Montenegro extradited Amir Barati to the United States on October 1, 2026. He is one of 17 people named in a U.S. superseding indictment over an alleged cyber-intrusion campaign linked to Iran-based Mabna Institute. The charges are allegations, not findings of guilt; the available reports do not establish whether Barati has appeared in court or entered a plea.

What happened to Amir Barati?

Barati was arrested in June in Kotor, Montenegro, at the request of U.S. authorities, according to the Associated Press. Montenegro transferred him to the United States on October 1. The AP reported that the arrest and extradition followed operational and intelligence information exchange between Montenegrin and U.S. law enforcement.

Before the transfer, Montenegro’s High Court in Podgorica approved extradition through a simplified procedure and notified the Justice Ministry, local outlet Vijesti reported on September 22.

What does the U.S. indictment allege?

In August 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a 14-count superseding indictment naming 17 alleged members of Mabna Institute, an Iran-based company, including Barati. Prosecutors allege the campaign began in 2013 and involved cyber intrusions to steal academic data, intellectual property, email inboxes and other proprietary information. The indictment represents the government’s allegations; it does not establish that the defendants committed the charged conduct.

The DOJ says the alleged campaign targeted:

  • 144 U.S.-based universities and 178 universities in other countries;
  • at least 42 U.S.-based private companies and at least 11 foreign private companies;
  • at least five U.S. federal and state government agencies; and
  • two nongovernmental organizations.

These are target counts reported by the DOJ, not a measure of proven theft or damage. The department’s announcement is available at justice.gov.

What is known about Barati’s alleged role?

The DOJ announcement names Barati as one of the 17 defendants but does not, in the available account, describe his individual conduct in enough detail to assign him a specific operational role. The indictment’s allegations against the group should not be treated as proof of what Barati personally did.

Where does the $3.4 billion figure come from?

The Associated Press reported that Montenegrin police estimated the alleged campaign caused $3.4 billion in damage. That is a police-attributed estimate reported by AP, not an independently established loss figure or a court finding.

What is known about the U.S. case now?

The reporting establishes that Barati was extradited, but does not establish whether he has made an initial U.S. court appearance, entered a plea, been detained, or had the case resolved. No conclusion about those procedural steps or the case’s outcome should be inferred from the transfer itself.
