Quick comparison of the cards
The table separates durable earning features from benefits that depend on enrollment, eligible merchants or a particular booking channel. Welcome offers are intentionally excluded because American Express can change them by application, date and applicant.

Start with your spending pattern
If restaurants and groceries dominate
Gold is built around food purchases. Its restaurant bonus applies worldwide, while its supermarket bonus is limited to U.S. supermarkets and has a stated purchase ceiling. That combination favors someone who spends across both categories and wants points for travel rather than a statement credit.

Gold’s value is not just the headline multiplier. The card also lists four recurring credits: a Dining Credit, Uber Cash, Resy Credit and Dunkin’ Credit. Each one can require enrollment, a qualifying purchase, a particular merchant or use of a specified service. Treat the credits as potential value only after checking that the merchants are available where you live and that your normal routine will trigger them without extra spending.
If you want simple cash back
Blue Cash Preferred is the cleaner choice when you would rather receive cash back than manage a points balance. The supermarket bonus applies to U.S. supermarkets and is capped at $6,000 in annual purchases; spending above that limit does not receive the same stated rate. Select streaming services receive the higher cash-back rate, and transit purchases receive 3%.
The first year has an introductory fee treatment, followed by a $95 annual fee. Compare that ongoing fee with your actual supermarket, streaming and transit spending, not with a theoretical maximum. A household that buys little from qualifying supermarkets may earn less than expected even if the headline percentage looks attractive.
If your spending is mixed
Do not assume a larger points multiplier automatically beats cash back. The choice turns on what you will do with the rewards. Points can be useful for travel redemptions, while cash back is immediately understandable and does not depend on finding an advantageous redemption. American Express frames the decision plainly: it depends on whether you would rather earn points for travel or get cash back on everyday purchases.

Gold versus Platinum: everyday rewards or premium travel?
American Express positions Gold for foodies and everyday spenders and Platinum for frequent travelers who want premium perks. That distinction is more useful than comparing the cards by a single bonus category.
When Gold is the better fit
Gold makes sense when restaurants and U.S. supermarket purchases are a large, repeatable part of your budget. Its hotel bonus is limited to prepaid hotels through Amex Travel, so it is not a universal bonus on every hotel booking method. The food credits can reduce the effective cost only if you naturally use the participating services and satisfy their terms.
Gold also keeps your travel strategy more flexible. You are earning a general American Express points currency rather than committing every trip to one airline or hotel chain. That flexibility is useful if your destinations and carriers change from year to year.

Platinum concentrates value in travel infrastructure and premium benefits. Its listed travel earning applies to eligible prepaid flights and hotels booked through Amex Travel. The card also advertises access to more than 1,550 airport lounges and up to $600 in annual hotel statement credits.

Lounge access is meaningful only when you fly often enough, use airports with participating lounges and would otherwise pay for comfort or food during connections. The hotel credit similarly depends on eligible properties, booking rules and the way the credit is issued. If you rarely fly or usually choose the least expensive hotel available, the premium package may not offset the fee.
A practical break-even test
List the Platinum benefits you would use in a normal year, then assign each a conservative value based on what you would otherwise pay. Keep the hotel credit at its stated maximum only if your bookings meet all requirements; do not count unused portions. For lounge access, value the visits you would genuinely make rather than multiplying the advertised lounge count by an assumed dollar amount.
Run the same exercise for Gold’s four credits. Their listed face values total $424, but that is not guaranteed savings: credits can be monthly or otherwise periodic, may require enrollment, and may be restricted to eligible merchants or purchases. A credit you would not use has no practical value.

Is Blue Cash Preferred better than Gold for groceries?
For groceries alone, compare three questions rather than the percentage in isolation:

