Two players with reported personal ties to Australia, Grace Fujinaga and Marcus Wertheim, are part of the story—but a top-five finish will advance Australia to the next qualifying event, not directly earn a place at LA28.
When and where the Asia-Pacific championships begin
The 2026 Asia-Pacific Sixes Lacrosse Championships are scheduled for October 5–10 at Sunshine Coast Stadium, within the Kawana Sports Precinct on Australia’s Sunshine Coast. As of October 3, the tournament is still upcoming. World Lacrosse’s event information lists Australia in both the men’s and women’s competitions, alongside eleven men’s teams and ten women’s teams overall.

Why Fujinaga and Wertheim have Australian connections
An October 3, 2026 report by eTicketing.co says Grace Fujinaga was born in Sydney to US parents and moved to the United States as a child. It describes Marcus Wertheim as having grown up in St. James, New York, with a mother born in Melbourne. The same report says both moved to Australia after playing professionally in the United States. These biographical details come from that secondary report; the official tournament material establishes the competition and pathway, not the players’ biographies.

The report also attributes their motivations to those connections: Fujinaga spoke of returning to play club lacrosse in Australia and falling for the place and its people, while Wertheim said he wanted to represent Australia in honor of his mother. Those comments are reported remarks, not independently verified interview transcripts.
What a top-five finish earns Australia
The Sunshine Coast championship is a continental qualifier for the 2027 World Lacrosse Sixes Championships. Under World Lacrosse’s published rules, the top five teams in each gender’s competition advance. That would put Australia into the 2027 event if its men’s or women’s team finishes in the qualifying positions; it would not itself qualify either team for the Olympics.

The 2027 championship is the primary Olympic qualifier and is set to feature 16 teams per gender. It awards five Olympic places per gender. The next six eligible teams then have a final qualifying opportunity in a tournament planned for early 2028, where one remaining place per gender is decided. The United States, as host of LA28, qualifies automatically subject to participation requirements.

How sixes differs—and why the players say it suits the Olympics
The October 3 report presents both players as fans of sixes, describing the format as fast-moving and easier for spectators to follow than traditional field lacrosse. It attributes to Fujinaga the view that the game was “truly built for the Olympic setup,” and that its rules are simpler for spectators to understand. Wertheim is quoted as saying sixes requires players to contribute on both sides of the field. These are opinions and quotations as reported by eTicketing.co, rather than independently confirmed verbatim interviews.
