AMD Zen 6 on TSMC 2nm: What We Know About Medusa and Venice

AMD has confirmed that its 6th Gen EPYC “Venice” server processor is ramping production on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process in 2026. Separately, AMD’s client roadmap names a future Medusa family expected in 2027. That does not yet confirm a consumer processor called “Medusa Ridge,” or establish its specs, socket, or launch date. The clearest way to understand the outlook is to separate AMD’s confirmed server plans from its still-incomplete client roadmap.

What is AMD Zen 6?

Zen 6 is AMD’s next processor architecture generation. AMD has identified Venice as its 6th Gen EPYC implementation, but that server product is not a desktop Ryzen chip. On the client side, AMD’s 2025 Financial Analyst Day roadmap named Gorgon and Medusa as future processor families. AMD’s client blog said the Medusa family was expected in 2027; it did not publish a complete desktop product specification under the name “Medusa Ridge.”

AMD also said its next generation could deliver “up to 10x gains since 2024.” That is a broad roadmap statement, not a Medusa Ridge benchmark result or a guarantee of a tenfold improvement in any particular task. AMD has not specified the metric or product configuration needed to treat it as a direct performance comparison.

Is AMD Medusa Ridge 2nm?

The confirmed AMD product associated with TSMC 2nm is EPYC Venice. AMD said on May 21, 2026, that Venice was ramping production in Taiwan on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process, with future production planned at TSMC’s Arizona facility. The statement confirms a production plan for Venice; it does not confirm that a Medusa client processor will use the same process.

AMD’s chair and CEO, Lisa Su, described the Venice ramp as “an important step forward in accelerating the next generation of AI infrastructure.” TSMC chairman and CEO C.C. Wei likewise framed the collaboration around high-performance and AI computing. Those comments concern the companies’ manufacturing and design collaboration, not a published Medusa Ridge specification.

When will Zen 6 launch?

AMD’s published client messaging places the Medusa family in 2027, but does not give a specific release date, sales window, or desktop launch schedule for a product called Medusa Ridge. Treat 2027 as AMD’s stated expectation for the family, not a confirmed retail date for a particular Ryzen model.

Venice has a separate timeline: AMD’s 2025 presentation said it was “Coming in 2026,” and the company reported production ramping on May 21, 2026. A production ramp is not the same thing as a consumer launch, and Venice is a server processor.

Will Medusa Ridge use AM5?

AMD has not confirmed a socket for Medusa Ridge. In particular, the available official roadmap information does not establish AM5 compatibility, motherboard support, or platform longevity for Medusa. Do not assume an existing AM5 motherboard will support a future Zen 6 desktop processor until AMD publishes compatibility information for specific products and boards.

  • For the advanced Socket AM4 platform

How many cores will Zen 6 have?

AMD has not announced a core count for a Medusa Ridge desktop processor. Venice’s published figures are server specifications and should not be carried over to a Ryzen product. AMD’s 2025 EPYC Venice presentation listed up to 256 cores and 1.6 TB/s of memory bandwidth, with availability coming in 2026. Those figures describe Venice, not Medusa Ridge.

AMD’s architecture overview describes a chiplet approach in which a chiplet houses Zen cores and additional chiplets can be added for higher-performance processors. That makes modular multi-die designs a reasonable possibility to watch for, but it does not establish Medusa Ridge’s die layout, core count, cache, or memory configuration.

What is the difference between Medusa Ridge and EPYC Venice?

They belong to different parts of AMD’s roadmap. Venice is the named EPYC server implementation with a confirmed 2nm production ramp. Medusa is a future client family identified on AMD’s roadmap, with 2027 messaging, but a desktop processor specifically called Medusa Ridge has not been fully announced.

Roadmap detail EPYC Venice Medusa / “Medusa Ridge”
Product category 6th Gen EPYC server processor (AMD, May 21, 2026) Future client family named in AMD’s 2025 roadmap; a specific Medusa Ridge desktop SKU is not established
Process information AMD said production was ramping on TSMC advanced 2nm in Taiwan, with future production planned in Arizona (May 21, 2026) Not stated by AMD for a Medusa desktop processor
Timing AMD’s 2025 presentation said “Coming in 2026”; production ramp reported May 21, 2026 AMD’s client blog said the Medusa family was expected in 2027 (2025); no specific product launch date stated
Published core and memory figures Up to 256 cores and 1.6 TB/s memory bandwidth (AMD presentation, 2025) Core count and memory bandwidth not stated
Desktop socket, cache, clocks, price, benchmarks Not applicable as a consumer desktop specification Not stated for Medusa Ridge

AMD’s chiplet white paper traces milestones including 2.5D HBM in 2015, chiplets in 2019, and 3D V-Cache in 2021. This history provides context for AMD’s use of advanced packaging, but does not prove which packaging or cache design a future Medusa desktop product will use.

What should buyers wait to verify?

For a meaningful buying or upgrade decision, wait for AMD to identify a specific retail processor and publish its platform details. The useful comparison points are:

  • Whether AMD confirms a desktop product name and release date, rather than only a family roadmap.
  • Socket and motherboard compatibility, including any required firmware updates.
  • Core and thread counts, cache configuration, clocks, power limits, and cooling requirements.
  • Memory support, integrated graphics, and any NPU capability.
  • Retail pricing and independently reproducible benchmarks against clearly identified competing processors.

Until then, leaked specifications and forum posts are unverified leads, not confirmed product facts. Venice’s server figures and AMD’s broad roadmap performance language cannot substitute for desktop specifications or tested results.
