The central dispute is about what particular ions mean—not whether every chemical reaction in microdroplets is unreal.
What is the water-microdroplet controversy?
Water microdroplets are tiny droplets examined for unusual chemical behavior. Some studies have proposed that reactions at their interfaces can produce highly reactive species, including hydroxyl radicals (OH•), without the usual added reagents or energy input. Evidence for such a mechanism can depend on identifying short-lived or charged species from their mass-to-charge ratio, or m/z, in a mass spectrometer.

The 2026 reappraisal in the Journal of the American Chemical Society challenges how some of those signals were assigned. It argues that ammonia contamination and the formation of ammonia-containing ions could account for important observations attributed to radical chemistry. That makes the interpretation of the signals less certain; it does not show that all microdroplet reactions are artifacts or that hydroxyl radicals can never be present.
Why is the m/z 36 signal disputed?
A 2025 study in ACS Central Science examined an ion at m/z 36. The earlier proposed identity was a water dimer radical cation, (H2O)2+•. Using accurate-mass measurements, the 2025 study instead assigned the signal to NH4+(H2O): an ammonium ion associated with one water molecule.

- Helps monitor and adjust ammonia level and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish
- Accurately reads ammonia 0 - 8 ppm (mg/L)
- Fish continually release ammonia and uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to water
- Use several times a week when starting a new aquarium then weekly or when problem arise
That difference matters because a detected ion is not, by itself, proof of the reaction pathway that produced it. If the ion is hydrated ammonium rather than a water-derived radical cation, its presence does not establish spontaneous radical generation. The 2026 account also describes collision-induced dissociation: when the m/z 36 ion was broken apart, it yielded an ion at m/z 18, behavior consistent with NH4+. The account contrasts this with the expected behavior of protonated water clusters.
How could ammonia from air get into the measurement?
In the 2025 ACS Central Science experiments, exposing the droplets to breath increased the ammonium-related ion series. Purging the setup with nitrogen nearly eliminated it. The authors interpret those results as evidence that ammonia from surrounding air was a major source of the signal under their experimental conditions.

The study also reported an unoptimized gaseous-ammonia detection limit in the low-parts-per-billion range. That figure describes those experiments, not a universal specification for mass spectrometers or a measurement of typical exposure. The breath and nitrogen-purge results are useful contamination controls because they test whether changing the surrounding air changes the detected ions; they do not establish that every disputed signal in every instrument has the same source.

The reappraisal distinguishes gas-flow nebulization from electrospray. Gas-flow nebulization uses a gas stream to produce droplets, while electrospray uses voltage. Since the way droplets are formed and the surrounding gas can affect what enters a measurement, results from one setup should not automatically be treated as confirmation of an interpretation made with another.

The relevant question is therefore not simply whether a study used “microdroplets.” It is what ion or product it measured, how it generated the droplets, what contamination controls it used, and whether its conclusion concerns an observed substance or a proposed mechanism.
How the related studies differ
| Study | What it examined | What it reported | What the result does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025, ACS Central Science | An ion at m/z 36 in a droplet mass-spectrometry experiment | Assigned it to hydrated ammonium, NH4+(H2O); breath exposure increased the ion series, while nitrogen purging nearly eliminated it. | That every m/z 36 signal in every instrument has the same identity, or that all proposed microdroplet radical chemistry is false. |
| 2025, Analytical Chemistry | Alternative interpretations of ions used as evidence for abundant hydroxyl radicals | Discussed ammonia adduction and trace sample contamination as possible explanations for some ions. | That contamination explains every reported radical-related observation. |
| 2026, Journal of the American Chemical Society | A critical reappraisal of evidence for spontaneous hydroxyl-radical generation in aqueous nanodroplets | Argued that ammonia contamination can account for important mass-spectrometry signals previously interpreted as radical chemistry. | That the broader field of microdroplet chemistry has been disproved. |
| 2024, Environmental Science & Technology | Water microdroplets containing dissolved ammonia sprayed through a copper oxide mesh | Reported nitrate and molecular hydrogen production using 30–300 μM dissolved ammonia. | That ammonia formed spontaneously from ambient nitrogen, or that the experiment resolves the disputed mass-spectrometry assignments. |
Does the ammonia-oxidation experiment contradict the contamination argument?
No. The 2024 Environmental Science & Technology experiment addressed a different question. It deliberately began with water containing 30–300 μM dissolved ammonia and sprayed it through a copper oxide mesh. It reported nitrate and molecular hydrogen in a liquid–solid interfacial setup. That is distinct from proposing that ammonia forms from ambient nitrogen, and distinct again from asking whether ammonia contamination explains particular mass-spectrometry ions.

Keeping those claims separate prevents a common mix-up: evidence that ammonia can participate in a designed droplet reaction does not identify an ion in a different experiment, while an alternative explanation for a disputed ion does not invalidate the separate reaction result.

The reappraisal raises the bar for interpreting signals that are offered as evidence of spontaneous radical production. A convincing claim needs to show not only that an ion appears, but also that its identity and origin are well supported. Accurate-mass assignment, fragmentation behavior, controls for surrounding air and trace contamination, and comparisons across droplet-generation methods all help test that case.

The present dispute is signal-specific. Ammonia adduction and trace contamination are alternative explanations for some reported ions, not a universal explanation for every product or reaction observed in microdroplets. The strongest conclusion is that key evidence for particular spontaneous-radical claims has been challenged and should be assessed ion by ion and setup by setup.
