Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If an AMI firmware screen says Press F2 to enter and nothing happens, do not assume the firmware is broken. F2 is not a universal entry key, and a keyboard that works in Windows may not be available to firmware before the operating system loads. Identify the exact computer or motherboard first. On ASUS NUC systems, ASUS’s documented checks are to replace a Bluetooth keyboard with a wired one and, if a front-panel USB connection fails, move it to a rear USB port. If Windows still starts, Microsoft provides a keyboard-independent route through Advanced startup to UEFI Firmware Settings.
What the “press F2” message actually tells you
AMI (American Megatrends) supplies firmware used by many manufacturers, but the computer maker decides which key, timing window and startup behavior its product uses. A message mentioning F2 is therefore a clue for that particular machine, not proof that every AMI-based computer accepts F2 in the same way. The displayed prompt can also be easy to miss because the firmware may continue booting after a short delay.

Start with the make and complete model number printed on the case, motherboard, service tag or original documentation. Then open the manufacturer’s support page or manual and confirm the firmware-entry key and procedure. ASUS explicitly says its F2 troubleshooting process applies only to NUC systems and directs owners of other computers to their system manufacturer. Its support article, last updated February 23, 2024, states: “The process below only works for NUC systems.” ASUS Support
Firmware runs before Windows. Microsoft describes it as software that runs before Windows when the PC is turned on, and notes that it is commonly called UEFI (and sometimes BIOS). Consequently, Windows keyboard drivers, Bluetooth services and some USB initialization may not exist yet. Microsoft Support

Why a key press can be ignored before Windows
Bluetooth may not be initialized
A Bluetooth keyboard depends on firmware support or a driver that may load only after the operating system starts. In its NUC troubleshooting table, ASUS warns that “Bluetooth drivers may not be loaded before an Operating System loads.” If your keyboard works at the Windows sign-in screen but not at the F2 prompt, that timing difference is a plausible explanation on a NUC; it is not a universal diagnosis for every AMI system. ASUS Support
USB location can matter
Firmware may initialize some USB controllers or ports earlier than others. ASUS’s NUC guidance says to use a wired keyboard and, when a wired keyboard connected to a front-panel port does not respond, try a rear-panel port. A rear port generally connects directly to the motherboard’s I/O area, but the instruction is specifically documented for ASUS NUCs rather than guaranteed for all PCs.
The wrong key or timing can look identical
Some systems use Delete, Esc, a function key other than F2, or a manufacturer-specific combination. Others require repeated taps immediately after power-on rather than holding the key. Treat the on-screen wording and the model manual as the authority. Do not substitute an F2 procedure from a different model simply because both machines use AMI firmware.

Safest troubleshooting sequence
Follow these steps in order. They begin with identification and reversible checks, then use Windows if it is available.
- Record the exact model. Read the label on the computer or motherboard, check the system information shown in Windows, or use the purchase record. Search that model on the manufacturer’s official support site and verify the current BIOS/UEFI-entry instructions.
- Use the specified key during a cold start. Shut down completely, power on, and begin tapping the documented key as soon as the manufacturer logo or firmware prompt appears. If the model’s instructions specify a different key or method, follow them instead of F2.
- Replace Bluetooth with a basic wired USB keyboard. Borrow one before buying anything. This is the first keyboard check ASUS documents for NUC systems because Bluetooth support may not be present before the operating system.
- Move the wired keyboard to another port. On a NUC, ASUS specifically recommends a rear-panel USB port when a front-panel connection does not respond. On a different computer, consult its manual for which ports are available during pre-boot.
- Disconnect nonessential peripherals only when the manufacturer’s procedure calls for it. Remove external drives, hubs and other accessories temporarily to isolate interference, but understand that ASUS documents this step for a related symptom—systems that boot directly into BIOS or an Aptio/MyASUS screen—not as a universal cure for an ignored F2 press. ASUS’s related troubleshooting article
- If Windows starts, use Advanced startup. The exact path is given below and avoids relying on the pre-boot hotkey.
- Escalate with the model-specific evidence. If the key is still ignored, record whether the keyboard’s indicator lights respond, whether Windows boots, and which ports you tried. Give those details to the computer or motherboard manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Enter UEFI through Windows when the operating system still boots
Windows 11 includes a supported route that restarts directly into firmware settings. Microsoft documents this sequence in its Windows 11 and Secure Boot guidance:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- After the restart, choose Troubleshoot.
- Choose Advanced options, then UEFI Firmware Settings.
- Select Restart. The computer should reboot into its firmware setup screen.
The UEFI Firmware Settings option may be absent on systems configured for legacy BIOS mode or on installations whose firmware does not expose the handoff to Windows. If it is missing, return to the manufacturer’s manual rather than selecting an unrelated recovery option. The route changes how you enter setup; it does not repair a defective keyboard, firmware chip or motherboard.