- Where do you shop? Blue Cash Preferred’s supermarket rate is for U.S. supermarkets. Gold’s supermarket rate also specifies U.S. supermarkets, so purchases at warehouse clubs, specialty stores or other merchants may not qualify under the same category definitions.
- How much do you spend? Blue Cash Preferred’s elevated supermarket rate applies only up to its stated annual cap. Gold has a different, higher purchase ceiling for its supermarket bonus. Estimate your typical annual spend and identify what happens after each cap.
- What reward do you want? Blue Cash Preferred returns cash back. Gold returns points that may suit travel redemptions but require you to choose how and when to redeem them.
Streaming and transit can tilt the decision toward Blue Cash Preferred if those expenses are substantial and qualify as select streaming services or transit under the card’s definitions. Conversely, frequent restaurant spending and use of Gold’s credits can make Gold more compelling even when grocery totals are similar.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between Delta Gold and Delta Platinum
The Delta comparison is primarily a loyalty decision. American Express describes Delta Gold as the lower-fee option in the pair, with free checked bags and priority boarding. Those benefits can matter when you regularly check luggage or want earlier boarding, but they are less valuable if you usually travel with a personal item or already receive equivalent treatment through another status or fare.
Delta Platinum adds a companion certificate and a head start toward Medallion status. The certificate has value only when your travel plans, eligible routes and booking rules let you use it; a benefit that expires unused should not be counted in your calculation. The Medallion head start is similarly useful only if you fly Delta enough for status progress to affect your trips.

Choose Delta Gold when the basic airport benefits solve your main problem. Choose Delta Platinum when the companion certificate and status acceleration are benefits you can repeatedly use. If Delta is only an occasional option, a general travel card may avoid concentrating your rewards in one airline program.

The no-annual-fee Hilton choice
The Hilton Honors Card is the straightforward option for travelers who already stay at Hilton properties. It earns 7X Hilton points on eligible Hilton purchases and 5X at U.S. restaurants, gas stations and supermarkets. Complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status adds hotel-program recognition without an annual fee.
This card is strongest when Hilton is your default hotel chain. If you split stays among several brands, the Hilton-specific points and status may be less useful than a general rewards card. Also check the definition of an eligible Hilton purchase and the current terms for how points and status are awarded.
How to evaluate credits, caps and conditions
Before assigning a dollar value to any card, make a one-year worksheet with these columns:
- Qualifying spend: restaurant, supermarket, streaming, transit, airline, hotel and other categories you actually use.
- Cap: the purchase limit for each elevated earning rate, such as Blue Cash Preferred’s $6,000 supermarket limit or the higher Gold category ceilings.
- Reward currency: cash back, general points, Delta-focused rewards or Hilton points.
- Activation: whether enrollment or a separate account connection is required.
- Booking channel: whether the benefit requires Amex Travel, an eligible hotel or another specified channel.
- Expiration and cadence: whether a credit is monthly, annual, use-it-or-lose-it or subject to a limited redemption window.
Subtract the annual fee from benefits you can document, not from advertised maximums. Keep welcome offers in a separate line because the offer available to you can change and may have a spending requirement that does not match your normal budget.
Points, cash back and loyalty concentration
General points provide flexibility when you do not know which airline or hotel you will use next. Cash back provides certainty and requires no travel planning. Delta and Hilton cards can be efficient for loyalists, but their value falls when you move between carriers or hotel groups.
Concentration also creates a practical risk: a program-specific card can be excellent for your regular trips and disappointing during years when your schedule changes. Recheck your airline and hotel patterns before renewing a card, especially if a companion certificate, status benefit or annual credit drove the original decision.
Quick Recap
Decision checklist
- Write down your past 12 months of restaurant, U.S. supermarket, streaming, transit, airline and hotel spending.
- Mark which purchases fit each card’s stated category and which exceed a bonus cap.
- Choose cash back or points before comparing headline percentages.
- For every credit, confirm enrollment, merchant, booking-channel and timing requirements.
- Value lounge visits, companion certificates and status benefits conservatively.
- Subtract the recurring annual fee after estimating realistic, not maximum, benefit use.
- Keep any welcome offer separate from the long-term decision and verify its current terms at application.
Bottom line by traveler type
- Restaurant-and-grocery spender: Gold is the focused points option, provided you can use its credits.
- Frequent flyer seeking lounges: Platinum is the premium-travel option when lounge and hotel benefits justify the fee.
- Cash-back household: Blue Cash Preferred fits qualifying grocery, streaming and transit spending within its cap.
- Delta loyalist: Delta Gold covers core checked-bag and boarding benefits; Delta Platinum is for travelers who can use the companion certificate and status head start.
- Hilton loyalist avoiding an annual fee: Hilton Honors combines Hilton earning with Silver status at no annual fee.
