America.gov Review: Useful Government Answers, but Know the Limits

America.gov is an official General Services Administration (GSA) service that uses AI to help people find and understand government information. It can be a useful starting point because its answers link to government sources, but it is not an agency portal: it does not file applications, check their status, or decide eligibility. Its own terms warn that answers can be incomplete, wrong, or out of date, so treat them as a guide to the responsible agency’s instructions—not as the final word.

What America.gov does—and what it does not

America.gov lets people ask questions in ordinary language and says it draws information from across 29,000 government websites. That figure is the service’s own homepage claim; the homepage does not state a year for the count, and it is not an independently audited inventory. Answers link to original government sources and may provide step-by-step guidance or explain a PDF. The service supports English, Spanish, and French, accepts voice input, and recommends including relevant details such as your state and dates.

GSA’s Terms of Use describe America.gov as a way to explain government tasks and point users to the agency responsible for a program. Asking a question does not submit an application, file a document, or contact an agency. America.gov is not the agency of record and cannot approve benefits, decide eligibility, or change a filing.

Can you trust America.gov’s AI answers?

Use the answers for discovery and explanation, then check the linked source—especially before acting on benefits, money, immigration status, or a deadline. Source links make it possible to verify the underlying information, but they do not establish that an AI summary is complete, current, or correctly applied to your circumstances.

The service’s terms, last updated September 8, 2026, put the limitation plainly: “They can be incomplete or wrong, and they can be out of date the moment a program changes.” They also say, “Only the responsible agency can do that, and the agency’s own determination always controls.” No independent answer-accuracy evaluation or technical audit is established by the official pages described here, so there is no basis for treating America.gov as a guaranteed-correct source.

Does America.gov save your questions?

The short privacy summary says no account is required and messages are not saved as chat history, while noting that some answers may be cached for up to two hours. The fuller privacy policy, last updated September 29, 2026, explains that distinction: conversations and pending questions are held in browser memory, and chat history is not saved as account history. Questions are still processed to generate responses, and the policy says the AI searches government websites in a secure, sandboxed version of the Internet.

The detailed policy also describes operational data and retention beyond chat history:

  • Request handling receives technical information such as the requested URL, network address, date and time, and browser headers. IP addresses are used for service availability and abuse prevention; Cloudflare security logs that may include an IP address are retained for 12 months.
  • Operational measurements, including pseudonymous identifiers, model and tool outcomes, timing, and token counts, are retained for up to 90 days.
  • Generated responses and search results may be cached for up to two hours. Generated follow-up suggestions may be cached for up to 30 days.
  • If you submit feedback, the rating, comments, AI answer, sources, and metadata may be retained for up to one year.

According to the policy, AI providers operate under Zero Data Retention agreements and retain none of the prompts or generated responses. It says providers are contractually prohibited from selling user information, building advertising profiles, or training models with user data. Those are the government’s stated contractual protections; the policy alone does not independently verify provider systems or contract compliance.

Location, voice input, and PDFs

The policy says America.gov may share a general area—such as a city or region estimated from a network address—with AI providers. It says the service does not use GPS or request precise location.

Voice recognition depends on the browser. The policy names Google in Chrome, Apple in Safari, and Microsoft Azure in desktop Edge as examples, and says audio may go directly from the browser to the transcription provider under that provider’s privacy practices. Typing instead avoids voice transcription.

For PDFs, text is extracted in the browser. The policy describes a best-effort attempt to remove some personal details using Rampart, with examples including Social Security numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, and credit card numbers. This is not a guarantee of removal; avoid uploading PDFs containing personally identifiable information.

Can America.gov check an application or complete a task?

No. The FAQ says America.gov cannot see submitted applications or check their status; it can direct you to the responsible agency’s status-checking tool. For an application, eligibility decision, filing, or deadline, use the agency’s own service and follow its instructions.

The homepage labels features such as completing forms, tracking progress, and organizing services “More coming in 2027.” Its examples include jobs, campgrounds, medication cost comparison, housing, name changes, and passport application progress. These are previews of planned capabilities, not evidence that those functions are currently available.

Is America.gov an official government website?

Yes. It is operated by the General Services Administration, according to its terms. That establishes the service’s government operator, not the correctness of every generated answer or the service’s authority to act for another agency. The FAQ says there is no separate app; America.gov runs in a browser on phones, tablets, and computers.

When America.gov is useful

  • Use it to find the agency responsible for a topic, get an initial explanation, or locate relevant official pages.
  • Include useful context, such as your state and relevant dates, as the how-it-works page recommends.
  • Open the linked government source and confirm its instructions apply to your situation before taking consequential action.
  • Go directly to the responsible agency for status checks, applications, filings, eligibility decisions, and authoritative deadlines.

America.gov’s strongest case is as a convenient guide to government information, not as a substitute for agencies or their decisions. Its source links and disclosed limitations help set expectations, but anyone using it should verify important answers at the source.
