America passes 80,000 public fast-charging ports in Q3 2026

The U.S. public DC fast-charging network surpassed 80,000 ports for the first time in the third quarter of 2026. Paren counted more than 80,000 ports at 14,614 stations after operators added 4,106 ports across 664 stations during the quarter. The milestone shows a larger network, but the more important shift is qualitative: new sites are generally bigger and more powerful, even as construction slowed compared with 2025.

What the 80,000-port milestone measures

The figure comes from Paren’s Q3 2026 count of U.S. public DC fast-charging ports. It is not a count of every public electric-vehicle outlet: public Level 2 stations are a separate category, and the Joint Office’s growth chart can include both available and temporarily unavailable Level 2 and DC fast-charging ports from the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fueling Station Locator.

Paren also updated its methodology to capture operating stations more accurately. That makes the date and measurement important: “more than 80,000” refers specifically to Paren’s public DC fast-charging methodology for the third quarter of 2026, not to the total number of all public charging ports.

  • Stations: 14,614 public DC fast-charging stations
  • Ports: More than 80,000
  • Q3 additions: 664 stations and 4,106 ports

Expansion slowed, but each new site is more substantial

Through the first three quarters of 2026, operators opened 2,158 stations. That is about 20% fewer than the 2,696 stations opened through Q3 2025. Port additions also declined: 12,354 ports were added through Q3 2026, compared with 13,600 over the same period in 2025, a drop of about 9%.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station | Plug in, up to 40 mph, 25ft Cable, WiFi (2.4GHz), Smart App, Weatherproof Indoor/Outdoor (IP66, NEMA 4), UL & ETL Certified
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Measure through Q3 2025 2026 Change
Stations opened 2,696 2,158 About 20% fewer in 2026
Ports added 13,600 12,354 About 9% fewer in 2026

The raw pace is slower, but the new locations are larger than the network’s historical average. New non-Tesla sites averaged 5.0 ports. A site with more simultaneous stalls can serve more vehicles without requiring a driver to wait for one specific plug, particularly on busy travel corridors.

Fast-charging power is moving higher

Paren found that 73% of all new ports in Q3 2026 were rated for at least 250 kilowatts. Among new non-Tesla ports, 35% were rated at 400 kW or more. Those ratings describe what the charging equipment can deliver under suitable conditions; an individual vehicle may charge more slowly because of its battery, software, temperature, state of charge or charging curve.

For drivers, a higher site rating is therefore an opportunity rather than a guarantee of a particular session time. The car must be able to accept the power, and the station must be operating normally.

Which operators added the most ports?

Tesla remained the largest individual contributor to Q3 growth, although its share of the installed base declined as other networks expanded.

Operator Q3 2026 ports added Share or qualification
Tesla 1,287 31.3% of Q3 additions
Tesla, including Supercharger for Business 1,411 Expanded Tesla total reported by Paren
IONNA 378 Q3 additions
Walmart 344 Q3 additions

Tesla’s installed-base share slipped to 49.3%. That does not mean Tesla added fewer ports than every other operator; it means the rest of the market collectively grew faster relative to the existing base. The result is a more varied network, with drivers increasingly choosing among operators rather than relying on a single nationwide system.

Reliability is high nationally, but utilization signals pressure in busy places

Paren recorded 50.4 million charging sessions in Q3 2026. National utilization was 15.9%, while the national reliability score was 93.9. Fifty of 52 states and territories scored at least 90 for reliability.

Utilization is useful for identifying demand pressure by state or metropolitan area, but it is not a direct measurement of how long a driver will wait. A location can have high utilization without a queue at the moment you arrive, while a smaller site can develop a line after a local event or during a travel peak. Reliability scores also describe network performance over the measured period; they do not guarantee that every individual stall will be available on every visit.

The practical standard is straightforward. As Tom Moloughney, host and creator of State Of Charge and owner of EVChargingStations.com, put it: “Public charging must work for people who have no interest in troubleshooting equipment or becoming experts in charging networks.”

Can every EV use every public fast charger?

No. The number of ports does not remove connector and vehicle-compatibility limits. Drivers need to match three things before starting a trip:

  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and plugs into a 240V outlet with a 14-50 receptacle, requiring a 40A or 50A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter
  1. The vehicle’s charging inlet: Confirm whether the car uses NACS, CCS or CHAdeMO, as applicable to that vehicle.
  2. The station’s connector: Check the connector shown in the network’s app, vehicle route planner or station listing.
  3. Adapter approval: If the plug and inlet differ, use an adapter approved for that vehicle and charging network. A CCS1-to-NACS adapter may be relevant for some combinations, but compatibility is vehicle- and station-specific.

The Department of Energy says agencies and private companies are collaborating on adapter and connector standards as part of a more interoperable network. That work should reduce friction over time, but it does not make every existing port interchangeable today.

What the milestone means for EV drivers

More than 80,000 public DC fast-charging ports gives drivers a substantially larger pool of possible stops, and the higher power ratings at new sites can support faster sessions for vehicles designed to use them. Larger sites may also reduce the chance that one occupied or failed stall disrupts a trip.

The limitations are equally concrete: construction is proceeding more slowly than in 2025, utilization varies by location, and connector compatibility still requires checking before departure. The 80,000 figure is therefore best understood as a scale milestone, not a promise that every road, vehicle or station offers the same charging experience.
