American Airlines says eligible AAdvantage members will soon be able to pay for some domestic U.S. flights with a combination of cash and miles. The checkout feature is rolling out “in the coming weeks,” but American has not announced a specific launch date.
Who can use cash and miles, and where?
American’s program-update page describes the initial offer as available to U.S. AAdvantage members booking domestic U.S. flights operated by American, excluding Alaska and Hawaii. The rollout timing remains broad: American says “in the coming weeks,” with no firm start date. Availability may therefore depend on when the feature appears in the booking flow.
How the booking process works
This is a payment choice within a cash flight booking, not a separate award-ticket search. American says customers select flights using cash first, then see the cash-and-miles options during checkout.

- Select the desired flights with cash.
- Review the optional trip-insurance offer.
- View the cash-and-miles options shown for that itinerary.
- Use the slider to choose a cash-and-miles combination.
- Check the automatically updated cost summary, enter payment information and complete the booking.
The available slider choices depend on what American presents for the selected trip; the airline has not published a standard set of combinations.
How to judge whether a mixed payment is worthwhile
American has not disclosed a fixed miles value or provided an example itinerary showing the cash saved for miles spent. Do not assume that one slider position offers a universal cents-per-mile value. For the specific flight you are booking, compare the cash-only total with each mixed-payment total presented at checkout.

- Record the cash-only price and each mixed option’s cash amount.
- Compare how many miles each option uses with how much cash it saves.
- Review the applicable fare conditions before booking.
- Check whether the transaction earns AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points.
The last point matters because the AAdvantage terms effective March 1, 2026 say cash-and-miles transactions may not earn miles or Loyalty Points unless American specifies otherwise. The announcement of this new booking option does not say whether it is an exception. Consult the AAdvantage terms and conditions and verify the treatment shown for your booking.