Choose the route that matches your situation
| Situation | First route | Evidence and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Windows loads normally | Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings | Microsoft documents this path for restarting into firmware; it does not prove a hardware fault or fix missing firmware support. |
| Keyboard is Bluetooth | Try a basic wired USB keyboard | ASUS says Bluetooth drivers may not load before an operating system on NUC systems; other models may differ. |
| Wired keyboard is in a front-panel USB port on an ASUS NUC | Move it to a rear-panel USB port | This front-versus-rear check is part of ASUS’s NUC procedure, not a guarantee for every AMI implementation. |
| Prompt names F2 but the model is unknown | Identify the exact model and verify its manual | AMI is the firmware supplier; the system maker controls the key, timing and supported ports. |
| A specific laptop repeatedly ignores F2 | Use that manufacturer’s service bulletin or support case | Individual models can have controller or firmware conditions that cannot be generalized. |
A model-specific example: Dell Inspiron 14 3420
Dell documents a case titled “Inspiron 14 3420 Cannot Enter BIOS Setup Menu When Press F2 Key.” In that model, Dell attributes the behavior to a Qualcomm embedded controller entering a sleep mode and lists a Windows BIOS update as the resolution. The bulletin was modified May 18, 2026, and applies to the Inspiron 14 3420. Dell Support

This example matters because it prevents a common mistake: copying a model-specific remedy to unrelated AMI systems. A Dell embedded-controller update is not a general AMI-BIOS fix, and it should not be attempted on another computer unless that computer’s manufacturer gives the same instruction for the same model and symptom.
Do not jump straight to risky firmware actions
A BIOS flash, CMOS reset, internal disassembly or replacement of the motherboard can create new problems when the original issue is simply an unsupported keyboard connection or wrong entry key. None is a universal first-line response to an ignored F2 press.

- Simple Wired USB Connection,You will enjoy a comfortable and quiet typing experience
- The keyboard for business and office working is the budget-friendly keyboard that is built for longer use
- Low profile keys for a more comfortable and quiet keystroke, desktop-centric design, splash resistant
Consider a firmware update only when the exact manufacturer page identifies it as a remedy for your model and symptom. Read the power, battery and recovery requirements first, and do not interrupt an update. A CMOS reset can erase custom boot, storage or security settings; if the manufacturer instructs you to perform one, document those settings beforehand and follow its exact procedure. Internal work can also affect warranty coverage or damage components, so use qualified service when the official guidance requires opening the device.

“F2 does nothing” and “the computer always opens BIOS” are different starting conditions. ASUS has a separate article, updated April 7, 2026, for systems that boot directly into BIOS, Aptio Setup Utility or a MyASUS in UEFI screen. That guidance includes removing peripherals and checking device-specific BIOS settings. ASUS Support
If your machine displays the setup screen without you pressing a key, use that symptom-specific procedure. Do not combine it with the NUC F2 steps or assume that a setting change intended for one ASUS product exists on another manufacturer’s firmware.

When the keyboard itself may be the problem
Observe the keyboard before changing firmware settings. If Caps Lock or another indicator never responds during the prompt, try a second known-good wired keyboard. Avoid hubs, docking stations and wireless receivers while testing; connect directly to the port recommended for the model. If a wired keyboard works in one port but not another, report the port difference to support rather than repeatedly pressing F2.
A basic wired USB keyboard is an optional troubleshooting tool for readers currently using Bluetooth or an unreliable pre-boot connection. ASUS supports that approach for NUC systems, but does not endorse a particular brand or guarantee that every wired keyboard works with every firmware. Try one you already own before purchasing anything.
What to tell support if F2 remains ignored
Provide the manufacturer, full model number, firmware prompt wording, operating-system version, keyboard type, USB port used, and whether Windows starts. Note whether the machine freezes at the prompt, skips straight to Windows, or opens setup without input. Include the exact date and version of any official bulletin you followed. This information lets support distinguish a pre-boot input problem from a model-specific controller, firmware or motherboard issue.

The official material available for this symptom is procedural guidance plus individual manufacturer cases, not a universal failure rate or a controlled test.
