without every expedition becoming a crisis.
